View Full Version : Last night I DJed without head phones

Forgot or lost the phono jack to plug in my headphones to the mixer at a DJing gig last night, so had to do 4 hours without headphones.
Only slipped up once in all that time (played a record at 33rpm not 45rpm).
It was quite a liberating experience in a way. It made me listen to each record and I had to think a bit more about what to play etc. etc.
The music was "chill-out" downtempo stuff...so it was easier.
Anyone else gone a whole night at a gig without headphones before?

Also, there's an art to cueing without hearing first and making sure there's no "quiet" for longer than a couple of seconds - makes a nice natural pause in a way.

I never used headphones because I don't know how to use them.
I never touch the pitch, because I don't need to.
The only I am touching when playing music is "Slide/phono 1" and Slide/Phono 2"
If you want to know how I sound like, Check out my latest mixshow:

I had one of my best nights djing doing that once when I forgot my headphones. What I figured out was to put my ear down real close to the headshell of the non-playing record and use the hi-end sounds generated by the needle to beat match. That would probably be harder for downtempo, since it has more spaced out rhythms, but it worked great for house. It's amazing those little noises from the needle are even audible in a crowded, banging club, but they're actually pretty loud if you stick your head down near the record.
You're right that it makes you listen to the sound system really carefully. It was a great lesson for me because I'm usually too caught up in listening to what's going on in the headphones.

I pratice this at home all the time. I drop in a beat at the first kick and adjust it on the fly....

Yea, the radio show I use to help do back in Florida with Randy Lee.
Sometimes we didn’t have a mixer so we would DJ ‘of the board’.
Its got this TINY and mean TINY little tinty que speaker way on the other side of the board form where the tables were.
You could barley use it at all to cue but sometimes you just got busy anyways and could pull off some nice mixes.
I hated it.

Careful visual observations of the grooves will also be road signs for this and that - info.
Then the third ear and the third eye can play and have some fun too....
