I have been asked to dance to "Amazing Grace" at a memorial service for a colleague in a couple of weeks and I am looking for an interesting recording. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

i think i saw celene dion or was that michael bolton, can't tell those apart. seriously, i would stick with the traditional, mahalia, aretha, albertina, cause your dance will be the focus

Check out the Areatha Franklin version. It's on her gospel lp from the early 70's.I know it has Mary don't you weep. The lp title may actually be Amazing Grace.

thanks though, I had managed to forget about Aretha and have so far only found Mahalia in the mess that is my recently moved semi-unpacked life...

I danced up until I got pregnant with my daughter Brandy. One of the songs I danced to was on that album "Oh Mary Don't You Weep." Everytime I hear that song I get excited & try to remember the routine.

The Aretha Franklin live version is on the live album with James Cleveland and the Southern California Community Choir.
In addition to Mahalia Jackson and Albertina Walker, Dorothy Love Coates has a good version...as far as groups, you have the 5 Blind Boys from Alabama, the Caravans, Fairfield Four and the Dixie Hummingbirds.
Personally I would go with the Aretha version because of the slow tempo and her ad-libs; I think it will lend nicely to dance. Her version is around 10 minutes long, so it may require editing.
