View Full Version : DHP artists... significance of song titles...
I asked a few weeks ago about the significance of "Gitwa", one of Joe Claussell's tracks on the "Language" album.
I thought we should start a thread for the artists on DHP (and others of course) where they could perhaps tell us about how they choose their song titles, how personal each song is, etc. The example of Gitwa was great, that is a very "personal thing" that Joe shared with his fans by giving a track the name of someone he cherished.
I'd be interested in finding out where Slam Mode find their titles. Those that are familiar with their music can recall some of their titles, they sound latin or related to astronomy perhaps (?? could be way off on this one): Cygnos Puro, Ganyamede Ultra, Orbium Celestium, Umbra, Tabula Rasa, Guhya... are the first ones that come to mind.
Then some titles are very metaphoric, Theo Parrish is sort of a champion in that department (dammit, can't right a damn post without mentionning his name! icon_rofl.gif ): Dance of the Drunken Drum, Carpet People Don't Drink Steak Soda, Segments of the Fifth Wheel, Nepharious Cry, Night of the Sagittarius, Timeislafinacharunninout (?!@*&?%$!!!! took me a while to figure that one out, Red D... don't laugh).
Glenn Underground has nice titles too, some have some relation to his roots or religion, not sure though (Jerusalem EP?). "Disco Worm" really translates the feeling of the track; if you can remember how the track sounds, it feels like a worm swimming through the dancefloor :D
aiiight, your turn folks.

Hmmm....
"Soulis" is a pretty obvious title when listening to the lyrics.
"Black Magic Woman" was inspired by Sam "The Man" Burns' beautiful significant other, Rita, who's an amazing person to watch dance. We were working on the song, its all percussion, cowbells, timbales etc and I said I could just picture Rita going NUTS in the club to the song and so the name was born.
"Organic" is both descriptive of the main element in the song (an organ) and in the fact that it was originally borne out of my intense frustration at the concrete world after a horrible stab at going shopping for christmas gifts.
"In My Sights" was a song we were working on during the sniper attacks around the DC Metro area. The song took this dark, almost ominous turn with some timbale and cowbell patterns that seemed to ebb and flow with this sort of aggression which was similiar to the grips of panic that would hit the area every time someone got shot and then ease right before the next one got hit.
"Circulos Dos Chifres" means Circle of Horns and originally just referenced the main driving force of the song, the horns but then we wrote the lyrics, which talk about the power of music in its original, non-computerized, drum circle fashion and it ended up being even more appropriate.
Good topic, and it could even be pushed towards the naming of mix CD's for non-producers since it relates to the same creative thinking and can reveal something about a personal take on a mix that someone else might not have thought of when listening to the mix.
Now the question, do you think "getting" the meaning behind such things can make a mix or a song "better" or is it just a nice aside that doesn't really affect the quality of the product ?
Peace

Nice thread graemlins/respekt.gif defo 1 to think about!
IMO the names are just a nice aside and don't make it better. It'll always be about the tunes and not the names.

IMO the names are just a nice aside and don't make it better. It'll always be about the tunes and not the names. See, for me, knowing the meaning of something can change how I listen to a song, or a mix CD.
Sometimes a title or description can set the mood and can put things into a different perspective....
At the same time, I can respect the idea that for someone, or possibly ANYONE else, thats just way to "personal" and therefore wouldn't ever mean the same thing to any 2 people, or that they even should care.
Also, this isn't to say a good title could take a horrible song and make it good, but maybe just ADD to its nuances enough to take it from "good" to "amazing".
I do think its possible to make music SO personal that it isolates possible fans and narrows the number of people who might like it down to basically just the person who made it.
Peace
Well, music is music, therefore the title will not necessarly change much to it (except for vocal tracks where the title and the chorus - for example - are the same, etc...).
I think, like DeesKo was saying, that it's a nice aside that doesn't really affect the quality of the product.

when i done my first mix 2 weeks ago i had been thinking a lot about what people had been saying on dhp posts about what makes a good mix cd.
I woke up one day and thought to myself im gonna make a mix and im going to concentrate on playing great tracks no matter if they are new or old.
i didnt care if other dj's listened or what they thought about my mixing.i just played some of my favourite records i was feeling that day and made sure every cut was a great track. No fillers,no pre planned mixes,no editing ect.
The mix is called "its all about selection" and i believe that is the main ingredient when making a mix.
:D
