Hey DHP. Hoping some of ya'll could help me out with this one:

I'm trying to get into recording mixes from my stereo system directly into my notebook computer, but I keep getting recordings that are "fuzzed out" and overwhelmed by background noise. Both my decks are properly grounded, so no trouble there. My mixer is not top-of-the-line by any means, though that shouldn't matter should it? I've done this before on friend's equipment, but didn't encounter this problem.

The connection from digital to analog is basic as it gets: a "Y" RCA with the male RCAs going into the "rec" outputs of my mixer, and the 1/8 end leading to the mic line-in on my computer. I'm using Real Jukebox so maybe that's the issue.

I am open to any/all tips here, so many many thanks in advance.

You may be sending too hot of a signal to your computer. On my laptop, I need to set the "Line In" recording level incredibly low to avoid distortion.

If you're on a PC, double click on the speaker icon in the lower right hand corner of your screen. A window for "volume control" should pop up. Go to the options menu, choose "properties".
switch the "adjust volume" selection from "Playback" to "Recording", then hit the "OK" button. A new, smaller window should open up which has a fader for the "Line In" level. Bring this way down and see if this helps.

Adjust the recording levels on your PC by using the "Line in" levels within the "Volume Control" settings.

On my PC, I usually have every output and input with the exception of "Line in" and "Main Volume" controls set to "Mute".

You may need to adjust the volume control on your mixer to compensate with the "input" levels on your PC.

Peace

Fantastic! Thanks for the help ya'll...now um...any tips on tracking CDs? Like I mentioned, I use Real Audio Jukebox, and I'm experimenting with MusicMatch.
