Is it a type of dance?
If so, where in Chicago or its surrounding areas can I see this done?

the very tool of the devil..... graemlins/puke.gif

bachata is supposed to be this real nice and slow, dance nice and close to your partner and always cliched to death by this "anemic guitar" thang.

me-no-like...too touchy feely in a real bad way... :(

Its a cross between Merengue and ol skool traditional music of the 40s-50s from P.R...and peeps like to dance real close to it.lol its like turning the clock backwards our ancestors but adding the flavor or merengue from Santo Domingo..Latin people go nutz for this music..its the "in" thing for some time now.Especially in Nyc.To me I dislike it,I play it when Im doing a mobile dj gig or something, cause if you dont play a bachata track you most likely will get jumped! lol lol .. :D ;)

Try some Freschetta?

I am in no way intending to tarnish the image of a "dance form" or a culture. Please forgive me if I have offended anyone.

graemlins/conf44.gif </font>[/QUOTE]cumbia is bombness only because it's a direct derivative of my own personal sweetheart "vallenato"

vallenato is this older and traditional colombian sentimental sort of "tropical waltz" if you will.. ;)

cumbia is more sped up...more fun but still alright....for sure TEN times more tasteful than bachata a-n-y-d-a-y!!

:D

Funny ass peeps..lol NO CULTURE I tell you..lol Cumbia is from Columbia for which Bachata kinda of ripped off and added that dreadful guiter in the background, but in all seriousness this is part of the Latin Culture(music wise) so I cannnot deny my ancestors for making this guiter riff, unfortunatly the music has evolved in Bachata. Its almost like bring disco back with a 50s smile.gif sound to it.

from what i briefly read, bachata had its origins in countryside parties within the Dominican Republic whereby the hosts would gather friends that were musicians and play at the gatherings...this remained a phenomenon for many years within the countryside but was labeled backwards and caucaphonic by its mainstream detractors whom were usually urbane and had a greater affinity towards merengue...lately, it has been blowing up and the music can usually be heard in Latin stations specializing in the pop Tropical (read: Caribbean-based) format...one of its biggest stars is Anthony Santos...

the melody is very melancholic and parallels the blues in the sense that the content matter usually revolves around infidelity, lost lovers, and double entendres. not my cup of tea.

by the way, who was that cat that came up with that "que me lo peguen pero que no me dejen" (loosely translated: you can cheat all you want but don't leave me) song that hit big in '98??
