Oprah Seeking More Acreage in Hawaii
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Filed at 2:07 p.m. ET
KULA, Hawaii (AP) -- Oprah Winfrey, already the owner of 100 shorefront acres in Hana, reportedly is shopping for more Maui real estate.
Winfrey and Bob Greene, her friend and former personal trainer, have made offers on several properties in Kula, the Maui News reported Wednesday.
According to the paper, the maven at the helm of a multimillion-dollar media conglomerate has had some bids accepted and others turned down.
One sale reportedly underway is of the 31-acre Thompson Ranch. Jerry Thompson, whose father started the ranch in 1901, said Tuesday he ``had mixed feelings'' about the sale.
Down the road, Carmen Goble of Goble's Flower Farm said she told Winfrey's agents, ``No way!'' when they inquired about buying her property. ``We are not selling,'' Goble said.
The Maui News says other neighbors are also selling their property or in serious negotiations.
Winfrey's agent on Maui had no comment.

I have always wondered who Oprah has used as her mentors with regard to business and how to build her empire.

Leslie is right about the financial reasons, but in Hawaii there is also an EXTREMELY strong locals vibe. People who have been there for a long time, especially Polynesians, often refuse to sell to mainlanders on principle. Much of the islands has already been bought up by outsiders, so the locals are very defensive.

If Oprah bought up most of the land
and gave some back to the (real) Hawaiian people.
Ooooooooh, that would just be too much
for words.
Just buy up the land that was stolen from them
and give it back.
Now --- that's the Angel Network in action.

which island are you from?
Oahu. The most touristy (is that a word?) one. The one with Waikiki. My next door neighbor produced "Hawaii 5-O" and "Magnum P.I.". I personally didn't have a problem with all the tourists b/c I learned at a very young age the importance of them with the Hawaii economy. But I did know a few kids in high school that weren't so welcoming of their presence. I'm not even going to tell you what they would do. It's saddens me to even think about it.

Surfers are very territorial. Don't bring a body board out to their beaches. You gonna get a surf board thrown at you. And if you're catching a wave and notice that somebody else is on it, do yourself a favor and pull back.

I'm not a surfer. I used to body board (mach 10 and a pair of churchills), but obviously living in Hawaii I had alot of friends that did. Not really a gang thing. It was more about respect.

Oprah has alot of loot but, she don't have the simplest thing most women have, a child. She has not (and at her age now) can not naturally bring life via a new bundle of joy.
Public exposure is her lover and the money that goes with it. I would love to be well off but...what is the use of having the world at you fingertip and no seed of your own to share it with.
When you got money / fame - you got alot of people around you. When you're down & out, your true friends are by your side.
Let's be realistic here:
honest (emphasis on the word HONEST) tears fell from the public when AALIYAH, Tupac & Biggie died. Who is gonna morn publicly for Oprah? Gayle and a few others, and who many honest tears will fall?
I have never see a person who life mirrors so many other in my life. When sexual molestation was the big news issue she came forward stating she was molested as a child.
I am suprized that she never came out with some cock & bull story about being molested by a mentor, famous singer, ball player or government official (since that has been the new trend in the news of late).
I saw a show she did about depression & suscide (s/p)...that is the one show that I wish I could have been on and had the mic. I would had told her "Poor people do not have the luxury to sit around depressed - we too busy trying to earn more to do more for ourself & our children" "Since you're not a parent, you don't know jack about that first hand" I would have quoted Chris Rock also "Rich kids kill themself - poor kids kill eachother"
OK I am off my soapbox

Phew, I'm so confused. I'm not sure if I love to hate Oprah or hate to love her.
Even though I've got absolutely NOTHING in common with her cult-like target audience, I do know that I've come full circle with Ms. Winfrey. She got's the best brand in showbiz. Whenever I find it, I'm going to embrace my inner-Oprah. She's convinced me I've got one.
A few years ago, I learned to never ever EVER say a bad thing about her publicly (no matter how appropriate). It seems everytime I've made a negative comment about her to a friend or acquiantance, I was immediately met with a steely-eyed look that suggested I just called their mama a hoe. Actually, "yo mama's a hoe" would probably be less objectionable to Oprah-philes.
She won me over with "I'zz married, I'zz married, y'all". And who can forget Forseyth County?
Then she lost me with Remembering Your Spirit, the endless tearful monologues and shocking confessions, Dr. Phil, the smaltzy segments, "What do you know for sure", and that goddamn,low-down, devil-ass muthafukka Rudy Giuliani.....TWICE!(????)!!
But Sis can put an audience in trance, make them cough up 4 bucks for O magazine and walk them off a clift if she wanted. Sure, I tend to think she wouldn't be on my side but, shit, I've forced myself to love her anyway. Everybody else is doing it. And besides....that black woman's GOT GAME! graemlins/acclaim.gif

Did it ever occur to you that if she was a mother she might not be as successful as she is? Men have no idea how much women give up (of their own free will) when they decide to have children. I am also pretty appalled at your tone as it Oprah doesn't deserve all that she's worked hard for.

She is almost personally saved 3 Black colleges.. she has more PERSONAL Philanthropic efforts than most companies.. All this and guess what? She wasn't BORN into loot.. she is a self made woman. I give her her props. She learned how to play the game.. she played it well.. and she WON the game.. hail.gif

The blind leading the blind is about it. If you are into comedy, namely Chris Rock, I posted a quote from him - that is just like what Oprah does - quote without living it from the inside out.
As for you & the sexism bit, I am far from that kind of person. I don't know if you have children but, we on DHP with children will agree that - parenthood is a wonderful thing - stressful at times (but so is being horney) but well worth while.
You take my post as praise / teardown - I am just stating the facts. If I had a monthly DJ magazine but my face is the only one on the cover, I would be found guilty of shameless self promotion.
VIP's at her show think that they are sitting in a random seat - that is a trick too. These people are places in certin seats and the camera crew is instructed to get "Close Up" shots of said people.
This I know for fact because I have a relative that is in the professional sports field...and when we sat at the Oprah Show - there were zoom in shots taken and once the show was over, all the VIP's and their guest were escorted to a different room from the general audience members to socialize. That is 1st hand info from a me and not some second hand information.
I try as best I can to speak on what I know / seen / did for myself and not use 2nd / 3rd/ 4th hand info to make a point smile.gif

Leonard if those are your reasons for hating her so much then so be it - it all sounds really childish and frankly this whole thread was started with respect to her accomplishments and what she is looking to further accomplish and not her show or not her having children (which why this is such a majopr issue for you is STILL beyond me). Furthermore, please point out where I stated that having kids was a bad thing - your post implied that whether you think so or not.
Finally, your comments as first hand truthful as you may think they are are just your perceptuons of what went on during one day of taping of a television show - clearly you did not honestly think that shows actually allow the audiences to "shake hands" with the celebrity guests after the show is finished taping. Hello?
If you and Chris Rock want to hate on Oprah and how deep her pockets are or aren't that's your bizness (why you comapred her to Bill Gates is once again beyond me) - but understand that as a BLACK WOMAN I am proud that she has accomplished all she has and continues to move forward in a positive way. Frankly I think no less of her as a woman that she does not have children. The fact that you would choose to point that out as the first issue you attack her on states more about you than Oprah.
Damnit if there can't be ONE ****ING positive post on this page out side of Happy Birthday (no offense to folks who's birthdays are today)!

1. We both have opions.
2. I directed nothing at you first (read what you posted) - youre the one calling the male / my opion sexist.
Then you post the old - Proud Black Woman crap graemlins/puke.gif
When all else fails, too many Black people start playing the race or gender card. I guess it's the new Black thing to do instead of a good defense when a person opion does not match someone else. graemlins/conf44.gif
DHP is a 1st Amendment page viewed world wide!
DHP Unwritten rule #1. Don't post a follow up to anyone post unless you are fully prepaired to read what they come back with (be it good or bad)
Good feedback is great but bad feedback....oh hell, in lay terms "if you can't play with the big dog's, stay under the porch"
I don't play the Race / Gender or Sexual Orentation card as a defense. Male / Female / Gay / Bi / Straight - I call it like I see it, post what comes to mind - and give the least bit of damn who don't like it.
Don't think I came here to pick a fight with you online. I do defend my opion whenever anyone attempt to make my opion look remotely Racist / Sexist, or any other kind of (IST) that is a bad (IST)

of all the negative things in this world going on, why hate on Oprah? If she's sometimes off the mark, that's because she's human. If she wanted kids, she certainly could have had them - if she chose not to, who's to say why other than her?
Hate on Bush, hate on Hussein, hate on Mugabe or Cheney - they've done shit worthy of contempt. Oprah ... well, what's she really done but build an empire from scratch, provided a strong role model, given millions to charity, and helped a lot of people, including me, to evolve as human beings.
