View Full Version : RIAA putting an end to Mix CDs???
jared

A few weeks ago I went to Gramaphone records and noticed they got rid of there promo Mix CDs, they still had all the major label stuff but none of promo stuff they always had in the past. an employee told me that the RIAA had busted someone else in town and told them to turn over there mix CDs or else they would take them to jail and then take their mix CDs (2 great options, huh?) Anyways to avoid any problems like this Gramaphone decided to just get rid of all there mix cds. I can understand this to a point like when a DJ takes the newest 50 cent album and mixes and then sells it as a DJ mix for half the price of the original album but what does this mean for underground artists who use these mix CDs as outlets for their music? Also what does this mean for places like this website who have these DJ mixes available for download? I am sure many of the mixes on this website include many major label tracks. How long will it be before the RIAA starts looking at websites just like this one? I am just curious to find out everyones thoughts on this.

The bitterness against the RIAA, major media and their artists is certain to hurt sales more than downloading. I'm just waiting for someone to actually hurt one of these people.
Folks are crazy about their music.

I think the audio archives on this site should
only be accessible to "members" of the DHP board.

The RIAA busted the owner of Just Dance Records and confiscated his duplication equipment (cd, tape and rumored vinyl press, etc.)..... The shops were closed. His mall kiosks were closed. That was a nasty bust. The more recent bust was at the Clark Street Mall in Rogers Park. That's probably the one that prompted Grammophone's move...

Ed White, have you been contacted concerning your mixed CDs or website?

Keith, something for you to consider:
No one can give you a hard time for providing LINKS to another web site, and it is easy enough to host the files on a server based overseas (not subject to same laws and regulations as the US), for example the Netherlands is particularly good for this. You open an account there, FTP the files to that server, and just have a link to the files on your site. This is a very inexpensive solution, (around $10/month, if that) and you can ask people visiting your site to contribute towards defraying those costs with a Paypal donation button.
As far as I understand it, you cannot get sued for having links to other sites or files on your web page. biggrinangel.gif
Well, just a thought.

14 months ago I got busted. They took all my disc, DHP T-Shirts & Jackets, equiptment, the whole 9. The main trif was over a house remix of "He Love Me" by Jill Scott. Two weeks after I got off probation I left Chicago for good, that was 6 weeks ago.
I'll come back to visit every now & again but, not to live.

I cannot believe what the industry is doing, this is so unfair. What we need to do is make file sharing totally anonymous, so they really cannot trace it. As for mix CD's, why now are people getting busted, when mixtapes have been around since the 70's (or earlier). It makes me want to cry. graemlins/cussing.gif

Oh yeah, hang on now - don't mix CD's (by anyone) actually promote the product? Do the companies not send free promo's to DJ's/Radio stations, so that people hear their product for free, and then go and buy the damn product? C'mon!

It would have been great if the demo I sent had been taken seriously instead of bootleged by someone within their own organization.
