Is the damn cd 101 type electric guitar. Just came back from online shopping, almost every song sounds like it should be played on a lite jazz station...hey you guitar players, get a fuzz box, a wah wah pedal, and a Marshall stack, and Really Play Some Guitar. This smooth jazz shit is BORING..

Larry One of the mixes to A Bitch Named Joanna "Freak it" had a lovely guitar solo. Do you remember who did that solo. I was also wondering if this was the same cat that worked on "Spillin the Beans" released on Atlantic?

naaa man, that was a GUITAR, not a synth.

I have it on a mixtape. It was the second time I heard the track and it sounded as if Tony was playing 3 or more different version of the song.

The girl was speaking in spanish and the underlying track was stripped down to just the deep bassline (not that Korg M1 sounding bassline) and the beats. While she's speaking this guitar solo is playing. I'll sing it for you if you would like!!!!!! graemlins/rofl.gif

Groove we must be talking about different versions, cuz I mos def played some wild far out solo stuff on that joint, or at least one of the versions, but in general, we speak of the same song

Larry "I'm startin to feel like a musician again" Rauson </font>[/QUOTE]Here is the real problem: Some of the so-called "big name" DJ's produce or profit somehow from this crap, therefore they play this shit to the masses, and the wannabees that can't stray out of the box they've created for themselves fall in line like sheep and do the same thing, all the while convincing themselves that this shit is good because the "big name" DJ plays it. Young people don't want to hear lounge music, therefore house music stagnates, and unless we get younger people into the scene, house music will die like every other played-out genre of music.. Play what you feel, take some chances, and think outside of the box your trapped in musically. I have spoken......JMJ mad1.gif

BINGO...and we wonder why the music has been reduced to lounge music status...i said the same thing to someone over a year ago, that 'house' is gonna wind up in daytime rotation on CD101.9...

Larry (mentally going through his mixtapes) I do recall a version that has a solo and it sounds like a synth. Again the girl is speaking spanish. Then Darryl James starts playin friggin "Saturday" by De La soul and that pissed me off.

But I do possess a mix on cassette that has a real guitar solo. Unless this was done live while Tony was mixing I have yet to hear this version again. It's not on the 12 if my memory serves me.

In addition to the CD101.9 guits,

6 string basses!!!!!!! I'm gonna get someone MAD at me for that. As a matter of fact, 5 string, too.

Check that again, any bass that's NOT:
1) 4 string
2) Fender or MusicMan.

And smooth playing alto saxes. Tell some of these players that there are not Grover, Gary Bartz or David Sandborn. CD101 players' attempts to sound like them are awful. graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

I once went to a bass clinic w/Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey. S.B., who plays 6 string FRETLESS by the way, talked about a conversation he had with Jaco years ago and how was telling Jaco all the great things you can do with more strings, different techniques, etc. S.B. said Jaco just looked at him and said, "Well, I can already do all that with my 4 string." S.B. then said, "Well that pretty much ended the conversation right there."

Then S.B. went into a solo version of "Stairway To Heaven." Kick ass stuff.

Seeing him and Victor Wooten together was mind blowing stuff. Even past the typical bass player geek stuff, those two are just incredible musicians.

He is/was a Pittsburgher! Don't get me wrong though, WM could burn a fretboard! Not literally of course. That was Hendrix's signature.

The piano-sounding Aria Steve Bailey Pro 6. Prime example of the point I was trying to make.

School me please...I'm not hip to the difference in sound with 4 string bass vs 5/6 string bass

What are some famous tunes that incorporate basslines with a 5/6 string bass?

thanx

Without trying to be too technical. A standard 4 string bass, when plucked openly, are in the following keys: E,A,D and G. A standard 5 String bass has what is called a "low B string", as well as the E,A,D and G. If you were to play the low B string, it would have the sound, or register, of the extreme left side of a piano or keyboard.

Many bassists play 5 string to match the sounds of the left side (or left hand) of the keyboard or organ (which is very low). Listen to basslines of most contemporary gospel music, and you will get an idea.

A 6 string has all of the 5 strings mentioned, plus a string in the middle C (the middle of the piano). Cats who want to play in upper registers, or sound like guitars, prefer 6 string basses. The music of bassist John Pattitucci is a prime example.

Hope that's a good explanation. Peace.
