99 records is one of my fave labels
which 99 records stuff was re-released?
I have the liquid liquid comp on grand royal
and the ESG re-issues on Soul Jazz/Universal Sound..
is there more?
it actually increases the value.

typically selfish collector complaint.
music is to be listened to not
admired from afar for it's collectabiliy.
if the albums are out of print this means less
exposure for the artists.
without the exposure there are no sales, witout sales these artists slip into obscurity and are dropped by their labels, which puts a halt on them releasing future albums.
if you were in band wouldn't you want as many people as possible exposed to your music?, and wouldn't you want the financial backing from your label so you can continue releasing new music?
or if you run your own label wouldn't you want your releases to sell so you can keep the label alive?
reisssues are definitely a positive thing.
plus if you are collector you can still go out and find the original pressings and pay collector prices for a record which will most likely not sound nearly as good as the reissue.

So prices soar...

I only get mad at some re-issues because i think of all the hard work i did digging in shit piles of records to discover a song no one is playing, and it get released for any sucka to buy.
But the good definately outweighs the bad, i've learned about stuff the same way.
and i agree music is made for listening, enjoying, and sharing.

Hey Mercado ... I believe all the Liquid Liquid and ESG stuff was repressed. Not sure about any other artists on their roster.
As an occasional seller on eBay, I still say represses lower the value of the originals UNLESS the original pressing is better, it contained an extra track not found on the repress, or the original version is different from the repress. I think it was the 'Fantasy Girl' track by Pierres Pfantasy Club that was repressed on some dingy label, and the version was edited. Not good!!

off topic but buyers beware of cheaply priced cd re-issues of really old obscure records. example old reggae or jazz double cd re-issues for 10 bucks. a lot of these packages are remastered from old 45 rpm records, NOT the master tapes. you can actually hear pops from the record.

'Brighter Days' is indeed a available on a U.S. pressed boot which includes MD xpress ' God Made Me Funky' on the flip.
As for re-issues lowering the value of records, I'm 100% with Akila on this one.

As a fair to middlingly hardcore collector it winds me up too, but only when its naff bootleg copies of rarities, like the crap 99 reissues. Soul Jazz and Grand Royal/MoWax did it properly, paid the artists, mastered the music nicely and in short took a bit of care: bit diff from just copying some head's crackly copy of Dig We Must and photocopying the artwork.
I like to have the original at home cos I'm a sad bastard, but I'll play the best, loudest version out: the recent (legal) UK repress of God Made Me Phunky is about 10 times louder than the original!
Unless of course I'm on the same bill as Jolyon (respect for that Hollies 12" at Low Life, I hadn't forgotten!)in which case it'll be originals all the way because you've got to make an effort sometimes don't you?

Sorry, but I'm all about being able to now buy records I missed the first time around or records that just never came through my neck of the woods in the first place.
Just my $.02.

Some bootlegs are OK - where else you going to find Sister Love 'Gimme Your Love' running at 9 minutes long smile.gif
That Benelux bootleg is good too - nice loud pressing (but inferior edit) of Nightmoves - Trancedance.
There's a label called S12 over here that has released loads of stuff that never came out on 12" too. e.g. Son Of Shaft. It's all legit too, properly licensed.

ok people are confusing bootlegs with reissues.
reissues are legit, coming from real labels.
bootlegs are illegal

Might be wrong but the version on Benelux is different to another version I've heard, which keeps the baseline going all the way through.

And you don't think those Parliament-Funkadelic albums are valuable, with that slammin' Pedro Bell artwork? The CD's just don't do that artwork any justice.
However, I do have albums that I would hope would reissue on CD:
1) Slave: Showtime (1981). Their last great album.
2) Roberta Flack: Bustin' Loose Soundtrack (1979).
Bassman Marcus Miller gets funky on "Lovin' You" (Such An Easy Thing To Do).
3) Natalie Cole: Inseperable (1974). Not only is it on Capitol, but a Grammy winner, but still not on CD. graemlins/jpshakehead.gif
Album I have finally out on CD:
1) Echoes Of An Era (Chaka Kahn, Lenny White, Chick Corea, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, and Stanley Clarke)

The vinyl reissues of all the Parliament stuff are awful. Got to get the originals for the pop ups and comic books. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
One thing I'd love to see on CD is Mary Lou Williams' "Black Christ Of The Andes". I paid over 50 quid for both original and MPS reissue (with the wicked, wicked sleeve), would definitely shell out again for a CD and, despite being such a sucker, I'd tell all my friends to buy one too. Fantastic album.

Out of all the original Parliament albums I have, only the P-Funk Earth Tour had the original poster in it. But to expound on a previous point, re-issues increase the value of the originals also because it decreases the chances of the average comsumer looking for the original. Once the re-issues come out, usually only the collectors still seek the originals.
Example: When I was in London, I found Pam Todd's original "Baise Moi" album. A few months later the re-issues came out at Dusty Groove. Rick Wojcik (DustyGroove's part owner) said that the original doubled in price once the re-issues came out because of the reason I stated earlier along with the obscurity factor. The record was already worth $35, now it's going for no less than $70 on the street.
