just anything that moves you?
ones you know that there's a high likelihood you'll get cleared by the publisher? (is there a list of artists somewhere who are know to give clearence, and those who don't. I've heard of music companies having such lists for clearing samples.)
songs you have a vision for?
i'm kinda wondering if some of my remixes will clear, and what's the best way to avoid that problem, once i decide a song is worthy of me putting in some hours . my decisions on songs start with what moves me, and what i can't get out of my head, unless i do something with. and also, if i think it has real potential. a bit vague, i know.
thanks

Leonard Remix should have helpful hints on this when he gets on.

You just go too damn deep man.Just remix a song, cause that's what ya want to do.All that other shit comes up later.
Magic eight ball. No seriously, I usually re-edit tracks that weren't "DJ friendly" when they were released, meaning hard to mix into or out of. For me it's about restructuring the track the way I always wanted to hear it.....JMJ

Its a rough game with dance departments being closed. Most mixes are done on spec(with no big name involved), so there is no guaranteed method. Do what moves you and hope the artist will clear a budget for it.
It cost about $5,000.00(average) per song to clear for release on your own label.

Doing this saves me having to buy doubles, unless I want to have them for the enjoyument of extending a cut live.Sometimes doing it live is jsut fun.
Christian, like I said before, just do ya thang,if you have to think long and hard about everything, you may lose that spontaneity.
That's one of the reasons, when I purcahse a new computer,it will be in my lab.I have to run upstairs if I want to remix something.Hell,by the time I get upsatirs,I may have forgot the idea.

But even having doubles doesn't turn a 4 bar intro into an 8 or 16, so now I'm re-editing. I've got my computer set up next to all of my other stuff (keyboards, samplers, drum machines, hard disc multitrack recorders, turntables, mixer, reel, etc.)......JMJ

thanks WHATEVER YOU DO JUST DON'T OVER DO IT; BUT SOME SONGS DON'T NEED TO BE REMIXED OR RE-MADE; I THINK SONGS BY MARVIN GAYE AND STEVIE WONDER SHOULD BE SUNG BY THOSE ARTIST ONLY; EDITS ARE A DIFFERENT STORY BUT DON'T OVER DO THOSE EITHER WITH THE GADGETS THEY GOT OUT NOW SOME FOLK JUST GO WAY TO FAR WITH CERTIAN TUNES
