The MAW beach party was OFF THE FREAKIN ROCKER!
Half court b-ball on the left, a bboy cypher on the right, a Wild Style-esque mural in the back and Jazzy Jeff on the wheels of steel absolutely MURDERING it.
The YO pool party was in a close running for winning best party of the conference... great music, great crowd, plenty of space and just overall a good ass time.
The MAW party at Opium Gardens proved once again that they know how to throw a damn party. As corny as it is gonna sound, when Kevin Hedge dropped the music, flooded the dance floor with fog and brought in the lights, that sh*t was like MAGIC.
DOOOOON'T CHAAAANGE FOOOOOOOOR MEEEEEEEE
The DHP Miami party was hot to death.. Donna Edwards BLAZED it with Brighter Days et al but I was sick as hell and couldn't stay around long enough to hear everyone else.
I couldn't make it too the Wave, Soulfuric, or King Street parties but I heard they were all BANGIN' as well.... reviews ?
Also, nice seein Buddy Love, Rated M, Big Will, Michael Fossati, Robbi, the YO camp, Kelvy, Darrow, etc etc again this year, as always, it was a pleasure...
Nice meeting Mynia, Jamie 3:26, Bernie, Ruben Toro (sp?), Todd Gardner, Agent Double A, etc etc .... it was definitely a pleasure.
...ohh yeah, and how could I forget the man, the legend, the exploding short stack of energy himself, Lil Ray.... nice to finally meet you man.
I have one request... can someone PLLLLEASE turn the damn sun down a notch or two next year...
...either that or install showers in the clubs or something. It felt like you'd been running a 50 mile marathon in the rain forest in the summer time while wearing a triple ply trash bag over your whole body by the time you got to the club.
That, and some of these clubs need to turn the AC up just a weeeeee little bit when its 9 billion degrees outside.
Peace!
Time to start recovering.

WMC was off the hook for me! I say that because I met some people who said that they were a little disappointed. I sure wasn't. A friend I was with commented that the parties we went to lacked variety, and that it was too much soft, vocal house. Well, that's the way I like it, so I am not complaining.
Wednesday--The Soulfood party at Riande got me going, especially Spinna's performance. The sound was ON! The only regret is missing the Needs-- I really wanted to hear how their dj'ing compares to their productions. The Yellorange party was nice, but I regret missing Tony. What's up with him going on early in the evening? I expected that he would close the night, so I was rather disappointed.
Thursday--The Elements of Life party will be much talked about for a long time to come, and for good reason. It was the party of the conference. It was magical and spiritually uplifting. Kevin Hedge's words were a perfect lead in to live performances of Brand New Day and Elements of Life. At this point I was just freaking out from amazement!
Right after Elements, I headed over to the Chicago house party, which was sparsely attended, but novertheless Glenn Undergound proceeded to play my favorite set of the conference. Only Somebody is a stunning piece of music. The other cd's of unreleased stuff Glenn was playing were amazing as well.
The Large party was hot as well. Roy Davis was really into it, and played a very spiritual set. I was saddened by the news that Kerri Chandler couldn't make it to WMC due to personal reasons, and I hope him and his family are doing well.
By Friday, I was completely exausted, so chillin' by the pool during the Yellorange pool party was just fine with me. Kenny Bobien blessed us with "Reach", and the other vocalists--Dawn Tallman, Darryl D'Bonneau, Barbara Tucker, were all on fantastic.
At this point I realized that I hadn't heard any Detroit shit yet, so I went over to the Detroit meets Miami party at Rain, where Rolando played a great Detroit techno/house set.
The Chateau Noir party was great as well, but I was really struggling to stand up at that point. Too much walking in the sun, and man it was hot and humid--I am gonna have nightmares about walking on Collins Ave.
Saturday--the DHP party was set ablaze by Donna Edwards. It was a pleasure to meet some of the DHP members--Chris Aquillo, Bernie, Kelvy, Donna Edwards, Timmy Richardson, Lil Ray, Princess Tam Tam, Jamie 3:26, Master Kev, Jon Martin, Keith Blackstone, Buddy Love, and others.
Right before I had to leave for the aiport, I stopped by the Made in Detroit party where Mike Clark, Norm Talley, and Blake Baxter were playing some serious music, and made me regret that I had to leave.
Miami is a wild city. I didn't really comprehend hot crazy it really is. It was pretty much drugs, sex, and house all the way. I really enjoyed my 4 days. It was amazing to be in a place where everywhere you went, you heard house music blasting--most hotels, restaraunts, lounges and clubs in the area had something going on at all times. Pretty much house paradise. :D

*My deepest condolences to Kerri and his family. I heard why he couldn't make it to the conference.*

Dj Nori in the small room...GREAT selections...and the room was air conditioned and the bartenders made some of the strongest drinks in that room.
Marlon D set the place on fire with his set.
The OPUS Sound System was awesome!!!
David Morales entrance...everybody taking pictures....then he went upstairs and ripped it!
Kenny Bobian was really good, as usual, with the mike/monitor problems.
Kevin Hedge playing the real music for the heads....and we giving back the energy to him.
The venue was awesome and very comfortable.
It was the best party to set us up for the week.
No real door drama.....at least not for a New Yorker who knows how to handle the unlucky person who is stuck at the door.
Thank you. I like how you mention giving back energy ... So many times when people are out and about getting their party-on, they forget it's a two way relationship between the Dj and the crowd. Anyway, back to reading people's reviews.

Anyone notice how the streets of South Beach during the WMC are being overrun now with hip-hop stuff...
.... people trying to pressure you into buying their wack ass demo CD's, people trying to park on the block and bump their wack ass systems, and people forcing 15 flyers down your throat at every damn corner ....
.. and the DJ Clue "official Winter Music Conference" party was of particular interest to me....
I thought the conference was a dance music conference, are they starting to integrate Hip-Hop into it for cash flow or something ?
Peace

Deesko aint lyin...That shit was ILL! My first time in Miami and it was DEFINITELY an experience.
I would have to say the 2 parties tied for first place in my book were the MAW Elements of Life party @ Opium and the MAW basketball party on the beach. The Basketball party has the edge for me cuz it felt like a true party....dancers, smiles, ill ass DJ (Jazzy Jeff) playin hip-hop the way it was meant to be played, half court game...I dont know...the vibe was just very strongly positive...
But all the parties were good...The DHP party was hot is every way, music, temperature, etc..hahhaha
The King Street party was a good way to start off the week....Master Kev ripped it yet again...
Really, way too much went on durin the week to cover in one post...But a couple things I MUST mention:
Cuban Sandwiches
Call-A-Cab
Women
What more could a guy ask for..hahaha
Oh yeah, and I have a picture of the piece from the MAW Basketball party... http://www.outofbreath.com/mawstyle.jpg
That's all for now...
Peace.

Are those South Beach blocks long or what!?
Compost Records once again threw a kickass party! Right next door Fourplay was holding it down. The Kingstreet party was sweeeeeeet! Julius "The Mad thinker" and JoJo Flores ripped it at the Marlin daytime. The most surreal moment was Tony Humphries making the booth monitor start on fire at the YO poolside. Security at Goddess decided an hour b4 midnite not to except badges for the OM party, pissed us off. Daniel Spencer had everyone at Playwright dancing. Half of my set at Sabor was done without a monitor and headphones, yippee. Went to a cool Drum and bass party where they had free Bacardi and Cokes and a new type of cooler by Asti. Jovonn ripped it at Chateau Noir. Brian Borden and Whyteout had us jumpin', sweatin' and screamin' at the D.H.P. party. Mark farina and Gene Ferris tag teamed to beat the heck out of the crowd at the Au revoir party.
The conference itself had a huge registration BUT a real low turnout. Another thing was that they had progressive jocks spinning throughout the conference. 'Sup wit dat!?
It was cool meeitng all my D.H.P. peeps in person. smokin.gif

My input....
It started Monday night with the Soulfuric party. Met Spirit of House's Michael Fossati, Rated-M (you're going to love his photo I took smile.gif ), Soulfuric Record's Marc Pomeroy and OM Records/Deep-LA party DJ Marques Wyatt. A young lady gave me a free pass for Tuesday's Magic Sessions (can't refuse free stuff). The music was OK, I stayed for a little while to get ready for Tuesday.
After registering for the conference, I went to the King Street party. Some good music and a couple of girls working as walking billboards. After walking past me several times, I asked them if they were willing to put my business cards on their bodies--they did!!! After a couple of hours of techno music during the party, I left to get ready for the Magic Sessions. During the Magic Sessions, Tony played a very nice set highlighted by Ann Nesby's "Shelter" cut. I went upstairs after a few minutes of Ted Patterson's set to hear Dimitri From Paris. And what a set he played!!! I met Jaime Lewis who heads Purple Music upstairs who is a very cool guy there as well.
Wednesday included sitting in on a "Record Deal--The Basics" session which had some interesting information. After the session, I took a bus to South Beach, I saw Master Kev who put me on the guest list for Yellorange's party that evening (very nice of him :D ). I checked out the BeatDownSounds party for a few minutes which was fantastic! Met Ultra there. I went to Music 101's party and caught Whyteout's gig at the last minute. I also checked out Sweden's group Sumo who had the people going crazy with their combination DJ/live instruments set. Met Lil Ray there and chatted with a member of Sumo for a few minutes after their set. He gave me a copy of their album on CD (I already have that album on vinyl, but who is going to refuse free stuff :D ). Afterwards, I went back to my hotel room to get ready for Yellorange's party at the Code Lounge. Many of the Yellorange DJs played including Tony Humphries. Master Kev, Chris Conrad, David Tobon, and the others played very nice sets and had the crowd jumping. Others there were: Jaime 3:26, a DJ I know from Oakland, Ultra, Myrnia, Whyteout, & others. I stayed until the very end (5am), got breakfast afterwards, and went back to my hotel to sleep!!
Thursday was highlighted by the "Soul on the Beach" party at the Clevlander. What great music there!!! Bobby & Steve played there (slamming tunes they played), the saxaphonist from Soulfuric (I think) played over the music, plus others. I finally met Maria & Tamara (the Hoochie Productions team) plus the Canos were there. A huge crowd was there and really enjoyed themselves. This was one of the better parties I attended during WMC. I was too exausted from the previous night to attend other parties (too many parties too spread out over Miami Beach to attend) and returned back to my hotel.
Friday was highlighted by attending the in-store appearance of Blaze at Specs Music. Very nice people I talked with including Mel Cheren, Kevin Hedge, (didn't speak to Josh unfortunately), & other members of West End Records who were there. I purchased the "Spiritually Speaking" CD that they were promoting as well. I also dropped by WhoRadio's Chicago House party and saw Greg Gray, Glenn Underground, Craig Alexander, Jaime 3:26, & others. The party was a little slow, thus afterwards, I walked down to the "Let The Singer Be Heard" party hosted by Yellorange. The Music Plant crew performed as well as Barbara Tucker. Terry Hunter spun a nice set before Tony Humphries went on. Tony played a set that was so hot, THE LEFT DJ MONITOR WOOFER LITERALLY CAUGHT FIRE!!! My DJ friend from Oaktown was there as well as the DJ for the Devotion party, Ruben Mancias. Ruben has a track featuring Michelle Weeks coming out on his label Devotion Records that will be distributed by Shelter Records next month. Something tells me this is a track to look out for!!! I also met one half of DeepSwing aka the Sunkids aka the Audiophiles (they did "Rescue Me" with Chance a few years ago). I mentioned to Erik that I met their "Manager" while I was in London a few years ago as well as that I knew the "Sunkids" was one of their alias. He enjoyed that so much I got one of their last promos he was promoting at the conference.
Saturday was record shopping day at Uncle Tom's I mean Uncle Sam's record shop graemlins/spanka.gif . After spending $128 on records, it was time to hold back on spending money some and get ready for the DHP party that night.
The party started slowly, but picked up much steam during the night. GU, Donna Edwards, Jaime 3:26, & others really made the night worth it. I was told approximately 400+ people attended the party. This should let people here on the board know that this can happen weekly in Chicago if we are humble, organized, and totally unified & committed to making parties here a smashing success!!
I took a little over 100 photos during WMC, many which I will post on Global Soul. The DHP party photos will be posted on this board in a few days.
This being my first WMC was very enjoyable. I only regret not getting a cheaper room that was closer to the parties :( Oh well, I made many contacts that I hope will result in great things for Deep House Page and Global Soul in the coming months.
Many other things happened, but these were the highlights of the conference for me.
Cheers,

wmc was hot!
my fav party was absolutely the MAW elements of life party. the performances were absolutely off the hook out of control.
I wanted a promo bag so bad i could taste it, but unfortunately, my strings didn't pull when i pulled on them.
when kevin played with the fog, wow. that was intense. and raoul! OMG. he is so great.
i really liked hitting shelter anniversary and then wmc right after.
louie at magic sessions, he played that "back in the day" record twice! the crowd was going bananas!
by the way, i asked him what that was, and he said its harry choo choo and robert owens. gotta get that one.
the large party was dope, Dennis F ripped it like crazy!
what was that party with jellybean, spinna, marlon d, etc, at the riande and the opus system? that was hot. underground collective, right?
the king street pool party was really nice, but the sound system placement really started to get to me after a while. the delay was driving me nuts.
beyond that, the best things were meeting some of the peeps from the board, and the opus sound sysem was on!
what up ray, timmy, mark, whyteout... and to everyone else, i forgot your names, my bad.
south beach is too crazy sometimes, all that traffic... I need to get a system of party scheduling going, because many times I thought I was all set for all my parties, and then i'd forget my list or an address, or it would be over because i didn't write down the time. anyone else have that problem?

whew......
i just got back to work...had to take a day off yesterday cuz i was SO damn tired...
the whole WMC was off da hook with the exception of a few things....
the weather was in full effect and i have to come back to so-so things here...
there were some slammin parties.....my faves were the YO poolside one, the one the Jon Martin had on the down low was phat(almagest...you are the man!!!), and the Maw/Maxim Magazine thing(i liked better the the Elements party)...Deesko/Rob summed it up the best about that one....
it was great to see a lot of my peeps and kats that i'd met there in the past..too many to name...
it was good to finally meet kats that i know from the board: Jamie, Bernie Brown, Agent Double A & his boy, Momi(a real beautiful sista), and a few others..........
the only wack things about it were that in our hotel: the Seville there was a fire and after it was put out the air conditioning did NOT work for 3 damn nights.......how in the hell are you supposed to sleep when it's muggy as hell???? to top it off, there was NO ice in any of the machines at all........the place was ghetto as hell....won't be staying there any more....
the next bad thing was the when Big Will & i rolled up to the Crobar for the MS, this clown at the door tells us that we can't get in with shorts on.......fitting when it's 90 degrees outside....then i go down to buy some sweats(i ran into Louis Benedetti going to buy some pants too)and when i get in, guess????? kats in full force with shorts on......i was PISSED but forgot it when Pop/Tony turned it out......
the song on the conference for me was Whiplash & Turner's "Don't Go Lose Your Pride" on Purple Music...SLAMMIN vocal and a must have...i can't wait to make my WMC mixes...a ton of good stuff was out......
now it's back to work...damn!!!!

thanks to all you guys who came out to the DeepHousePage, Chicago Revisited, Groove Promo Party (Roots) and made it one of the best parties of this years wmc. Everyone stuck to the program minus Donna Edwards who people were asking when she was going to bust out some disko. but never the less she played great house classics and some current stuff. it started with Jaimie, Cris and myself, and leading into donna edwards, craig alexander, glen underground, brian borden, whyteout, dj spun and a early morning sleaze set by cris and brian borden. the party went till 7am. there were people there since 5pm and by 2am the party was rocking so hard, people had to run outside gasping for air from the overload of good music. the owner was even cool enough to let us drink right on the street as long as we had cups. looking forward to next year. we're working on a 300 capacity Mansion on the beach where there will be a cover and free drinks all night, cross your fingers people. don't forget Craig Alexander @ Roots (2345 W Belmont Chicago ) 4/4/03
