View Full Version : Disco Strut Volume 3
Now is that a top-notch compilation or what?
I bet the 12-Inches of the featured songs are worth a small fortune.
That Hipnotic cut is soooo nice.

I finally got Volume 3 yesterday and that whole last side is unbelievable. I'd been after I Like It by Intrigue for a hell of a long time and will have to settle for having it on the compilation. The other two songs on that side are new to me and are great. I think that Hipnotic track went for close to $300 last time I saw one on eBay.

My copy of Flowers got sold to a school teacher in Essex about 13 years ago for £175, I'd be interested in its going rate nowadays.
I went down to the Kilburn Record Fair yesterday, a great place for picking up records but man, one of them dealers is really taking the piss with his prices.

anyone else feelin that cut? "Darker than Blue"?? I was always led to believe that was a 12" mix? I never thought that it could just be an edit, which makes a lot of sense now.
Mark, £175 was pretty average back then. I'm sure it would easily be 3 times that now!
That song brings back great memories for me. It was a MASSIVE modern soul record.

Mark O'Shaugnessy (Resolution Records) was behind that. He admits that there was no 12" & that both sides of the 7" were edited together.
I've seen a copy of Ujima go on eBay a couple of hours ago for $485 (Japanese buyer of course). Am I out of touch on todays prices or have eBay users/new breed big money collectors gone overboard and therefore made the prices soar ?

Hey Blackwax
Is that the one in Stafford this weekend ?
I know of that one but I'm not going. I don't go to many weekenders anymore, there appears to be too many (I was speaking to Andy Davies the other day & he has been to 7 already this year). I went to Southport the other month for the first time in 8 years, I remember going to the very first one then stopping around 1995, it was great to catch up with a few old faces from the past though.
the Asso cut is wicked, it's also on Ron Trent's "Musical Reflections" CD but not on the vinyl comp.

Actually, if you're still in touch with Mark O'S, maybe you could PM me his details. I lost touch with him a long time ago.

i got the album thanks to dustygroove yesterday and it is a dream. :D hail.gif and the compilation comes out to be real cheap considering that if you were to find these songs in their original 12-inch releases (and most of these songs came from tiny record labels which are long out of business and out-of-print), they would cost a small mint.
my absolute favorite was Major Harris "Gotta Make Up Your Mind"! when i first played this record, i must have played this tune at least three times before proceeding into Hipnotic's "Are You Lonely"...that supertight synth bass does me in and the keyboard notes that are prominent especially during the 13th to 16th counts of the chorus are cold...Major Harris sounds a lot like the late Phillipe Wynne and i am quite smitten with his vocal stylings. produced by the Ingram Brothers, i believe this is from his 1984 album on Philadelphia's Society Hill records. Ingram Brothers were on a roll during that time especially with another synth bass-heavy song called "i like it" from their "night stalkers" lp(????) by the way, the Major Harris "I Believe In Love" album is available on cd (the title song is gorgeous):

speaking of Society Hill, anyone has seen Julius Brown's "Sho Nuff" from 1985? this was probably another Ingram Brothers production and is a scorcher of a club song!
http://www.djfriendly.co.uk/images/hipnotic.jpg
Hipnotic's "Are You Lonely" is musical bliss with one of the highlights being the flute taking off during the bridge....
http://www.terra.es/personal2/eruiter/images/Large/Kim%20Covington.jpg
Street Level also released a record produced also by Hipnotic's Felder and Richardson called "All Of My Lovin" by Kim Covington. Has anyone heard this? given the production pedigree, this sounds like another winner...
my copy has Manhattan Rhythm's "Sweet lady" repeated in place of Mid Air's "Ease Out" on side C. has anyone else experienced this?
Starvue's "Body Fusion" is mad mellowness....i also really, really liked side 4, especially Intrigue's "I Like It"..."tonight's the night" probably was originally released on the UK's Elite records

I was NOT impressed to buy the vinyl of Ron Trent's Musical Reflections and see that Asso isn't on it, which is why I now need Disco Strut 2.
Kelvy, my first mix Gman ever posted started with that great Major Harris track. The mix is long gone, I think. I've been trying to get the LP the song came out on for a long time. I got an MP3 of Body Fusion last year and have played it over and over.

Kelvy, and anyone else who's picked this up - is side B on yours mis-centred? Mine is and it makes the McKinley Jackson & Starvue unlistenable :( Haven't noticed the Manhattan Rhythm but I'll check tonight.
