View Full Version : How was Andre's Party @ SLICKS?

Just wondering how it went, since the door staff wouldn't let me in.
It seems I wasn't one of the "Beautiful People" as he called them, and therefore should wait outside. Which I didn't mind, but to wait for an hour, while numerous people sauntered by from their valet parking, right into the club, I thought was a bit excessive.
When questioned by other people in line with me, how "they" got to go in and we didn't, the doorman's response was:
"You don't have to be here. You can always go to SINIBAR, they let anybody in. We're looking for the beautiful people with style and class. Either wait, or go somewhere else."
Needless to say, my DJ-ego kicked in and I left and went to "Service" at 500 W. Cermak w/Mike Munni & crew. Had a ball there listening to Craig Alexander beat some old & new cuts.
Don't think I'll be going to SLICKS any time soon, if again...

That's why I don't patronize that place.I had a bad experience also. Before I could even walk all the way up there, dude goes up and down me with a flashlight and says"Sorry bruh, you ain't dressed right.."
That place can kiss my ass.I only liked going on Sundays, when I could make it.I wish they still had the early party.
The same thing that happened to you G,happened to some of my wife's friends. They had to wait for over an hour while some lesser dressed folks of another persuasion were able to just go in with no prob. That place has issues.
I will be at Sonotheque this weekend.I know I will have a better time there.
This is no dis to the SITH crew, but I can not contiue to support establishments that treat the customers like shit.It doesn;t matter if it's a club, store or any other kind of business.I want to feel appreciated for spending my hard earned money.

dee, have you ever tried to go to that spot on any other nite except for SITH?I am asking this because it's a whole different world on Fridays and Sats.
I understand some places having the dress codes due to the thug element, but that is pretty discriminating to say the least. If I wanna dance,I ain't putting on no damn suit.

No J, I've only gone on Sunday's SITH nights, but last year Roy Ayers performed there on a Sunday night & if you were not on the guest list you were not getting in... ask Mynia.

This was not a special event. The door policy there is shady and selective on the hot nites. It's a totally different world at the disco sets.
Like I said before, they can have that spot,I don't dig the vibe there anyways and that's not a place on my to go list on a sat. nite.
Guess I am older and wiser... ;) I'll be checking out some good shit with Anthony Nicholson. The guy is a-ok in my book and made me grooove the last time I heard him play.No dis to Dre,but that spot ain't right for him.

A guess list is no reason to treat a new customer like SH**.
The main reason that I don't do the northside is that very reason.
I rather spend my money at the local hole in the wall than go to the {you gotta be considered a somebody by somebody} place.
To Echo J 326, this is no dic to Soul In The Hole. I have a long standing reputation for NOT attending events on the northside (Krush & GS Productions events are the exception)

They have a dress code no jeans. I had to go home Saturday night around 2:30 to change my pants just so I could go up there. I know folks up there but I didn't want the hassle. If you have jeans own you not getting in unless Howie says so and he is usually not at the door.

Mack,I have had folks tell me they did not get in and they did not have on jeans. My wife's friends were ther for a b-day set and they did not have on jeans. That selective shit is bullshit.
Have you been to Sonotheque?I'll be there to just chill and get some good musical food.I'm a grown assed man and do not need to be in spots where they are selective, due to keeping out a certain element.

This is Pat, not my boo Charron.
But slick's have a real f-up policy due to the fact that they want that Glam look" inside there club when it realy isnt all of that!
The staff is cool ( personaly) but the managment is the one who call's the shot's.
They try to be correct with that look there looking for, but that's still borderline of being predjudice allso.
It's one of them club's that realy make's you wonder!
Peace.

mad1.gif Maybe there was a guest list? </font>
Naw Dee, there was no guest list, just attitude at the door. There were plenty of people in jeans (& tennis shoes) coming outside and re-entering with no problem. It's just the way they operate.
I'm not upset about it, because I already knew that's how they were, I just wanted to go and show support and wish a good friend a happy-b-day.

Pat </font>
Pat,you know the biz ness dude. That shit is suspect. But then again,we could also be accussed of profiling. You know if you were having a set and some woogies came thru, you would look them up and down. Then again,I guess it works both ways.I am just tired of having to show house credentials to get in a spot.Chicago house parties were not built on being selective.I know Rob used to be that way in the eary days, but he didn't want his clientele being jumped on after his sets.
Anyways,i'll be going to hear some music ove rthe weekend at Anthony's sopot.C'mon down and have a drink with me and let's rap a taste...

Phuck Slick's and any other club with a "selective" door policy. While it may only be enforced on Friday or Saturday nights, there's no excuse for it, and if I was promoting a night in a spot that pulled that crap on ANY night, I'd find a new spot. I played there in Feb for our own Torin Edmond's birthday party and had the WORST time... I was totally turned off by the crowd that was there and would have enjoyed playing at home then to waste my time there. That crowd was your typical black crowd that has to hear some JZ, 50 Cent or some classic sing-a-long house songs (which they were still cluless to)! Howie is my boy n all but I really don't feel that place.

I talked to Craig Loftis (who played) and he said it was OK but the place was full of the hip hop heads from the earlier party (similar to Cordell's assessment). He was wondering where everybody was.
I'm willing to bet there were quite a few of the house heads that were either turned away or made to wait and ultimately left.

On Friday & Saturday nights, the musical format is hip hop from opening until 1am, then they flip the music/djs to a house format. If you get there during the hip hop set, expect to be delayed if you are not a group of good-looking women. It appears the club wants to control the number of Black men inside. Whether it's a question of men-to-women ratio, or trying to keep a certain "look" inside (or outside), that is what they do. Of the 30 people waiting when I was there, 25 were Black men with their boys, 1 couple, and 3 Black women (kinda large) dressed with in spandex stretch skirts with the multi-style hairdo (wrap, freeeze curl, finger wave, and extension).
JUST AN OBJECTIVE OBSERVATION, make your own assessment...

On Sunday nights there's are hip hop heads & house heads so I don't understand what the difference is from Friday/Saturday nights. </font>
There should be no difference and I hope Rich get in their ass if they try to pull that on a Sunday night AR15firing.gif </font>
Yeah man I aint with all that cool people get in shit either. Is Slick like one of the last places left in Chicago to go for good music.
Do you think that maybe bad elements made it harder for the quality people to enter.
Is the Staff under so much heat to keep its doors open that it border line piss off potiential customers.
just trying to make sence of it all.

Peace I wasn't there, so I guess I'm not allowed to have an opinion about anything that I wasn't a part of, including but not limited to: The Iraqi war, any decision made by President Bush, any record that I do not own, or have not had a hand in producing, any sexual positions that I haven't tried, people that I do not know intimately, etc. etc. I'm going to have to make a list of topics that I'm not qualified to express an opinion on, and religiously adhere to it. Thanks for the tip, Rich......JMJ graemlins/thumbsup.gif </font>
Stop being so damn sensitive all the time!! </font>
Not sensitive at all. I was there, I got there right about midnight and I had to stand in line for a few minutes. The place was full of the hip hop heads so I found a seat and stayed in it. I had a good time but getting to the VIP room was a bit challenging for me to get to with all the people in the place. I stayed til about 4am.

your welcome! Wasn't your fault, you know that... you had just as tough as a time as I did. That crowd just wanted to hear stuff they 'always' hear. graemlins/sleep.gif

Peace On the behalf of my hubby and crew, Slicks was pretty good. They got in with no problem, Andre was hot as usuall as well as the other dj's (can't remember their names). The food was exceptional and the crowd was okay. Too bad I missed it, I love to hear Andre play anywhere.
It is sad to hear that the door crew were being buttheads about being selective but the people I spoke with didn't have not one problem getting in.

I'm willing to bet there were quite a few of the house heads that were either turned away or made to wait and ultimately left. I would agree with this. It was not a very house-friendly environment (which I knew coming in), but Andre asked me to play so I played. I liked the room and the system, but I would guess 90% of the crowd wanted to hear hip hop. I also wondered where all the heads were, and I had no idea about the door drama. That's just plain ****ed up. I would probably not play or party there again unless it was clearly identified as "our" night.

I was talking to my boys about this last night and they said they had problems there too, and we grew up with the doorman up in Evanston and my boy mike was sittin there talking to him, and he still would'nt let him in. My boys ain't no thugs, they are legit business men and one's an actor, and they pulled up in Benz's and still did'nt get in. I don't know what kind of crowd there looking for, but its messed up.

I KNOW ANDRE PLAYS THERE ON SAT. BUT I THINK IT WOULD HAVE BEEN WISE TO HAVE IT ON SUNDAY. THATS A NIGHT WHEN ITS HOUSE/DISKO ALL NIGHT. WHY WASN'T THAT LEAST ATTEMPTED? RATHER THAN HAVING IT ON A HIP HOP /REGGAE /R&B /TOP 20 DISCO NIGHT. graemlins/jpshakehead.gif
