What M Davis , J Coltrane, Vangelis songs do you use in the mix? Are they for the middle of the mix, when people are dancing or at the beginning and ends, when they are not ?
What other "not obvious" choices do you use?
I'm thinking of what FK said was the moment of that night in Japan for him. A M Davis cut played at peak hour. I'm guessing that track was a relatively low-energy track, by vitue of it being Mr. Cool. But he made it fly. (or i could be wrong)

i've played Vangelis's "Abraham's Theme" from the Chariots soundtrack out a few times..nice soothing tune to start or end the set

Hello Chris,
I've never played Coltrane or Miles at a gig. I did play a Vangelis track called Let It Happen which is a very deep spiritual joint. Ideal for warming up etc-early !.
I heard a really nice Timmy mix of DHP where he finishes with A Love Supreme , ther was a really nice transition in this mix.
Also I heard Bobby Hutcherson - NTU from the Linger Lane Lp played by Herb Martin and Timmy amazing track indeed, and watching the dancers do their thing to that was amazing !.
Peace Alex. ;)

(or i could be wrong) Regarding the particular moment you talked about, peak hours also need cool-down moments (IMHO), and this was exactly that, where I felt the need to bring it back waaaay down for a second, in the middle of the party. Then again, that's what the 'Deep Space' vibe is also based on, rather than very long stretches of similar energy for hours at a time.
tension <> release
peaks <> valleys
..contrast makes colors seem brighter. ;)

P.S.: if you don't try it, how will you know if it can work?

Tell me something. Has anyone used "Love Supreme" (Part I) in any mixes?
It sounds like it's perfect with a four-on-the floor beat.
Or does Alice (widow) not allow any use of JC's music. Rembember, Spike was not allowed to name his movie "Love Supreme". He had to go with Mo Better Blues. Peace.

M Davis , J Coltrane, Vangelis You can't go wrong with musicians like these. The list of stuff that can be played is practically infinite.
For Miles, there are choice cuts from the "Bitches Brew" 2xLP, "Calypso Frelimo" (He Loved Him Madly), Some really cool bits from "Yesternow" (Jack Johnson), aslo "Backseat Betty" and more (The Man With The Horn), and this mad trumpet acapella bit on the hip-hop jam he did in the 90's. (forgot the name, I have it on my efx CD) Bill Laswell recently did a remix of a bunch of Miles' things which came out about 3 years ago, some of which are pretty good to play.
Lots again from Coltrane, but somewhat harder to dance, except bits on "A Love Supreme". I personally rate "Kulu Sé Mama" as one of my all-time faves. (It's in 6/8) Mc Coy Tyner also delivers the goods on some of his solo albums, which immediately would take me to the whole CTI catalog, with Ron Carter, Billy Cobham, Don Sebesky, Hubert Laws, Bob James,...
Then you get into you garden-variety Pharoah Sanders (http://members.aol.com/ishorst/love/discsand.html), with many utterly beautiful gems, ("The Creator Has A MasterCard" :D --priceless--LOL), mix well with some Sun Ra, add some Archie Shepp after it starts getting thick, and don't forget to sprinkle a bit of Art Ensemble Of Chicago right before serving.
All joking aside, Pharoah's "Thembi" album has so many inspired and cosmic moments, it's again in my all-time Top xx. (Rhodes: Lonnie Liston Smith)
The Vangelis catalog is so big, hard to suggest what to begin with, besides the obvious "Blade Runner" theme, or a couple of things from "Antartica".
Have to stop now; this could get out of hand.
Note: purposely leaving some titles off, so you can still listen for yourself and pick the bits you like, rather than getting it all pre-chewed... ;)
hahaha @ Creator Has a Mastercard

I gotcha FK! ;)
Wow! So much!
I have the movie Antartica. Picked it up at the grocery store in indiana for $5. GREAT soundtrack! I'll be looking into this.
(there's also the chance that I can actually afford these records too, right now. I like that.)

FK- on a single-minded quest to bring peaks and valleys back into the mix.
Mandrill down here in DC complains about the same thing. Guess that's what happens when you start out playing lush disco songs with full arrangements of all varieties back in the 70s and then have to play tracks with paired down isntrumentation and a deconstructed structure all at 123 BPM and energy level 11 for the past 10 years or so.
I can understand the generation gap, and I salute you all in your quest to bridge it! This should only make things more interesting - more variety - for me as dancer, as DJ , etc.

proof of a great recording is one that you can give to someone and know they will get a lot of enjoyment and pleasure from buggin out to it, listening, chilling, dancing or whatever... just as much as you have over the years as was proved today when I bought yet another copy of "In A Silent Way" as a birthday present for a dear friend... TIMELESS
ps: IIBS is RUFF tune from the "underdog"

I forgot "Naima" John Coltrane, and all the Mahavishnu Orchestra stuff , a few of which is actually playable, which makes me think of the great Ahmad Jamal (http://www.ahmadjamal.info/) (hi David!), and from there going back to more ECM records stuff, like Egberto Gismonti's "Dança Da Cabeças" (http://www.ecmrecords.com/ecm/recordings/1089.html) and going back to my main man Dizzy Gillespie, who foresaw the Afro-Cuban jazz connection 25 years before anyone else, pardon me Mr Art Blakey, I forgot your magnificent "African Suite", (and all of the rest of that stuff), not to get the great Max Roach upset by not quoting some of his eminently fabulous recordings....Dexter Gordon, Duke, (yes, Duke has some danceable stuff, ever heard the story about the 30 minute sax solo at the Newport Jazz Festival?!...), Wayne Shorter's Brazilian album, Heath Brothers, ever listened to the 'Modern Jazz Quartet' when Kenny Clarke was playing the traps? Wait, "Oh Sohno" by Airto and Flora Purim, Return To Forever's first few albums, and Stanley Clarke on his own, Lenny White's fabulous 'Venusian Summer' solo album with Doug Rauch on bass, not to slight Billy Cobham on his monster first solo LP. (Massive Attack certainly took notice!)
How far do we want to go? Popol Vuh, Matching Mole, Brian Eno & John Hassell, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Amon Dull II (You know, the one Larry used to play?...), Silver Apples, Terry Riley, Wendy Carlos, Soft Machine, Kalus Schulze, Tangerine Dream, Miriam Makeba, Omou Sangare, Ashra Temple (Manuel Gottshing's old group), Chief Enbenezer Obey, Okey Temiz, Doug Carn, Can, Holger Czukay,.....
Yea! :D

There are still a dozen jammies that I've been trying to identify that I heard at the G and never since.
Also, what was that BIG sounding BRAZILIAN Pop/Dance masterpiece
that Larry used to play in the final two years
after the first Brazilian Vacation for the Loft Staff around 85? He played it on and off till the
end, but I don't remember hearing it on the last Garage weekend.
Thanks!
Your musical student forever,

Thanks for the tip...I found this on amazon:
Does it look like a legit re-issue to you?

I refuse to pay $18 plus shipping for a CD that's not LEGIT, if you know what I mean.

I refuse to pay $18 plus shipping for a CD that's not LEGIT, if you know what I mean.It appears OK, the album title is correct, and I would be very surprised to learn that Amazon sells things that are not 'legit'.
Anyway, it seems as you are willing to take the chance of buying this item, and possibly get handsomely rewarded.
The 'Zen Approach™' would be to say that the important thing is the act of buying, and that the result is not as important as the action itself. (as if when playing a game, the playing itself is far more important than the winning or losing aspect) I will leave the wisdom of this for others to debate, as it seems unlikely you would agree to it in this particular case.
However, may I humbly suggest that there are probably a fair sprinkling of analog copies of this still floating around in second-hand rock stores, as no one has ever heard of the thing until today.
In pursuing it this way, as noted before, the act of buying may be far more pleasurable than a simple electronic transaction. graemlins/rofl.gif
(Disclaimer: Your mileage may vary; may depend on store owner's personal hygiene habits) ;)

Vangelis - Let It Happen is excellent and beautiful.
Also...
Dervish D - which is on one of my mixes on the Unheardhousedjs site...great track.
Also...
The Bounty (Opening)
The Bounty (Closing Titles) - these tracks can only be found on one best of LP...the Bounty Soundtrack has never been released...sadly.
The Bladerunner Soundtrack was only released on Brazilian LP!!! BUT, there is a British 12" I have with 4 of the best cuts from the soundtrack on it - Blush Response, Closing Titles, Love's Theme and mostly importantly, the beautiful Rachel's Song.
One more very nice Vangelis track is Chung Kuo.
