ANCHORAGE, Alaska Oct. 7 — A self-taught bear expert who once called Alaska's brown bears harmless was one of two people fatally mauled in a bear attack in the Katmai National Park and Preserve.
The bodies of Timothy Treadwell, 46, and Amie Huguenard, 37, both of Malibu, Calif., were found Monday at their campsite when a pilot arrived who was supposed to take them to Kodiak, state troopers said Tuesday.

Treadwell, co-author of "Among Grizzlies: Living With Wild Bears in Alaska," spent more than a dozen summers living alone with and videotaping Katmai bears. Information on Huguenard was not immediately available.

y'all got jokes. well i happen to work with a woman who knew the man and i looked at her and said, "i guess that was their way of telling them to leave." haha. now that's irony. there's a time and place for everything. isn't there.
but the irony is way too much. you wanna help those bears. watch them from a distance.

that's horrific! What a "grizzly" death...

If ever in a similar situation, just poke the little bugger in the eye...

What a dope. Agreed. Anyone who thinks Alaskan brown bears are "harmless" is no expert.

While bear attacks are rare, all bears are unpredictable and not generally very smart. They will attack people for a variety of reasons, including being startled, threatened, or very hungry (only polar bears are known to actively hunt humans). Sometimes they will attack for no good reason at all... seemingly out of curiosity or boredom.

The Alaskan brown bear in particular has a reputation for unpredictability and sudden violence. The attributes "farking huge", "extraordinarily powerful", "supprisingly fast", and "resistant to small arms fire" also spring to mind.

When I was growing up in Alaska, there was a book called Alaska Bear Tales for sale on the front counter of every bookstore. Here is a sample story (http://www.kaniut.com/abtsam.htm) from the authors website. It is the account of a geological surveyor who had her arms eaten by a hungry black bear, which is a cuddly toy in comparison to the "harmless" griz that killed Mr. Expert and his girlfriend.

it bears repeating (groan).... its better to have a gun (in this case rifle) and not need it than to need a gun and not have it....foolish

i find it interesting that the Tiger who ripped into Roy Horn's throat (Siegfried and Roy)wasn't trying to kill him, but trying to save him by dragging him off stage to safety. Guess you wouldn't know that at the time it was happening.

i've been bitten by my now deceased dog in the head, but that was probably because I was bugging him. We all have our limits.
