After Larry Heard, Kenny Larkin, Ron Trent and Mike Dunn it is now time to have Kerri Chandler as main guest on this unique Sunday concept. Here is the full info, quite some text but I have a lot to say :-)
Past
It has been well over a year since the last Sunday Matinee with Mike Dunn took place at our beloved Charlatan. After 4 editions – 3 of which very successful, one a total fuck-up – Red D decided it was time to call it a day. The idea to bring out people to party on a Sunday afternoon till early night had proven to be a good one, but there were still lots of people who did not understand and ‘could not make it because last night was so heavy’. Well, the whole idea of the Sunday Matinee is exactly not to go out like crazy till Sunday morning and then miss out on the rest of the weekend, but indeed to arrive fresh and ready and allow for a deeper understanding and feeling of the music.
A chance meeting
On the last edition of the legendary 10 Days Off festival in Ghent Red D feat Lady Linn were programmed to play and close the first Saturday night. The dj before them was none other than Mr Kerri Chandler, a true legend and one of the most musically interesting dj’s and producers ever to grace the world of house music and beyond. Red D asked Kerri on the spot to play live keyboards on top of the first track he played. Lady Linn joined in and the rest is history. Those who were there remember 2 hours of improvisation and musical surprise of the highest quality and many asked us to repeat this jam session one day. Kerri Chandler struck a chord with Lady Linn and Red D that day and so we just had to make it happen.
And now…
On Sunday 10th May Kerri Chandler, Lady Linn and Red D will be bringing you 8 hours of music combined with live singing and keyboards. The exact nature and timing of this performance will remain a mystery for all of you until the day arrives. After all, you cannot plan improvisation now can you? So in contrast with today’s highly regulated nightlife, with timetables and music styles defined in such a rigid way it is almost ridiculous, there will be no set line-up for this event. It starts at 17h and will finish at 1h, that is all you need to know.
Kerri Chandler
Kerri Chandler has been at the top of the house game since the early ‘90ies. It is impossible to name a top 10 of his best and most revered tracks because he has made too many blissful pieces of house music to just make such a selection. It is safe to say that Kerri is a producer, dj and even singer of the highest quality, who always bring a live element into his dj’ing. He is also one of the only house producers who has succeeded in crossing the boundaries of dance music. His track Bar-A-Thym was picked up and championed by dj’s playing minimal, techno, tech house, etc. A true master of his game.
Lady Linn
This big little lady no longer needs and introduction. Gifted singer and songwriter she became one of the hottest artists in Belgium along the course of last year. ‘Lady Linn and her Magnificent Seven’ were all over the place, making one hit song after the other. House music fanatics had already spotted her years ago, creating house music bliss alongside Red D on many stages and on many occasions. Her first studio effort at house music proved to be an immediate success: the track 20070505 by San Soda was remixed by Lady Linn and Red D and became a club hit almost overnight. Lady Linn will not cease to amaze you in the many things she does.
Red D
A veteran of the house music game and a dj who will at times amaze and annoy you. Sometimes a no-nonsense party dj and sometimes a musical dictator, but always with an eye for the dance floor and an ear for tunes nobody else will play. Red D’s vision on house music has become even more clear through the music he releases on his label We Play House Recordings: no genres, no boundaries, just good and honest music.
Food for the mind AND the body
We all know the feeling: waking up late on Sunday and facing that same problem again…what am I going to eat? Well, for this edition of the Sunday Matinee we have solved that question for you. The doors of Charlatan’s lovely terrace will open at 14h, allowing you to come over and wake up with a smooth drink. Next to that you can also enjoy a nice BBQ to get in shape for the rest of the afternoon and evening. The BBQ costs 10 euro and you will need to register and pay in advance.
