1) Circa 1975; 'round 'bout 5:00am at the Continental Baths. Us diehards are hanging around the ticket desk and this blowhard comes in, trying to get into the club (at 5:00am! This was not the PG!) and talking mad trash 'bout he's the greatest and whatnot. This club's outer door was a swinging door, so he talking and this gust of wind rises up and blows the door open. He says: "See, even the wind loves me!" I say: "Yeah, so why don't you just blow!" Kings and Queens rolling on the floor laughing. The guy scurries off with his tail between his legs. Killed his high, I guess. :D

2) (you may have already heard this one. I tell it often enough.) Circa 1976; Bopping to the music at the BD, danced with this guy, then we headed to the bar for a drink. He asks me: "You come here often?" "Sometimes," I say. He asks: "You like the music?" I say: "Oh, the music is hot!" He: "The DJ is my cousin." "Really?" I say. "He's my brother!" The guy questions the veracity of that statement, so we proceed to bop on over to the booth. I get there and tell Tee what the guy said and turn around to introduce him to his "cousin" but, oddly, the guy was nowhere to be found. graemlins/stupid.gif

3) I had this little minor crush on the lip syncher in DC. Naturally, I resented her woman. Had nothing good to say about her. Until one day she was herself performing at "The Other Side" in DC. Miss thing comes down the stairs looking like the ONLY DIVA WHO HAD EVER LIVED, lip synching "I Can't Stand This Feeling All Alone," by Phyllis Hyman. Bear in mind this woman is 6 feet all (like Phyllis) with the most incredible eyes ever created by God. graemlins/1luvu.gif Can you say "transfer of affections? I knew that you could.

4)Sitting at the bar at Tracks DC with my ex-boyfriend, the new object of my lu... er, affections and another of her puppy-dogs. I've got my back turned to my ex, talking to my fellow puppy-dog (this is what one gets when one has a thing for models, by the way). My ex is talking to the object of my desire. All of a sudden I hear my ex declare: "I'm totally gay for men!" I turn around and say, "What? Why are you declaring yourself in a gay club?" He made light of it, but I suddenly realize "This chick is hitting on my man!" mad1.gif Yeah, it's twisted, but... I ended up marrying that man. Anyway, I moved on from there.

5)Either I'm still waiting for the fifth event, or it already happened and I don't remember it.

Way too many to pinpoint any one or five plus I was on a lot of different drugs. There was this little freckled faced light skinned cat that was at the Plant every Friday nite. I don't know how he did it but he would just spin and i don't know where he was getting his momentum from I mean he looked like something was under him that made him spin. Seeing these cats that looked like they hads just got out of the joint at The Box (lower wacker) looking all hard and shit and Ron would drop something and they would turn into total queens. Seeing cats bring their girlfriend to the party and watching the girl get turned out by someone else.. The smell of stick in the air. The goings on in the girls bathroom of La Ray's, Rialto's, Bad Boys, The Plant, The Box(lower wacker) The Gallery getting raided by the cops 1hr after we got there and watching everybody stashing their drugs. Just to name a few. Sitting in the booth at Rialto's getting high with Michael Ezebkwu....priceless memories. The shit that went on at The Box (lower wacker) after the party closed and put out all of the kids can never be mentioned.
Peace

DJing a party in Brooklyn around 88-89 with Bobby Konders. He dropped Shabba's "Gal Yuh Good" and I swear a riot almost broke out. I had never seen a record get that kind of reaction. That's when I knew I had to keep DJing just so, if nothing else, I could learn how to make a crowd bug out like that.

1) The first time i went into complete frenzy state hearing to acid house, house, italo house in a paradise called Portugal in the late 80's, dancing among a bunch of hollandese/english/dutsch and portuegese people enjoying to be all together...

2) Hearing Paul Johnson playing a wonderful set of music and showing us his skills (when he was really at the top !) in one of the most beautiful places in Paris (Wagram, antic and rich teather)

3) dj Sneak dropping some bad ass chicago style at Rex club, i couldn't stop my feet from moving ! lol

4) Laurent Garnier, showing us why he's one of real top worldwide dj's (anytime, anyplace)

5) Last but not least, 4 years back, when i met a girl at Scream (gay biggest Parisian party) whom i have been sharing some of my most beautiful dayz and nights for more than 4 years...I knew i loved her the first time i saw her...

too many to mention but these come to mind immediately.

1- my first time at the limelight in montreal in in the fall of 1975. the lights, the sound, the music. it was totally mesmerizing for a 15 year old. Robert Ouimet was insane. he didn't give a damn. he would stop the music at 4 in the morning & throw on a Fela track. and the poppers!!! OMG!!!
2- Paradise Garage. 1980. my first time. it changed my life. nothing more to say. i became a devout monthly road tripper.
3- Zanzibar-1981. First time. First real TAB experience. TEE SCOTT. blew my ****ing mind. the place was out of control.
4- me capturing second place at the Aragon Ballroom Chi-town 1983 for the Great Battle Of THe Dj's. met Ralphi Rosario. Played against local Hudson Beaudauy (sp)(who should have won imo),Scott Blackwell, Cameron Paul & two other dj's. forgot their names. the crowd was loving it.
5- Shelter 1992. Timmy was on fire. he dropped don't leave me this way & the crowd went bananas. i thought the floor was going to cave in. also one night in 1983, Kevin Hedge played. it was my first time hearing him & he was way out there!!

The box that I refer to was located 326 lower wacker dr. I use this distiction because The Box had two other location as well at different times. Some people refer to The Box when it was on 22nd and michigan and others when it was on 16th street. Just different locations at different times. That's all. It was held down by the legendary Ron Hardy.

Apparently everyone else in the club was well familiar with the song, so they're all screaming "The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire," then "Don't say nothin'. Let the mother****er burn!" and smoke is filtering down from above and I'm all zooted up. I go into full panic mode. "Oh these fools are just gonna burn up in this place. Go down in flames. Not me!" I start looking for an exit. Then I realize the bartenders are still tending bar, the sitters are still sitting, the leaners are still leaning. Everyone was real calm, except me.

I played it of as my dance moves and getting "into" the music. graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

It's ever changing, but here they are in no particular order:

1) hearing Louie play in Myconos @ Cavo Paradiso summer of '02 with my soon to be wife was very special.

2) Mr. C on the terrace @ DC 10 September 10 '01

3) Hanging out with Paul Johnson and Gant in Ibiza a couple of summers ago when Paul was riding the Get, Get Down wave through his residency at that club that I don't like there. We had some good times on the terrace @ Space.

4) One night a few years back, I was buggin' on god only knows what. I went to a few spots in the city and none of 'em quenched my thirst, I heard about a warehouse party in the far reaches of Bushwick. By the time I got there around 5, the spot had been shut by the po-po. I was all turned around and didn't know what to do. I caught a ride with some people that called a car and were going back to my hood. We went by my house and I realized I couldn't go home because of my hectic state. I went right by my place in BKLYN and back to where else, but SHELTER @ VINYL. I have never heard Timmy play like that in my life and I got loose like I've never gotten before.

5) Goin back like ten-twelve years, I used to live in Philly and we would drive as far South as VA and North to MA for parties. I remember an after-party somewhere in MA in some Ski Lodge with Onionz and Doc Martin that was outta control!

6) Saem era as last, partyin DC got shut down, we moved it out to this spot which was actually outdoors on a point overlooking the Potomac!! they were playing some funky house and mixed into some MJ track!! Holy! I was so obliterated, I taught myself to juggle (literally).

#5 Twilo '97/'98??

My Friend Dilek and I tried to get into the Tunnel and they wouldn't let us in. We'd parked across the street from Twilo, which was once The Sound Factory. While walking back to the car, Dilek motioned to Twilo and asked, "What's that?" I explained that it was Twilo and that it was VERY gay and that there was NO WAY they'd let us in there. She said, "C'mom, John!! Let's TRY!!" I said OK and we went.

We walked up, boy-girl, and the door-queen looked at us like, "You've GOT to be kidding..." I asked, "Who's playing tonight?" He replied, "Junior Vasquez, Frankie Knuckles, Danny Tenaglia and Sitoshe Tomiie." Up until this point, I really didn't care one way or the other, but after hearing that line-up, I wanted to go in there like a mother****er.

I started digging for my money when the guy says, "I'm sorry, but this is a gay club." I said, "Yeah man. I know, but GODDAMN, did you hear that line-up you just ran off?? We just want to dance tonight." So, after a little back and forth, he asks me, "Are YOU a gay man?" I recoiled and said, "Psshh... NO." Then, Dilek, with her doe-like innocence jumped in and said to the guy, "Howzabout we be gay just for tonight, OK?" This got a chuckle from the guy. He said, "OK, but don't make it a habit", then moved the velvet rope as we passed.

Those cats tore Twilo a new one.

#4 Studio 54 '91/'92 Larry Levan.

Me and my boy Supreme (in those days, most of my boys were coke slingin' 5%-ers) went to 54 to catch Larry Levan. It was my first and last time both at 54 and hearing Larry Live.

We were smoking a blunt on one of the lower levels when this HUGE man-mountain walked up and screamed, "HEY!" I thought, "Damn. We're about to get thrown out." Then, he continued, "Take that shit up to the fourth floor." On the fourth floor, which was a mezzanine/balcony type deal (54's an old theater), about 15 or 20 cats were sitting along this long bench, elbow to elbow snorting coke from bills. It was surreal. We finished our blunt and went downstairs for the show.

Those cats sang "Open up your heart". It may have been Strafe, but I'm not sure. Then Xavier Gold came out and brought the ****ing house down with, "You Used to Hold Me". Then out came the REAL queen of Disco, Loleatta Holloway. She was magnificent.

After the show, Larry was doing his thing, Hot cut after hot cut (Nitro Deluxe - The Brutal House stands out in my mind from that set). Then he just let the music fade out. It was quiet for about a full minute then, only over the monitors, you heard "Love Overboard", by Gladys Knight and the Pips. That's right, Love Overboard. Cats were staring into the booth like Larry had his wang out and was waving it. Like twenty cats sat down on the dance floor. But by the end of that song, with gradual volume increases to the system, some effects and a couple of volume bursts, that place was JUMPING off of ****ing Love Overboard. Only Larry.

#3 Club Zanzibar Halloween '89/'90

Me and one of my best friends, James Curtis, hit the Zanz on Halloween. First, You gotta understand about Zanz on Halloween.

Cats would roll into the Zanz on Halloween wearing the most interesting and inventive costumes you'd ever seen. There were pregnant nuns, Gorillas, clowns dressed in the full, silk checkered harlequin suits, cats wearing their Karate Gees, you name it.

Plus, we were jacked up on Mescaline. So, this night was surreal from the get go.

We're out on the floor dancing and TRIPPIN' when Tony turns down the music for the show. The club went completly dark. Then you heard this blood-curdling shriek, "YYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH, YAAAHHH, YAAAAAAHHHH, YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!" Out walks this blonde chick, about 6'2", clad in leather and looking like Xena, Warrior Princess. She continues to shriek. "HOW Y'ALL DOIN'??!? I'm SCREEEEEEEAAAAAAMIN' Rachel!!!!" It was Screaming Rachel, the white chick from the Mary Jane Girls. She came out and Sang, "After Effect" which was HOT, then she KILLED the club with, "FUN, FUN, FUN, FUN, FUN TONIGHT, WITH BAAAAD BOOOOYYYS!!!!" Total chaos and insanity.

#2 Club Shelter '92 - Present.

My cumulative times at Shelter are at #2. There have been so many heart-warming, head-pounding, thoughtful, erotic, senseless, meaningful, draining, tearful, chemically enhanced, drunken, friendly, life changing moments at Shelter that will live with me forever.

** #1 ** Club Zanzibar '90/'91? James Curtis, Libby Jones.

This was the club night of all club nights.

"...I wanna see all my friends at once..." Well, I did this night. You ever have one of those nights where almost EVERYBODY you know is at the club? Well this was one of those nights.

Curt and I smoked some killer Thai sticks, dropped tabs and had been drinking from a fifth of Seagrams V.O. in my trunk. Tony Humphries played himself into immortality that night. It was easily one of the best three sets I have EVER, EVER, EVER heard to date. No performer or single song made this night perfect. It was the combination of friends, the mystical Zanz Vibe, illicit chemicals and alcohol and my foolish youth. It was nirvana.

The night would end, however, tragically.

Curt, Libby and I staggered out of the club into the daylight a little after seven AM. We walked past the Lincoln Motel to where our cars were. I noticed that Libby's car was missing. I said, "Hey Libby, Where are your car keys?" She said, "Right here." I said, "OK, now where is your CAR?" Libby began to cry hysterically as she realized her car had been stolen. So we went to the last place on earth a guy hopped up on mesc and still pretty drunk wants to be at 8:00AM on Sunday 10 hours of partying:

The police station.

While inside with Libby Talking with the police, that mesc had me wanting to giggle so badly. I stepped out side and had a hysterical laughing session with Curtis for about ten minutes; for no ****ing reason. We realized that we were a little out of control, so we popped the trunk and started drinking the V.O., across the street from the police station. Kids are pretty stupid. GREAT night, bad ending.

a few years ago zed, jordan and i went out the crobar to see frankie knuckles. the line went for at least 2 blocks. it was cold as shit. zed was the only that was 25 years old at the time. if you were under 25 you needed two ids. we found that out after we'd been in line for about a 1/2hr. the line hadn't really moved anywhere. jordan didn't have two ids. zed held our place in line while i drove jordan back south to hyde park to get another id. by the time we got back to the crobar, zed was at the front of the line and had only allowed a couple of people to cut him. we walked right in. i don't remember much after that. hopefully, that party was worth it.

about a year or two before that, i came to a party at a place called the pyramid or something. it was on clark st. its now something else. anyway, i rolled up there by myself. i got in line for the party about a 1/2 a block up the street this time. zed and jordan were in front of me. a girl i know named attaliah was with some friends several people behind me. farley was supposed to be spinning.
the place was packed. going up the stairs was packed. up in the place was packed. farley was slamming real2reals. everyone was going nuts, but there was really no room to go nuts. the floor wobbled under the pressure. that night was awesome.

one night at the warehouse, i rolled up there by myself once again. occasionally i would see people i worked with up there. that was nice. anyway, the music was on and my shirt was off. i was snapping. really out of control. a tall slender dark-skinned woman grabbed me from behind and started fondling my chest and jacking me from behind. then a voluptuous light-skinned woman approached me from the front and grabbed me around the back and started jacking. it was at the pinnacle of support and stimulation that i had a moment of clarity. the women didn't know each other yet they were both drawn to jack me at the same moment. there was something truly profound about that. god's hand was clearly responsible.

praise jah.

the most precious experience i've had wasn't at a club. it was at a house party in urbana, Il. i went there with my brother james because he was a graduate student at uiuc at the time. there was a filipino dude spinning deep house. the dancing and music was happening in the living room. i had just finished a case of budweiser with my brother and we had just come from the basement with refreshments we rustled up from the keg. we were full of courage. while my brother stood on the wall i danced. at some point, i was surrounded by six women. we were all dancing together. the music was playing and i started into a move and accidently hit the dj table. the dj tried to get mad, but the women had my back. i felt supported by these strangers. that felt good. the music continued to play. as i stood in front of the table, to my left was girl putting on a display of her own. i would soon move toward her. she was so alluring. we danced together for the rest of the night. we got excited about the same songs. we hugged each in support several times. at some point, the night was going so well that i didn't want something horrible to happen that would fuc up the high; however, i was curious as to if i could somehow make something that felt so good last for a long time. so i asked that girl if she wanted to form an alliance with me.

that girl was lola desire.

Blue RIGHT ON, BLUE!

This was number 1 and 2 in my club moment. Steve Price and I were standing right in the middle of the Bismarck that night and we were asking each other why is these cats booin' Frankie. Then, Frankie puts on the Strings of Life and the beginning interlude starts to play....heads were looking at Frankie like, what the **** is this?

Then that track broke out....

IMMEDIATE MUH ****IN' CHAOS.

The middle of the Bismarck spead wide open into a SERIOUS slam dance pit and heads went total apeshit.

Now that was house, gatdammit.

THEN, if your sorry ass didn't get enough, HE PLAYED IT AGAIN AT THE END OF HIS SET!!!! and cats went bezerk again.

There was nothing Lil' Louis could do that night. As far as I was concerned, Louis could have shut the party down and went home after Frankie broke out.

In my mind, (filled with Gills beer and some weed from 47th, mind you) Frankie went to the NEXT, NEXT level.

'Cuse me while I go dry off. The mere memory of that party "makes my nature rise."

1. Danny Tenaglia @ Back to Basics, 1994, those of us who were still on the dancefloor at 6 am, formed a circle as Danny hurt us with two further hours of DISCO, the owner of the club passed out pairs of sunglasses as the sun started streaming in through the glass roof of the club - Danny stop the record, came to the front of the decks and clapped us all for a solid 30 seconds then went back and dropped, Lovely Day by C&C Music Factory - nearly wet myself!!! (his first UK gig as well..)

2. Nightmares on Wax (Kevin & George) @ The Warehouse, Leeds, 1989 - dropping the promo of 808 State - Pacific State straight after Nude Photo by Rhythym is Rhythym. The crowd went nuts, and they went into full on rewind on the intro, scratching on the first beat and screeming on the mic, "This is The Warehouse track..." Rewind about six times before we got the full track!!!

3. Lost in Space, Leeds, 1989, the very first illegal party held in a huge marque on the edge of the M62 - the police busted it after two hours & we made the front pages of the paper with our very first outdoor acid house party. DJ Steve Williams(Tracks Records, Warrington) in control until he got arrested.

4. Any given Friday at the Hacienda, Manchester, 1989-91.

5. Tribal Gathering 1997, Kraftwerk, Masters at Work doing their 4 decks and two mixers combo, Daft Punk playing on of their first sets (Disco),

****************just missing out**********

smile.gif Dave Seaman, playing house & hip-hop in my local pub every week, 1986.

smile.gif Sasha, playing to 100 people every WEdnesday at Ricky's in Leeds, 1989, he played house and he was damn good !!!

1. Warehouse moments, in complete darkness, when Frankie would overlay his speeding locomotive sound effect with train whistle. It would pan from one side of the room to the other, and you'd swear a train just came through that room!

2. Leaving the house at 2:00 a.m., driving down to the Power Plant, then standing in line, all with a wind chill of 80 degrees below zero! Then getting inside and finding it warm and packed, with "Welcome to the Pleasuredome" hittin' like no tommorow.

3. Battle of the DJs at The Loft (Chicago) in 1980. Not so much for my 2nd place finish, but for the great music played that night by all, especially the winner, Ben Perez. Ben hit us with TSOB, Su-Ku-Leu/Mother Africa, Paul Lewis' Girl, You Need, and Sing, Sing, Sing, among others. Call them the "same 30" now, but this was 1980!

4. Spinning at The Loft when we had to cut off admission, and the crowd outside helped themselves to a ladder from the Fire Dept. across the street and started coming in The Loft's 2nd floor windows!

5. Playing Le Passage last July 4 with my old DJ partners. Chosen Few reunion and a great vibe in the place.

February 2002, ambasada gavioli, izola, slovenia. David morales. This club is right on the sea and the triple border of Croatia and Italy. Good mixed crowd. David spun for six hours, lots of classics. he would keep it vocal for about an hour, and then go hard. Green velvet's la la land was perhaps the biggest hit of the night, the crowd freaked. I realized what clubbing was all about when he ended an hour of hard, dark tribal stuff with kings of Tommorow, "finally". I will never forget how all the girls were screaming out the lyrics, some even crying. he followed that up with CeCe peniston's finally, and I also never will forget how all that was left playing of Kot's finally was the bass, when the bright piano of CeCe's just ran over it like a flood. and then "meeting mister right...". that was when i lost it. jsut think of the two songs together, and the message. it mazy be simplistic, bout in a dark disco at five in the morning, it was so beautiful and perfect.
