Okay, so here's a newbie's report on DEMF/Movement:
Basically, I had a freakin ball breaking my DEMF/Movement cherry! Got a chance to meet so many DHP heads, including Ultra ( graemlins/remybussi.gif ), Ms. Rickey X ( graemlins/remybussi.gif ), Al Boogie, Shalewa (that girl can DANCE!), Ron Paizley, Princess Tam-Tam, Glenn Underground, Craig Alexander and Red D. All yall were cooler than a fan.
The performances by Liquid Liquid, ESG and Peven Everette were sublime. I dug Boo Williams @ Agave as well. But, the highlight of the weekend for me was the way Craig Alexander and Glenn Underground BEAT THAT ISHT INTO THE MIGGIN FRIGGIN GROUND on Sunday night!!!!!!!!!! I danced my azz off in a way I haven't in years...I got some isht off my soul's figurative chest (that's the best way to explain it).
I even got my picture taken by the Detroit News (okay, yeah, I'm geeky)...here's me getting me groove on on Friday night:
http://detnews.com/pix/galleries/2003/movement/09.jpg
Now, the only bummer is that I brought back a nasty throat/ear/nose thing, but I'm resting up to ensure that I'm ready to party my azz off for the rest of the summer!
@Ms. Rickey: Please post your pix here when you return, okay????

Ok the festival was off the hook. I went Sunday and Boo Williams, B Smoove (I think), and another guy who was white was beating it all day. It was like a big ass party. Folks were pop-locking, doing the Detroit Slide. Then the Urban Heirs tore it up Sunday night. Craig, Glenn, Wes and Matt beat it pure Chicago style.
Nice meeting Rickey X, Discogooddess, Girlfriday, Gene King, Brett Dancer, and the staff at the Camilan Cafe'. Nice seeing you again Ultra and Agent Double A, Shalewa and Ed Reynolds.

And thanks for the compliment! smile.gif

Wow...
My Movement/DEMF experience was powerful. I come away with a new sense of the power of community and the dangers inherent in the coopting of communities into scenes and a renewed committment to advancing the TRUTH about who made what (even as I struggle to know what that TRUTH is...).
At the festival proper I was really impressed by the outstanding curatorial effort on the part of the organizers. They presented a dynamic mix of live performances and DJ sets that articulated the breadth and depth of both the roots and branches of Underground Dance Music. It was particularly powerful for me to see sisters representing all over the place since to hear it told (and to look at the images that get attached to this culture...) we weren't there then and aren't here now. Let me make it plain, that sister who you think is too caught up in the everyday drama of living, too mainstream or round the way, too big for seven jeans, too out of the loop to be really down...well she is the MOTHER OF THIS. Let me tell you women like ESG hail.gif hail.gif hail.gif hail.gif , like Stacey Hale, like Carolyn Punter, like Korie, like ALL the sisters from DHP who snuck up on each other in Detroit ;) made the weekend exceptional for me not only by rocking the house wherever I encountered them but by simply being beautiful, dynamic and present where I always hear we aren't supposed to be. The lowest moments came when I witnessed other attendees behaving in ways that underscored why I have such grave reservations about the expansion and coopting of what is for me an edyfiying community of common interest into a mass-cultural scene. In particular I found the way that the facillities staff was treated by many of the people in attendance highly objectionable and thick with racist and classist overtones. I also had several strange encounters with folks feeling like they were within their rights to impose on my dancing space in ways that went way past simple bad dance floor etiquette. To paraphrase Paradigm we were not all dancing to the same beat...
At the after parties I caught(didn't catch them all by a long stretch) I DANCED AND DANCED AND DANCED!!!!! SBSI was so constantly off the meter it will need to be recalibrated. I mean no offense to the folks here at home but the people who I heard in Detroit had me dancing to hard stuff, spacey stuff, techy stuff, old stuff, new stuff,everything... it just isn't that hard for a competent DJ to get me on the floor and for a good DJ to keep me there and for a great DJ to turn me out. I especially enjoyed the music laid down by Mike Clark, Shadrach, Boo Williams, Brett Dancer, Ray Prasad, Gene King, JoJo Flores and the whole Urban Heirs family (the best road dogs a girl could have ;) ) : Wes Cage, Matt Hughes, Craig Alexander and GU.
Shouts also to Edd Reynolds and Dannyboy (DJs who dance and are nice people to boot!), El, Jozana, Cordell (I wish we had gotten a minute to continue that convo...) Ron Paizley and Al Boogie whose psychic love connection is astonishing in its ability to overcome the separations brought by large crouds and loud music and lead them back to each other every time and to all the DHP women who managed to forget to mention that they would be in Detroit (I'm guilty too) Princess Tam Tam, GirlFriday, DiscoGoddess, Cynti and those who said they would be there and opened their room up to a weary sister who needed to sit down Ultra and Rickey X. It was a joy and a pleasure to meet new people and actually get to chat with old aquaintances a little bit more.
