View Full Version : Is it because they are black?

why do people disrespect black entrepeneurs and not white ones?
Is it because they are black?
Why do cats pull that shady not show up at the club on time so that you get the late nite spot you feel you deserve crap at Shelter...would they do the same at the new Crobar?..why not?
Is it because they are black?
Why is it that Shelter can throw a free party that has some technical problems and be flagellated online...yet few people say word one about waiting outside Opium Gardens for 1 to 2 hours in the blazing Miami sun because that show is late?
Is it because they are black?
Why would someone say on another thread that Shelter should not get the benefit of the doubt?
Is it because they are black?
Why aint anyone talk about the sound difficulties at the basketball party in miami yet mad peeps got beef with the sound at a nyc outdoor party?
Is it because they are black?
Why do people question where the donation for summerstage is going too (oogah boogah those blacks is making off with our loot, you know how dishonest THEY are?
Is it because they are black?
Why so little words of praise for putting on an incredible 22 HOURS of events?
Is it because they are black?
Why dis Robbi who promotes to a minority crowd so that y'all have something to do yet say nothing about the scads of promoters who don't want your NIGGER and SPIC asses in their establishments?
Is it because they are black?
I'll tell you the truth...i am strictly about the money at this point in life and will never throw an event for househeads at all....You people are broke and stupid and have a complete lack of class...to dis people who put out for y'all and get so little return is why i have walked away from the scene...****ing ghetto ass ungrateful ****ers.....if Timmy and company were smart they would get rid of their current clientele and go for the moneyt (btw...my spot is opening this fall and i don't give a fig if most of you come or not...cause y'all aint got a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of)

I really want to see this topic develop because it is good and bring up some genuine points that others(lame-o-s, fake ones, PLUR bastards) shake in their boots to talk about.
Let's talk about it!
Is it because they are black?

I'm honestly asking you (seriously) why you would continue to be part of a community which you have made clear, in no uncertain terms, you despise. Would you please answer that? Maybe you post with the thought to always put people on blast, but I'm really trying to understand your logic in making the statements you make (I'm never doing a house party again; yall are broke, ghetto, ignant, etc.), yet staying part of this board AND the scene.
Your other comments targeted at trying to make me "go away" or feel bad or whatever aren't working, love. I really just want to understand your POV on the "I hate yall, but I'm still here" thing.

Well, I thought I was addressing part of the topic at hand as put forth by the thread-starter, but...regarding the "is the Shelter judged more harshly becuz its owners/promoters are black?", I'd say probably. I think black and brown folk still suffer from the "white man's ice is colder" mentality, and will always be more exacting in their expectations and assessments of their own. But I have to assume that black and Latino business owners know that they have to be twice as good to be considered average by whites, so that standard of excellence should already be there when dealing with their own people.
However, I don't think that black- or Latino-owned businesses should have the expectation that they will get a pass from their own BECAUSE they are black or brown. I have had the experience with some black-owned businesses that they expect you to settle for less, deal with poor customer service, irregular hours, missing or defective product or late payment BECAUSE they are black. That ain't cool.
I cannot speak on the Shelter situation specifically, because I wasn't there this past weekend, nor have I ever visited the club.

I very well could not be understanding many other perspectives here ... but and here are a few questions that might help me understand what I ... er ... am not getting (?) graemlins/conf44.gif
*How much appreciation is enough appreciation? What do people consider too little praise for a job well done? What would be considered a fair demonstration of appreciation? (A 15 page thread? 15 threads on the same topic? An entire thread devoted to nothing but what people enjoyed?). How is this to be determined? Why is it that although there are a number of people who have stated just how great a time was had, there is still more focus on those asking questions?
*Should people effectively demonstrate their sincere appreciation (to meet the pre-established rules outlined in the How to Give Dap Handbook) -and have a question as to why certain parts of the night didn't go as planned - How are they to ask these questions without it nullifying their demonstration of appreciation?
*Does anyone think it's okay to ask questions of the Shelter about this event. If not, why not, if so, why so.
*If no one had asked any questions about the parts of the night that didn't go off as planned, as in everyone wrote in what a wonderful time they had - Would that have been a Better "Realview" of the event?
*Is it the opinion of the shelter that it's nobody's business? If so ... Okay ... That would qualify as their answer and life goes on.
*It's okay for some to not be curious ... Can it be okay for some to be curious?

Aha! Right here ... I think I'm finally understanding the intensity behind people's annoyance. Reading your response, my eyes were drawn to the the quoted section. I was thinking "misrepresentation" as a word can't be that harmful ... (I was defining it in my head using different words). So I decided to look it up to see what definition is given:

Perhaps I'm over simplifying but I feel the outrage has been fueled more by the improper use of the word "misrepresentation," than it has a deep believe that no one appreciates the Shelter or says thank you enough.
Most definitions I found for misrepresentation implied a willful intent to deceive. I know I don't (and a lot of people here don't) believe the Shelter intended to deceive ...

So now what ... Rather than continuing the arguments ... what are people's suggestions on the best way to resolve the tensions ...
Or we all just going to say **** it ... ? Heh, heh. biggrinangel.gif

and Lobo Tomi you have now pointed out the "white elephant" standing in the middle of the room!!
this is not much different than the incessant criticism aimed at black athletes, and the media's portrayal of them as overpaid and spoiled, despite the fact that they earn a fraction of what top corporate executives do, and contribute a whole lot more to the performance of their organizations.
it's a shame that race plays such a powerful role in BOTH the disproportionate complaints aimed in certain directions, as well as the often emotional and illogical rebuttals.
the question remains however, when will WE (u know who) get our acts together?? it's easy to ignore the unfair criticism, but i am still a bit pained by the actions that open the doors for this criticism...

The easiest thing for me to do is answer some of these from my perspective and not try to speak for a whole population of people. I guess it is up to you to read individual responses and then move towards or away from generalizations about why people are motivated to do or say what they do.
I'll take a stab at a couple of them...(and for some I'd like some clarification before even attempting to answer)...
"why do people disrespect black entrepeneurs and not white ones? Is it because they are black?"
This question asks something as though it were already assumed to be the truth. Are you saying that white entrepreneurs always get respect and that black ones never do?
"why do cats pull that shady not show up at the club on time so that you get the late nite spot you feel you deserve crap at Shelter...would they do the same at the new Crobar?..why not? Is it because they are black?"
I've only been to Crobar once for some Frankie Knuckles thing a few July's ago and the crowd was majority-black, so I'm not clear about the issue here? Is Crobar not usually black? Are you implying that DJs (regardless of color) show more respect to a clubnite with mainly whites than they do for one with mainly blacks? DJs don't do no-shows at white events? If they do, does the ocurrence of a no-show at a black event imply a race issue (disrespect for blacks) and a no-show at a white-event imply...what?
"Why is it that Shelter can throw a free party that has some technical problems and be flagellated online...yet few people say word one about waiting outside Opium Gardens for 1 to 2 hours in the blazing Miami sun because that show is late? Is it because they are black?"
Doesn't this question assume or imply that the same people who went to Summerstage and complained about the sound also went to Opium Gardens and experienced the wait outside but yet did not complain online? I went to Summerstage and yeah...I had issues with the sound and said so (though I also included in my post the things I enjoyed). I also went to Opium Gardens for the MAW EOL party, but I didn't stand in line in the blazing sun. I walked right in. Maybe it was a different party you are referring to? The point I'm making (and probably poorly) is that I see you connecting dots from these two events that aren't really all that connectable, though I do definitely understand the notion you are getting at. The answer to your question could easily be (for some)..."I wasn't there" or "I didn't wait". I think your question about the basketball party in Miami is similar. Again, I'm an example of someone who said the Summerstage sound sucked and said so, but I didn't attend the basketball party so I couldn't have commented on that.
"Why do people question where the donation for summerstage is going too (oogah boogah those blacks is making off with our loot, you know how dishonest THEY are? Is it because they are black"
When I was in line, I remember wondering exactly how my donation was going to be used. I wanted to know if it was specifically set aside to support Summerstage events or was it used for the park in general or what. I actually never assumed that Shelter would get the donation. That wouldn't have made sense. Is it possible that others had similiar questions or is it only possible to assume that people focused on the race issue in your question? I'm black though and maybe the question you ask assumes that those who questions the donation process were white?
"Why so little words of praise for putting on an incredible 22 HOURS of events? Is it because they are black?"
Good question and i think 6 23 touched on it - that question of how much appreciation/praise is too little, enough, or too much. How is it quantified? I also wondered yesterday just how many people on DHP went to the party. I think there's an additional aspect. I wonder, if we simply counted the initial negative comments and the initial positive comments - in other words, we did not count the responses to the comments nor the responses to the responses - would the balance between positive and negative still be out of whack? I tend to think that this message board, like others, enjoys threads that are full of heated (often negative sounding) discussions, regardless of whether the thread is focusing on negative towards blacks, whites, gays, whatever. I also think that message boards have a way of making something seem much larger than it really is. I have to constantly remind myself that seeing 10 or 20 people (out of 3000) respond to a post is probably not a good sampling of popular opinion.
"Why dis Robbi who promotes to a minority crowd so that y'all have something to do yet say nothing about the scads of promoters who don't want your NIGGER and SPIC asses in their establishments? Is it because they are black?"
Implied in this question is the notion that people on the board are reluctant to speak out against racist promoters but they have no problem speaking out against Robbi, a black promoter? People on DHP are reluctant to speak out against racists??? That has not been my impression of DHP at all. From my perspective, Robbi said some off-the-cuff comment and got flamed for it. If a white promoter had said "fu** off", I have a feeling that promoter would've gotten flamed too, no? I'd like to know who these promoters are that you mention? Were there uneventful, short threads about these racist promoters in the past on this board?
After all that...(yeah, it's a slow day at work), I do understand the implications and hidden meanings in the questions and yes, I do agree that blacks often (way too often) get the short end of the stick - in terms of respect, praise, etc. But, your questions seemed almost too easily and too readily geared towards generalizing why, for the specific scenarios, people behave a certain way.
Maybe I could've just responded with "it depends" to each one?
my fingers hurt.

Maybe I could've just responded with "it depends" to each one?
my fingers hurt. so am i supposed to answer the questions of the questions with more questions (like this one)?

My short answer...Yes. You started this whole thing by asking tons of questions. It's only fair that you have to answer tons more. smile.gif
Less short answer...
sure, if you have the time and the desire. You of course know that you aren't required to answer anything, with answers or more questions.
I'm thinking that dialog usually involves more than just statements and answers, don't you think? To really have a conversation about a topic (and not just have people talking AT each other) don't you have to often ask questions?
Also...admittedly...I'm not a quick thinker and tend to see too many ways to answer broad questions. I need things to be more focused.
Feel free to ignore my whole post though.

Why does everything have to come down to race - how about a little respect for each other.
On the shelter thing: You better be glad you don't live in the UK DJ's don't turn up/turn up and don't play all the time and club enterance fees of £15-£20 is pretty normal. Get over it, its been and gone, move on with your lives and enjoy what you had and not what you think you might have enjoyed more if you could have had it.

There is no racial element to any of this. Like I said, I've seen hundreds of punks kick in speakers at a show because the headliner "couldn't make it across the border," which usually means too high/too drunk/too tired to play...

you have now pointed out the "white elephant" standing in the middle of the room!!
this is not much different than the incessant criticism aimed at black athletes, and the media's portrayal of them as overpaid and spoiled, despite the fact that they earn a fraction of what top corporate executives do, and contribute a whole lot more to the performance of their organizations.
it's a shame that race plays such a powerful role in BOTH the disproportionate complaints aimed in certain directions, as well as the often emotional and illogical rebuttals.
the question remains however, when will WE (u know who) get our acts together?? it's easy to ignore the unfair criticism, but i am still a bit pained by the actions that open the doors for this criticism...

On the real, Magus...my thesis really would be "it depends".
I know there are racial issues. I know that race permeates each and every aspect of our lives, and not in a healthy, productive way. I can bet also that most on DHP know this also. BUT, is race a mitigating factor in all of our behaviors, particularly in those situations you present via your questions? I don't think so. I think people are bit more complex then that. I think human behavior is much more complex than that. (at least I'm hoping it is because I do want to go back to school to study psychology and learn more about human behavior. It would be shame to go to every class and here the professor say "RACE! (as he scribbles the word on the chalkboard)...that's the issue...class dismissed!").
One of my thoughts is that you intentionally posed these questions to start a conversation (not just a thread of statements and counter-statements). Maybe that was an incorrect thought on my part? Maybe you simply came to the table with what you believe to be The Truth (I think you reference Truth in your sig) and wanted others to just agree with that Truth?
I think the issue with typing is a wide-spread issue on all messageboards or anywhere that requires electronic communication. We tend to want to type in short snippets and statements. Maybe that is one of the problems with this medium and that inability or lack of desire to type paragraphs ultimately hampers our ability to communicate well and have real dialog.

No its not because your black...Its because people don't know better...
But bashing people isn't going to make them learn anything.. In fact it makes you the less indicated person to try and educate anyone. Question is why haven't you learned that???

I think part of it is related to the proximity of the do-ers to the attenders and the lack of proximity between the do-ers and the shakers.
There are a LOT more people who went and had a great time, but they aren't on this board, they aren't online, they just showed up at the club and had a blast and went home. You never get to hear from them and its a shame. Like Timmy Richardson said... lets start a post about the great moments at the party and I bet it lasts 2 pages MAX.
White, rich HBO puts on some show @ Summer Stage and I make my donation but the whole thing sucks.
Who do I complain to ?
Its not like the president of HBO posts on here and its not like I've kidded myself into thinking he and I are tight because we read the same message boards.
Furthermore, even if someone DOES complain to HBO about this, you're just gonna get the brush off, maybe they'll pass you two free tickets for next years event (mind you, its free to begin with, but its an illusion that makes the common dolt feel better) and they'll move on.
Meanwhile, on here people think because Robbi posts here, and they post here, that they are deserving of a breakdown of everything that happens behind the scenes, when really, thats why those things happen behind the scenes.
Now, that being said... the whole thing could have been handled better on EVERYONE'S part, but thats why we all need a little love and understanding.
Peace
