Congrats ! that's agreat record indeed. the double stevie album is great too; cuz it has 'do i do' and runs through all of his albums until 'hotter than july', with some extra tracks. my pick of the day is that 'one way' record. i love those kind of 80's club sounds.

hey lyot, if you're looking for more stuff like cerrone and such you should tell me. i come across those albums 100's of times. cerrone 3 is the one with 'supernature' right? don't you want to trade something with that quincy jones record? i'll let you know when there are some other flea markets around bruges. i bought a book with all the flea markets in oost en west-vloanderen :D

peace!

The Jocko record is a lot of fun, and the Mike and Brenda Sutton is a really nice one. I think their song "We'll Make It" is a bit better, but both are great.

"shine on me" is one of my all-time one way favorites...by then (1983), Alicia Myers was out of the group and were reeling off their recent success of the funk classic "Cutie Pie" (another one way favorite)....i like the bass guitar touch a lot on this song..

Jocko was a radio dj going back to the fifties who often peppered his talk with rhymes as he introduced records on the air in New York and Baltimore (or was it Philadelphia????) one of the precurors for emceeing (rapping)...he passed away in 2000. graemlins/mecry.gif

aaahh Slick, the rhythm section behind Fat Larry's Band...they had a real hot record around 1981 called something to the extent of "Beat The Bush"...."space bass" is a timeless tune from them..

Mike and Brenda Sutton ultimately became divorced...they were based usually in Los Angeles and they produced/wrote for a lot of artists especially Thelma Houston (I'm Here Again)..."don't let go to me" was remixed by Shep Pettibone if my memory serves me correctly on the Sam record label...they had another hot record for Sam in 1981 called "We'll Make It"...a serious, serious club record...there's an interview with Mike Sutton on www.discomusic.com. (http://www.discomusic.com.)

dang! i found a copy of Live's "Strut Your Stuff" a few weeks ago...a funk-inflected 1981 tune, it was released on TSOB (The Sound Of Brooklyn) located somewhere around Fulton St. ...their records are not that easy to find...they came about around 1980 releasing records such as Sabata's "Man For My Lady" and Master Jay and Michael Dee's "The Sound of Brooklyn"...my all-time favorite TSOB record is 1982's "What's In It For Me" by Zalmac (Zulema Cusseaux and Al Mac)

enjoy those serious finds...we'll speak soon! :D :D

not much but i'm pretty happy with them...here they go...

johhny bristol "leave my world/all goodbyes aren't gone" (1975 MGM 45)

pamala stanley "i dont want to talk about it" (1983 Kommander) -- got an extra one for fifty cents for a possible future trade...

phyllis nelson -- "i like you" (1985 carrere/cbs)

12 by 12 -- Megatone 12-inch compilation featuring various songs by sylvester (sex, do you wanna funk, be with you), "megatron man", "menergy", and JoLo ("last call")

Cookbook -- 1977 Warner Brothers promotional double album featuring songs by the likes of the meters (trick bag), dionne warwick (once you hit the road), funkadelic (comin' round the mountain), banks & hampton (loving you), tony wilson (i like your style), and a stunning Lamont Dozier remake of "it's the same old song"...got it for 25 cents....

Elanor Grant -- "(i am ready) sexual healing" (1982 catawba)...an "answer" record to the Marvin Gaye original, this was produced by George Kerr and Reggie Griffin...mixed by Sergio Munzibai and John Morales (who were on fire back in the early 80s), and engineered by the legendary Bob Blank of New York's Blank Tape Studios...this record needs a real thorough cleaning as it has heavy dirt spots and sleeveless to boot...but i can't ask much for 25 cents.... smile.gif

...other classics to look for on the Catawba label are Sandy(???) Kerr's "Thug Rock" (rap takeoff on I-Level's "Give Me") and Arlana's "You Can't Keep Breaking My Heart" (another Munzibai and Morales mix)...come to think of it...most of the Munzibai and Morales mixes from the eighties had the midas touch:)

hey Tom, is that Quincy Jones album a good one ? In principle, i'm defenitly willing to trade ..Do you have the Supermax album ? (the one on Atlantic ? It's got Love Machine on it)..Let me know.. If not, i'll find something else ..
I already got that Cerrone 3 of course...I didn't pick it up at Juke Box, but at Pele Mele for 1 euro.. So now i've got two.. You can never be sure enough. ;)
When there's a next big flea market, let me know, and i might come over !

I think my find of the weekend has got to be that Rei Vera 'Love & Kisses'..(European disco from 1977) It's actually produced by Don Ray (Gotta have loving)..It was Rahaan who pointed that record out to me two months ago..The A side has a track called 'Accidental Lover'.. The beginning of the record is rather pathetic, but halfway it's starts getting really really good..I love those strings !

Kelvy & Andrew, are you serious about that 'We'll make it' by Mike & Brenda ? I saw that one two weeks ago.. It must have been a bad day ..Gave it a quick listen, but didn't feel it really (i'd never heard it before)..I'll go back to that store and check it again..

lyot
05-04-2003, 01:32 PM
And Kelvy, i was just playing that Strut record ..I wasn't really convinced in the store , but I took it anyway. .I'm happy I did..It's a great tune to play after some more uptempo stuff.

Friday, I'll be hunting again..On the cheap tip then..

Lyot, you definetly got to give "we'll make it" another try! this is true dancefloor soul with a real uplifting feel to it..

that live record is a real sleeper in there..they released another single for TSOB whose name escapes me before they faded into oblivion...

i also got these tapes for fifty cents each yesterday...

1987 Juicy album (pretty nice but nowhere near their pinnacle "sugar free")

1982 Dells Compilation on Sugarhill

1984 Denise LaSalle (Right Place Right Time) on Maalaco which has the blues classic "your husband is cheating on us"...

let's keep this one going!

I love this tune!!! graemlins/cheering.gif [/QB]</font>
this is great to hear especially driving late at night....when the late Frankie Crocker made his comeback on WBLS around 1989, the on-air promo that would have snippets of popular songs would include "your husband is cheating on us" as one of its tunes...

Not bad for $10 :D 14 K is a stellar 1980 album with the cuts "concrete jungle" and the super-smooth song "chillin out"...."hot box" has "money...gotta get my hands on some" if my memory serves me right...The "Tasty Jam" album has eluded me for years...take a listen at those slick-n-sick keyboards on "kool whip" (aaaah kool whip baby...move your body...move it like a snake) and that superserious funk tune "Keep Your Fingers Out The Jam" ..Fired Up N'Kickin has another superserious dancefloor funk tune called "get out on the dancefloor", a slept-on number overshadowed by the classic "i like girls", which is not to be messed with!

one overlooked Fatback album that i wholeheartedly recommend is 1982's "On The Floor"...the title track is hot and so is "burn baby burn"....while the "mellow madness" side has a solid winner with "she's my shining star" :D hail.gif

that live record is a real sleeper in there..they released another single for TSOB whose name escapes me before they faded into oblivion...

i also got these tapes for fifty cents each yesterday...

Yesssssss!! I loved juicy "Sugar Free" I especisally liked "For Ever and Ever"
That one was produced by Deodato no ?? </font>
that "sugar free" is a stone cold mid-80s classic...the bass guitar arrangement sounds influenced by the gap band's "yearning for your love" but it definetly takes off on its own with its remarkable moodiness...this deliciously sleazy slice of 80s r&b would nicely follow up with Mtume's "COD (I Deliver)"..."sugar free" has been sampled quite a few times, most notably by the rapper AZ on his cut "Sugarhill" around '95 or so...

i'm not familiar with "for ever and ever", but Juicy were produced in their early years by Deodato, one of my favorite 80s producers right up there with Kashif and Leon Sylvers...

speak soon Chris and enjoy!

I totally took a chance on this one just based on the look and the year and the fact that it had an instrumental, in case the vocal sucked which is often the case, anyway this on has a very nice instrumental kinda an 80's mellow boogie sound, I think you would like it alot Kelvy, definately keep an eye out for it.

</font>
The Greedy one is pretty good, nothing to wright home about  . When I saw the sleeve I was hoping that it was Juice "Catch A Groove", but I had never seen anything on that label before so I picked it up, it's some pretty good disco.
The Main Line is a cover, not a suprise coming from Began Cekic, of Rockwell's song of the same name, it borrows a couple lines from a Michael Jackson tune which came out around that time. and it's got a REAL NICE dub on the flipside. Actually I wish it had a version between the Main Vocal and the dub, with some of the vocals, the vocals just get to be a little much when he is talking about how he thinks the mail man is watching him and so on.... graemlins/stupid.gif
Monzie D is straight 80's hip hop, again by Began Cekic, but this ones nothing special either...
The Wish feat. Fonda Ray is alright, it's a early house outing by Greg Charmichael and Patrick Adams..a nice one to add to the collection if you're a fan of these two.

hey DjKlas, thanks for putting down your details about your finds...about the "Yambu" album, i never came across it on the used tip, but i saw this scan of the record label out on the net...

http://www.rehashmedia.com/images/yambu.gif

and you can hear one of the songs, "hippopatamus", in its entirety, at this link...

http://www.rehashmedia.com/audio/yambu.ram

go-go music is a unique DC take on funk with extended percussion chants coupled with intricate call-and-response lyrics...think of the percussion-heavy break on "Bustin Loose" or to take it to the pop level....EU's "Da Butt"...groups like Rare Essence and Trouble Funk helped spark some popularity nationwide in the eighties

going back to the "freak unique", you know it's gotta be an early-mid 80s record if it has "freak" anywhere in the title:)

also, thanks for looking me out for "knock me out", but i got that one somewhere already...however, i can email you later on with a want list and visa versa....not a problem...

keep enjoying those finds Mr. Klas...have a great week!

new & old, after three weeks with no dough, I blew the budget again.

KENNY DOPE FRENZY 7" (DOPEWAX). Rough ass beats the way Kenny knows, dope.
DANNY KRIVIT EDITS BY MR K 3 X 12" (STRUT), don't really need to go into detail, you should buy this cos it's Struts last release, and this is a shame.
TYREE ACID CRASH (HOUSE MUSIK), Ten years in the hunt. At last, thanks Rob, Placid & Maelstrom, for help in locating this.
FLOORPLAY FLOOR 02 (FLOORPLAY), madhouse French (?) re edits, great quirky house.
STAR YOU STAR ME DISCO DANCER (SLIP N SLIDE), Metro Area (ish) vocal space disco by one half of Velcro fastener. Nice.
LOUIE VEGA feat RAUL MIDON CERCA DE MI (VEGA RECORDS), beautiful summertime house/latin whatever.
IBADAN PRESENTS THE NATURE SOUL EP (IBADAN) , four track EP of deep house done the Ibadan way, some nice stringy parts haven't picked a favourite yet.
BRAINSTORM/ GREENE / TP WE'RE ON OUR WAY HOME/ RUNNIN/ IF YOU KNOW LIKE I KNOW, disco re edits, with the prize going to Greene feat Col Abrahams, ****IN BAD TRACK.
CASPA CODINA CHEMISTRY (NONSTOP) , this is ****ing brilliant, Har Mar Superstar type track, with a hip hop remake, and two house cuts on the A side
DAVID TAYLOR SOLID GROOVE DUBSIDED EP (DUBSIDED) Another EP of quirky house n stuff, by the Floorplay guy mentioned above.
PRAISE CATS SHINED ON ME (PIAS), Gospel stomper, with Unabombers deep remake, nice stuff, a manc anthem.
RAMIRO MENDES ANGOLA C2 & PEPE BRADOCK MIXES )BMG), now out C2 wins the day, shout to Pepe for weirdness though.
JUSTUS KOHNCKE HOMOGEN (KOMPACT), funky electronicdisco nonsense. I like this fellow .
FRANKIE FELICIANO REAL THINGS 3 (KING STREET SOUNDS), 3 straight up nice US house cuts, no fave as of yet.
PAPA WEMBA MAWE RON TRENT MIXES (DISTANCE), Both sides great deep mixes.
KEMETICJUST DO YOU REMEMBER (PEPE BRADOCK MIX) 1 SIDED (SILVER NETWORK), Again!
VARIOUS ARTISTS LARRY LEVAN'S PARADISE GARAGE 3 X 12 (WEST END), great compilation, expensive but needed, all good.
FRANCOIS DE RUBAIX CINEMIX 10" (CINEMIX), this is great, but price Carl Craigs remix is superb, the other stuff is defo notable, but I haven't really got past Mr Craig.
Interpol - NYC 7" Mo Punk rock stuff from this great band
Gnac - hennenbert Sleeve friends of mine, a melodic little number, with a Plaid like track on the B
Har Mar Superstar - Har Mar Superstar - pic disc LP mmmm i trhink this fellow is great.
Raphael Saadiq - Sky's the limit. Yam Who edit, absolutely brilliant really nice summer soul music.

Phenomena Theme is a Rinder & Lewis production, as featured on the Street Beats' Ultimate Breaks and Beats series. Nice track in my opinion.

I didn't like this so I got rid of my copy, apparently it's quite valuable, although I have no clue why. I was it on Nick's site last year, he had it up there for alot.

Nice one. Very rare. Isn't there another one? something about a "friend".... maybe?

Take it easy Al! </font>
Hey Klas

Do a google search for the Elijah John Group. I found about five for sale at cheap prices. It's well worth picking up. Kinda like a Walter Gibbons mix, but tight!

Phenomena theme is pretty typical R+L - Nice big production, with a slightly dark edge. There's a wicked drum break which is probably why it's in demand.

The Willow Band is a CBS radio promo. It's only 3 minutes long, and isn't really my kind of thing, quite laid back, slightly jazzy, but I know it's a piece so had to have it for the price I got it for!

Lonzine Wright - the only 3 I know of are the Taxi one, this one and You're so good, which is the one to have, but of course the hardest to find.

hey Klas !

yeah, happy friday..I'm extremely happy with my copy of Ca-the-drals.. (also on your mix)...I had never thought i would find it in Belgium, as it an extremely rare record..

I don't really dig that backward Trans Lux yet, but after some listening, that might change..You like it ?

What do you think of that Intelligence by Monzie D (also Cekic production I believe..) ..I found that one too, a couple of months ago.. I dig it..

And that Intro Discotheque is the 6th copy I find in that store.. I gave one away to Rahaan (see our video of the Fame Sucks party on Sean Sounds webpage..You see the record in the beginning of the footage..I love the cover !! )..

Half of the stuff I picked up today I already had..I'm planning to sell some of it, and trade others...I still have to sent you that Il Veliero track, by the way.. Would you mind sending me an updated wish list of yours ? You never know if I've got other stuff you need..

greetings !

ps : are you gonna go digging tomorrow ?

I really like the backwards cut on that Trans-lux, I think it's great for mixing with things to make them sound a little crazy. I'm not too into that Monzie D, but I've only listened to it once... Thanks for holding onto that Il Valerio for me, If you want to trade one of those intro discos I'll give you something, my pressing dosen't have that cool picture cover...
I will send you a list soon....No digging for me this weekend, I bought a couple things online this week so I'll be broke for a little while...

[/QB]The 12" of "Bite Your Granny" is dope too.

I just got a copy of a 12" by a group called Cloud. I'm assuming their from London because the label is UK Champagne. I actually thought the record was a Cloud One 12" of "Doin' it All Night" because that's what the desription said. So I was kind of upset when I got the record in the mail. However both tunes "All Night Long" and "Take it to the Top" are some garage heaters. I'm glad I made a mistake. ;)

The Elijah John Group is definitely a sleeper. Actually, I've found nothing but heat on the Keylock label (Gotham Flasher, Chantal Curtis, Elijah John Group). I didn't know Patrick Adams and Terry Lewis ever did anything together. I just found a Magnetic Touch "Ain't Gonna be a Next Time" 12" on P&P. Funky soul.
