View Full Version : WHY DOES YOUR MOM HAVE A PENIS?
Bill Blake
06-11-2003, 08:58 AM
I was watching Sex In The City and one of the girls wanted a baby but couldn’t have one, her husband who didn’t want a baby thinking as a joke, to lighten things up since the bad news had cause a lot of problems in their relationship brought home a cardboard cut out of a baby to give to his wife as ‘their’ baby since they couldn’t have one.
This joke, was the last straw that ended up finalizing the divorce stage (and yes I watch Sex In The City, and I also read US magazine so SHUT UP!).
And it got me to thinking about this thread. Humor that for the most part requires an upfront initial response to work, is very subjective in a way.
Take for instance that commercial that Jerry Sienfeld did for American Express where he goes to England to do stand up and none of his jokes are hitting. Why because a good deal of the punch lines require a colloquial understanding of American popular phrases that the English aren’t likely to be familiar with.
No of course we can analyze our responses to jokes, why did we or didn’t we laugh and figure out what motivates us to laugh or not but it really isn’t anyone’s business to argue that people are crazy for having a negative response to this ‘Mexican’ joke when those that were offended understand why they were and even after analyzing why, decide that their response is a valid one for them.
The real question you have to ask yourself is why or why you didn’t find the joke the funny and if that reason for either finding it funny, or offensive or just plain bad is a valid one.
There are reasons it may be funny (the word pun, but honestly I thought the joke, just in that regard alone was not really that funny) but given some of general experiences of Mexicans regarding their heritage and their overall status, and the way other cultures see them may outweigh whatever was ‘funny’ about the word pun, making the joke, to many who are either Mexican, or familiar with their plight not so damn funny.

no comment on the sex and the city...
Not to keep dragging this out but you did post so...I would still put forth the proposition that this joke was received so badly not for what it was specifically making fun of (a play on words) but for the history of awful racist stereotype jokes that it awakened in people's minds (despite the fact that, on its own merits, this particular bad joke was, IMO, not one of those racist jokes). Sort of guilty by association. I don't mean to discount or demean that association, either. People have emotional responses to things and often with good reason. People can also see the bigger context at work and judge something in that light. I can see the bigger picture at work here, but it still doesn't really change my mind about that particular joke.
the fact that the discussion deteriorated in to a lot of name calling and accusation is another story...

God Im gay </font>[/QUOTE]While I don't think that the joke needed the typical DHP 10+ thread intellectual breakdown from every possible ****ing angle, I understand on both counts (in particular the baby episode 'cause of personal experience), I just have a thick skin and a sick sense of humor.
I wasn't the best joke ever told, but I thought it was worth a small snicker, and move on to the next topic.

And hahahahah @ all of the macho men who say they don't watch Sex in the City. Bullshit.
4 chicks who like to bang= quality programming
I believe the fact that a person can never have a baby is a little difficult to joke about especially since there is nothing that they can ever do to change it. Its like you making fun of someone with downs syndrome or is artistic…
Now the fact that I as a person of another county have an accent is something that every person that immigrates will have & its nothing to be ashamed of… It’s just the natural process of things… When I first came to this country from Dominican Republic, I had an accent when I spoke English big deal… Nothing to be ashamed of. That’s why I found the joke just silly…
I make fun of Chinese, Spanish (Argentinean, Dominican, Puerto Rican, Salvadorians, Cubans etc.)British accents...
Just because I do that doesn’t mean I think you are less of a person… Never did I approach or looked at the joke as Mexicans being less than I,

For the record too....
There are people that are just like 'Yea I know the Mexicans got it bad, shit I am Mexican, but I thought it was funny for the little word play cause Im a dork' too....
Nothing wrong with that really either.....
Its just that for some people that are like 'yea I hate those ****ign tomato pickers oh yea what to Mexicans have under the carpet types' can ruin the fun for us all.
Really not all that complicated....we should lighten and go have a taco or something.

And that is not even considering the relationship between reciever and giver of the joke which is a HUGE philosphical consideration that has plagues writers for years.

Speaking of how women think, and Sex AND the city
Initially the three friends were saposta be different traits, physiological drives, character aspects of the main one. (Cant think of the right word) Basically, what goes on in the main characters head and her being the centered balance of what is taking place between the other three.
This still goes on in the show but what I like about (and trust me there is some cheese and a few things I don’t like about it) the show is how well developed the writers did make the characters.
