Whatever the conservatives believe in or stand for, we already have something to remember Reagan for and that is the spread of AIDS. If not for his administration's position on the AIDS epidemic in the early 80s, the medical community could have gotten a better start on finding the source and cure for the disease and public awareness may have been heightened to help in the fight. Instead all we got was stonewalling and condemnation of the people who contracted AIDS through homosexual sexual activity. In fact, I believe that until Ryan White died of AIDS or its complications, the public was largely unaware that anyone could get AIDS.

And to add insult in injury they, the consevatives, want to put him (Reagan) on the dime. graemlins/jpshakehead.gif Now if you want to put him on a wooden nickel than you have my vote.

I feel ya David...
I remember watching the news in 1980 (i was 9) and hearing them talk about a 'gay cancer'... something inside of me said 'uh, oh'... i felt that this thing would be big... i can't say why... but that report shook me... i remember it as clear as day...
the apathy shown by that administration was pathetic... the apathy shown by conservatives... ugh... going so far as to say it was a punishment from God... it makes me SO mad!!!
They wanna put Reagan on a dime???!!! graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

anyone who wants to understand exactly how the Reagan administration reacted to the AIDS epidemic should read "And the Band Played On"...

during his entire administration, I don't believe he actually said the word "AIDS" once. graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

This was also key in getting that CBS miniseries on Reagan cancelled...apparently Ronnie's friends didn't like the scenes with him running down AIDS patients: "They lived in sin, and they shall die in sin."

Exactly....the "A" word never pass thru his lips.

The Band played on .... what an incredible movie! I love the part where they are both together while Madame Butterfly Opera (?) is playing.....wow!

Happy Holidays!

After all this they still carry on with their "wordspeak" and expect everyone to just stay as sheep while they take care of "our" country.

Not until they realized that the Red Cross was also contributing to the spread of aids by taking and giving blood for transfusions (no aids test for blood had been established) and people were starting to get aids who weren't even having sexual contact with anyone. People started to drop like flies. Perhaps this has been the major cause for certain conditions now as we lost a lot of folks from the arts. Also what was frightening was that once you got it and after about a 6 month incubation period you would be dead in 6-9 months as there was NO medication for this. Myself and others lost countless friends.

THANKS A LOT RONNIE!

first of all, WTF - they wanna put regan on a dime?????
no thank you.

that was a very frightening period. the begining of the aids epidemic, i'm still convinced they created it. mainstream doesn't question it, if it's happening to "them"

david, i just wanted to say thank you - i always enjoy your political posts. graemlins/respekt.gif

Lost two friends and my uncle - the last surviving member of my mother's family - to AIDS.

Thanks Ron. Loved your movies, btw.

AIDS is still one of the biggest problems facing the world. The devastation in Africa is impossible for us to get our heads around.

I have two friends with HIV. They have been 'stable' for some years now.

The campaign of public information films regarding AIDS/HIV in the UK started in 1985 if memory serves.

Angels in America premieres tonight on HBO. From what I hear its a pretty powerful film dealing with Aids, denial,
and the Reagan Era.

I guess O'reilly and Hannity are gonne be screaming 'more lies from the left' come Monday Night.

ronnie was a disaster all the way around, but his position on aids was particularly shameful, personally, i've lost countless friends, classmates, and the infant son of a friend. those were very scary times that really tested your own courage. back then, hiv positive was a death sentence, one season you are young, vibrant, ripping up the dance floor next season at 90 pounds knocking on death's door, so many losses, so much creativity lost in the art, music, fashion, dance worlds

By ERICA WERNER, AP

WASHINGTON (Dec. 5) - Conservative Republicans angry over an unflattering television movie about Ronald Reagan want to put his image on the dime in place of Democratic icon Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Democrats are just as determined to keep FDR's profile in coin purses.

AP
Conservatives angry over an unflattering TV movie portrayal of Ronald Reagan are taking aim at Democratic icon Franklin Roosevelt.

''If they want to find another way to honor Ronald Reagan, I'm happy to join with them, but leave the dime alone,'' said Rep. James McGovern, D-Mass.

Supporters of the ''Ronald Reagan Dime Act'' said Roosevelt and his government-expanding New Deal represented decades past, while Reagan's conservative, anti-communist administration ushered in society as it exists today.

Triggering the dispute is a TV movie that depicts a doddering Reagan dominated by his wife, Nancy. The movie is being aired by Showtime after CBS canceled its plans to show it last month in response to pressure by Reagan supporters.

''It's what precipitated me introducing the bill at that time and why it was a lot easier to get a lot of support,'' said Rep. Mark Souder, R-Ind.

Souder said he has collected 89 co-sponsors for his bill to mint a new dime featuring Reagan. Among them are more than a dozen House members from California, where the former president lives secluded and suffering from Alzheimer's disease in his Los Angeles home.

''I believe he represents conservative values as we would see them implemented through a president better than anybody else we've had in American history,'' Souder said. ''He, to conservatives, represents kind of the reverse of FDR, who is kind of the liberal icon. Ronald Reagan is the conservative icon.''

McGovern claims 80 co-sponsors on his opposing bill affirming Congress' support for keeping Roosevelt on the dime. The lone Republican among them is New York Rep. John Sweeney, who represents the Hyde Park area that was Roosevelt's home.

Reagan has ''already been honored in many ways - he's got an airport named after him, and a building, and there are schools and roads and bridges and other things,'' McGovern said.

''While it's important to honor President Reagan, I think it's also important that we do so in a way that doesn't dishonor the memory and the legacy of Franklin Delano Roosevelt,'' he said.

It isn't uncommon to change images on currency, but the custom has been to wait until the person being memorialized is dead.

''I certainly would not look at it in any way as dishonoring FDR. He's also one of my favorite presidents,'' said Rep. Wally Herger, R-Calif. ''He was also interestingly enough a personal hero of President Reagan's, but frankly I feel more connection with Reagan. He's a Californian, also closer to us now in history.''

Souder rounded up support from colleagues for his bill with a letter, headed ''Win One for the Gipper,'' that lambasted CBS for its ''vile miniseries.''

The dime has borne Roosevelt's profile since 1946, a year after his death, in part commemorating his support for the March of Dimes campaign to fight polio.
