After the amazing high of making my debut DJ'ing at Sankeys in Manchester, England on Friday night. I was out again helping a freind DJ at a bar on Canal st in Manchester city centre. The night had finished and we had all the equipment ready to go and were waiting for a taxi outside. My friend doesn't have technics decks so I took mine, something I've been doing pretty regular for the best part of 13 years now. I needed the toilet so I went, leaving my mate and one of his freinds outside with the gear.
I was only gone 3 or 4 mins.
When I returned I saw what I can only describe as my worst nightmare come true, there had been a fight and my records were all over the floor. Worse was the fact that one of my decks was also on the floor, upside-down with the platter on the other side of the street. I was in total shock at this and all I could think of was picking up the deck and putting it back together. There were bouncers from the surrounding bars all over the place and the two guys who were involved were on the other side of the street.
I shouted "Where's my other f'ing deck!"
"Six foot under the canal", was the reply I heard. You see Canal st is just that, a street with a canal running along side. During this fight, which could of only lasted a couple of mins, my other deck was thrown into the canal!
Next thing I now I'm back inside with a policeman in front of me taking a statement. More police were outside taking statements from the others. Then they let them go! I went absolutley mad at this copper, telling him nothing would get done about it, they'd probably given false details and we'd never see them again. I told him the statements he'd taken wern't worth the paper they were wrote on and I was the best part of a £1000 down on the night.
I could tell by his face that he thought I was right, but told me that they wanted to press charges against one of my friends because apparantly he threw the first punch. He claims self defence but I don't want to get into that one, there's no happy ending if I start to blame him, even if he did start the fight the other guy must take the blame for recking my decks.
The police told me that cctv is all over that part of the city and if I wanted to press charges that would help, I am pressing charges, and I hope that he did give the right details cause he's done for if he did. I'll see him in court or in hell.
Most of my records are ok, though some are missing, only about 10 but I'm not sure which ones yet. This is the only saving grace because if they'd gone in the canal aswell I couldn't of replaced most of them.
Like I said I've had them 13 years and took them out gigging thousands of times, never any trouble and now this, gone in a matter if moments, the worst bit is that I wasn't there to stop it.
I cannot begin to tell you how gutted I am.
