View Full Version : 2 Left Feet or The "Off Beat" Problem

I'll preface what I'm about to say with this: I'm not a skilled, professional or trained dancer or anything like that. I just groove according to how I feel. That being said. I've developed this problem. In the past month of going out, I've had a really hard time staying on beat. I feel the music, I'm moved, I enjoy it but a few seconds later I realize I'm waaaaay off. Not necessarily the kind of off anyone might notice (eek) but I feel off. One minute I'm grooving, next thing I'm chasing the beat. I was wondering if this happens to anyone else and if there's anything they do to help get them back on beat.

2 Off beat Left Feet graemlins/conf44.gif Heeheehee!! Do you know sometimes when I got ma groove on I'm sure sometimes people must be laughing 'cause I feel myself doing some ridiculous movements that I just can't seem to help (music running through you'n all that!).

Heh, heh ... nev m
Oh, I don't kid myself that much. I'm sure people could be laughing at my "moves" even when I feel on beat. I'm bothered by feeling "off beat" not the "off beat" moves. ;)

My suggestion is to go with it and make it work for you. If you find that you are off beat make it happen a couple more times, next thing you know you have created a rhythm within being off beat. I intentionally do this quite often:)

I find it hard NOT to dance on beat. My old roommate and I have discussed this and we found it pretty much impossible to dance off beat. graemlins/conf44.gif

Man, I would just try not to think about it. Just dance and you'll be on rhythm, and if you aint, who the hell really cares anyway? Its not like its a dance competition. :D

Feel the music, BE the music. :D Don't think about your steps, just let the vibe flow through you. If all else fails, blame it on the DJ. ;)

You know, maybe just getting it out helped me. Over the weekend I ended up checking out 95N on Saturday night @ Red in DC. Whatever combination of elements that needed to be there were! graemlins/clap.gif
Felt good getting back "On my beat." Thanks for the kind words TH woman ... You know maybe that is what's happening ... I'm learning to work with my "off" beat ..

Yeah but I try not to concentrate on the way I'm dancing. Sometimes I dance to certain instruments in the song and not always just the beat. even the vocals make me move

On a related note, what about the phenomenon that occurs when you leave the club for a blunt, come back in and start grooving, only to have the song you were dancing to completely change tempo, rhythm, tune, etc. once you concentrate a little bit. I call it, "green ear"...

It's happened to me quite a few times ... For the positive anyway. Trying to figure out how I can make it happen all the time without 'green.'
