View Full Version : stereotypes and etiquettes about what we should drink or not
There's something I've noticed mostly in Europe, is that men will be drinking beer or whiskey and nothing but. So when a guy asks for a glass of wine in a pub or a bar, this might be frowned upon.
I like Bailey's. There, I've said it. I once ordered Bailey's in a bar and a british friend of mine told me I'd be shot dead in a London if I had ordered a Bailey's in a pub. Now what the f*** is this? A few weeks later, I caught him ordering a Bailey's in a club, maybe my "courageous" act opened up his mind a bit. I drink like a fish when it comes to wine.
Why are we men stuck with these traditionally "manly" drinks when there are perfectly good and tasty drinks waiting to be engulfed down our throats? graemlins/cussing.gif
I just had to vent about it :D Thanks for reading.

Haha, now you WILL be in for a trip to heaven when coming to Belgium, the country where just about anything goes concerning drinks. Anybody can drink anything here without being looked upon, with beer, wine and longdrinks being most popular in clubs and on parties, champagne a close second :D
Your statements do apply to the majority of Europe though, Belgium and France being the exceptions IMO.

shot dead? hardly. I think that was over stating the point - Baileys about 3 or 4am on a club is nice - i drink it and i've never been sneered at. It used to have a bit of an image of being a drink you had at grandparents house at christmas - a bit like sherry. Personally I don't see the problem and having lived in london I have never experienced any agro over what I drink. "Lahn-Dan Geezers" drink lager [usually stella never fosters "Its awl chemik-ley innit"] but its the culture they're brought up in. Wine is never really seen to be drunk in pubs by blokes for some reason - personally I prefer a nice chardonnay to a pint anyday - I think all this boils down to is social conditioning.

Your experincing the same bullshit fool rule that states males should all watch footbal and women should drink from Half Pint glasses. Drink what like and **** anyone that advises anything else.
Males or females can use pint glasses
Woman can drink bear
Men can drink cocktails if they wish (just watch it with umbrellas and sparklers ;) )
Bailey's is a top tipple
I despair, it's like living in the last century here sometimes

Re: London, I have to say it might have something to do with social conditioning... hmm hmm, the guy I was speaking of is of rather traditional background, heavy football fan (but so am I!)... it's more about the people you hang around with.
I was in Bruxelles for 3 hours yesterday for a short meeting, beautiful. Well, I was just near the "Grande Place" and didn't get to see the rest of the city. Can wait to come back.
RED D: check yo mail.
PS. where is the gathering going to be held? In which city?

martin red, what's a "top tipple"? graemlins/rofl.gif
men who restrict drinks are men with something to prove to others...these are the men that ladies need to stay far, far away from... graemlins/grinyes.gif
I can count the number of drinks I have a year.
Don't drink much at all.
I did try Absinthe last night.

I'm in the land of drinking stereotypes up here in Newcastle.... never order a lager top (lager plus lemonade) round these parts.... although its more about how much you can drink, for both sexes, and I've always been a lighweight....
