i am going to make trainwreck mixes in style.
At least he puts his edits out. A number of people are dying to get Ron Hardy edits which were never put out. If you don't like them, good for you.
No what really ticks me off is the quality of some of his pressings on SS... the last one just skips all over the place, seems like the bass are very high too. Does he do THIS on purpose?

If that's the case,I'll forgo SoundForge, pull out the old edit tape deck,do some sloppy edits and call them Ron's edits.....

Surely ;) are some of Theo's edits sloppy and bad sounding and people are buying it, becasue of his nme on it, but hey, if you want Made In The USA "Never Let You Go" badly, you will grab it, although I prefer the Black Cock edit (I just say that to earn some respect from the nerds)...
And that Amp Fiddler edit is really nice.

Theo for me plays some nice stuff but his DJ style is really annoying. He always turns down the bass channel on the mixer and then turns down the midrange then lets the high just sizzle for a while before bringing the bass back in etc. This can sound effective if used sparingly but Theo just kills it for me. I can tell any theo mix because of this overused technique. Does this annoy anyone else?

I know some people who don't like it, but I dig it, he usually juices the song real well, he doesn't play with the knobs just to play with the knobs. What annoys me is when he loses control of the volume and shit sounds distorted a la Claussell. Two great djs, both have the same problem though.

I think this EQing technique is appreciated more in a live situation, it gets lost when recorded. I heard 3 chairs play in Sheffield, UK and it sounded amazing. Moodymann had his mask on, don't know what that was all about!
As for the Ugly edits, they were not meant for general release but his 'friends' bootlegged them. I think they work as dubs and I love the Dells cut up. Yes he is only cutting out a couple of bars and looping them but its only what half the Hip Hop producers are doing.
The production is ruff soundin, but so is the sound signature stuff and it is part of the attraction. Theo's records sell like hot cakes because they are different and he obviously goes to great lengths to source his sounds and create amazing music. So why shouldn't he dabble with a few edits in his spare time!

In regards to Theo's mixing style:
Here is a 'not-so-secret' Detroit secret... Theo is a Ron Hardy disciple. He emulates the man every way that he can. Theo has most every Ron Hardy mix he can get his hands on. Hearing him live is much better than focusing on the overworked EQs in a recording. Same goes for Mr. Claussell...
...in the same breath, I would still rate those two in my top 10 DJs of the world.

That is indeed no secret. At least, if you have ever heard a Ron Hardy mix here on DHP. Theo features a lot of tracks and songs, Hardy used to champion.
And yes, Theo is definitely one of the few extraordinary djs that travel this world. If he is on, he is on!
