BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A car bomb exploded Friday outside the entrance of the Imam Ali Mosque in Najaf, one of Shiite Islam's holiest shrines, at the end of Friday noon prayers, according to coalition officials and a Shiite spokesman.

Saed Haitham, a spokesman for the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution, said there were deaths and injuries, but he could not say how many.

Arabic-language news channels reported nearly 20 deaths from the bomb, but that figure could not be immediately confirmed.

Najaf is about 100 miles (160 kilometers) south of Baghdad in south-central Iraq.

The mosque is a sacred site to Shiite Muslims around the world. Ali was the son-in-law of the prophet Muhammad and the first leader of the Shiite community.

Friday is the most holy day in the Muslim religion.

The blast was the second such explosion in Najaf in a week. On Sunday, three people were killed in a bombing outside the home of Shiite leader Ayatollah Mohamad Sa'eed al-Hakim, which is about a half-mile from the mosque.

Hakim suffered minor injuries from flying glass.
