ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- Maynard Jackson Jr., who took on Atlanta's establishment as the city's first black mayor and later helped plan for its role as host of the 1996 Olympics, died Monday in Washington. He was 65.

Democratic Party officials confirmed the death, but did not release any details. He had major heart surgery in 1992 after doctors found six arterial blockages.

He made history when, at age 35, he was elected Atlanta's first black mayor in 1973.

With a booming voice and wide girth, he made his presence known immediately by taking on the predominantly white business leadership and demanding that doors be opened to blacks.

Some folks felt he wasn't doing enough to catch the cad. Others felt that Wayne Williams was a scapegoat to save the mayor's political career. Is that accurate?

My condolences to his family.

I had the opportunity to meet him when he had dinner with my father at our home in Georgia on Jan. 1, 1970. Maynard is responsible for very much of what Atlanta is today.

Maynard's passing is yet another wakeup call about diet and health, he was just way to heavy. in spite of that he looked great. He should have been the Chair of the DNC and he would have followed Ron Brown's example of leading the Dems to victory, the decision to allow Terry McAullife instead of Maynard changed the course of history.

Just found out I have a high level of heavy metals coursing through my bloodstream - Mercury, Cadmium, Valerium (I think). A crazy detox regimen is in order now.

mhd's comment about Maynard Jackson makes me think about the availability of healthcare and the awareness of alternative medicine and holistic health techniques in urban communities. I would not have known the above if I didn't visit an acupuncturist/metabolic specialist regularly.

My memories of when Maynard was elected all the press he was given in Jet & Eboney mags (don't remember if we were getting and Black Enterprise was in motion at that time - may have just been when Earl Graves was begining). I was young then, but I was always aware of who he was and why his election was such a big deal.

I am in agreement that not making him the head of the DNC was a grave error on the part of the party.
Does anyone have information on when the funeral is being held and/or any write ups?

I am familiar with him.I just wanted to know when the Atlanta child murders happened,is that how Andy Young got in the mix and won his seat?I was pretty young around that time and I just remember seeing and hearing of Andy Young as ATL's mayor.

I did some reading up on him and big ups to him.He stood up to the good ol boy network.
