Muhammad Ali meets Benedikt Taschen

G. O. A. T.* - A Tribute

Muhammad Ali, 61, is one of the most remarkable personalities of our time and the greatest sportsman ever to walk the earth. This dedicated and outspoken ambassador for peace, freedom, and equal rights boasts a boxing record that is still unbeaten, two decades after his retirement. To honor this living legend, TASCHEN is making an epic book that will be just as unique and fabulous as the extraordinary man himself.

Since Muhammad Ali is larger than life—so will be the book. At about 20 x 20 inches (50 cm x 50 cm) and about 800 pages, it will take a heavyweight just to lift it. Just as our colossal SUMO marked a milestone in the career of Helmut Newton, Muhammad Ali will be such a milestone for the most memorable athlete of all time. The book will feature a comprehensive chronicle of Ali’s life and career, illustrated by a plethora of previously unpublished material from private archives. Nearly 3.000 photographs of Ali, in public and private, will be accompanied by essays from over 20 different contributors (including Ali’s own writings) as well as press reviews, posters and other memorabilia, and a full list of all fights.

The total worldwide print run for this limited-edition objet will be 10,000. The edition will be numbered and hand-signed by both Muhammad Ali and Jeff Koons.

The first 1,000 copies include four limited-edition original silver gelatine prints signed by Muhammad Ali and photographer Howard Bingham and an original sculpture multiple created by Jeff Koons. A photographic work by Koons will accompany the other 9,000 copies. Koons, 48, is one of the most important living artists, an American icon of the art world.

Publication date is scheduled for Autumn 2003, at a retail price of $3,000 per copy and $7,500 for the first 1,000 copies.

Mr. Ali, whose endorsement has made this project possible, is working with TASCHEN to make a definitive tome that will convey his legacy to future generations. This will be THE ultimate Muhammad Ali book—and a truly distinctive TASCHEN experience.
