Jamie,

Can you let me know if Frankie Knuckles is playing weekly at Cielo - i am coming over from the UK in a month or so, but will only be in town from Sunday 16 through to Tuesday 18th Nov.
If he got a weekly residency i will definently go.

Cheers

Yo! The staff at this spot is outta their mind. Treatin people like they're frickin cattle and shit. I meant the place is in the meat-packing distrcit, but gimme a break.

As for the $8 beers, what can I tell ya? There are plenty of other, lessor places with far inferior tunes charging that much and more.

Have you ever bought a popsicle in St. John's? Frickin $4!! I remember when they were 35 cents! Welcome to the island life my friend.

All joking aside, I can attest to SERIOUS bouncer issues up in there, they have got to get it together before I return so I look forward to reading the input here and that it has somehow improved.

Here is an open letter I received in email yesterday. I pretty much had a similar experience on a different night when I went to FK's party to see U-Roy and I friggin' paid at the door and paid at the bar...not cute at all. I thoroughly enjoyed what FK is doing with the "dub", was nutz about the opportunity to hear U-Roy and am pissed that I was treated so miserably by the club's hired staff. I resent being put in the position of having to decide between supporting someone whom I respect and admire or submit myself to some pretty humiliating treatment.

Here is the email I received:

To All:

Last night (11/19) I headed down to Club Cielo in the meatpacking district to attend a party sponsored by West End Records. West End President and Blaze founder Kevin Hedge was the DJ.

In addition to printing up hard copies of flyers for the party, which were distributed in various locations around the city, West End Records also sent out an e-mail to their distribution list inviting everyone to come down and support what was billed as the initial party in a monthly series. The e-mail indicated that the party was free and that it was sponsored by West End.

The flyer listed the starting time as 9 p.m. I arrived at the club around 10 p.m., in the pouring rain, only to be informed by the woman at the door that the club was not yet open and that the starting time listed on the flyer was an error. Rather than standing out in the cold and rain, I walked down to a restaurant on the corner of 9th Avenue and had a drink, and returned to the club around 10:30.

At this point the woman at the door informed that the club was now open, but she asked whose guest list I was on. I informed her that I had been invited by Kevin Hedge to the party, that the party was supposed to be free, and that the flyer and the e-mail made NO reference whatsoever to the need to present an invitation or to be on any guest list.

At this point, a French guy who was also working the door informed me that I needed to be on someone's guest list in order to enter the club, and a bouncer stepped in to tell me that the guest list was necessary in order to make sure that the limited capacity of the club wasn't overwhelmed. I informed them that there wasn't supposed to BE any guest list (especially as the party was FREE), that I had received an e-mail inviting me to the party, and that, since the club had only opened its doors a few minutes before, it was highly unlikely that the capacity had already been reached.

Apparently something about my attitude upset the French guy, because he indicated that he didn't think he was going to permit me inside the club because I was starting to get pissed off. I explained my frustration about the belated starting time, the weather and the fact that the e-mail and flyer didn't indicate ANYTHING about needing to be on someone's guest list for the party. I gave him my business card, asked him to show it to Kevin and let Kevin decide if I could be permitted to enter the club.

After I calmed down a bit, I was finally let into the club. There were maybe 15 people inside at that point. I went to the DJ booth, immediately told Kevin what had happened at the door, and his reponse was "but there IS no guest list." He thanked me for telling him about the problem and also said he would speak to the people at the door and straighten the problem out.

Those of you who have been to Club Cielo know exactly what the place is all about. I have been there twice before, for Francois' Monday night Deep Space party, and found the staff singularly unpleasant BOTH times. You are forced to check all bags and coats (the last time I was there I had to spend 20 minutes looking for my own bag and coat in the coatroom - nice), and the security staff are a bunch of rude, oversized thugs. In addition, the tiny sunken dancefloor makes it clear that music and dancing were the LAST consideration in building the club, which is more appropriately used as a lounge for the Eurotrash wannabes whom the club hopes will come in and buy overpriced drinks. Dancing doesn't support this club - BOOZE does. Once again, undergound dance music and tired, trendy commercial clubs don't mix. (Union Square Ballroom, anyone?)

Even though Kevin had told me the problem had been straightened out, a friend of mine who had just arrived told me she also had to deal with exactly the same bullshit attitude from the French asshole at the door. Apparently the door staff weren't impressed with how some of Kevin's guests were dressed for the party. When I left the party a little after midnight, I mentioned to the French guy at the door that I understood that Kevin had spoken to him about the problems at the door. This guy lied right to my face, saying "No, he never said anything. He's playing music. You can't expect him to take care of everything. He probably just told you that to make you feel better."

Lying, smarmy fuck.

You guys can all do what you please, but you can be sure that I will NEVER set foot in that tired-ass place again. When will the people who promote these parties realize that the very community that has been supporting this scene for years will not tolerate this kind of discrimination and mistreatment by these club assholes. Period. I've been doing this for too many years to put up with any more of this bullshit. I just don't have the energy.

Feel free to contact me if you have any thoughts or comments about this situation. Also feel free to re-post this e-mail if you so desire.

Peace,

David Leifer

be happy there is an intimate club in NYC with a slamming sound system, nice (albeit small) dancefloor, super cool lights, modern AND comfortable design, a smoking patio, sizeable and clean bathrooms, a well-stocked bar, a fairly open-minded musical crowd...should i go on?

live and let live...i love cielo. personally i hope this club continues to book good MUSIC events, but the suck-ass attitude of so many "house heads" may turn Cielo's staff against people from this scene. watch what you say...too many "complainers" from the house scene and before you know it, all these events are homeless and the same people griping about how "poorly" they were treated at Cielo are now crying about how Cielo doesn't support "the scene" anymore...

Don't get it twisted, this is NOT a boycott, this is feedback. I am more than hopeful that things can change and hope for it, I WANT TO GO BACK TO FK's PARTY!! And the person who posted the letter has been there 3 times, how many times is enough for you to get shit on and finally open your mouth up about it?

They could be big headed cretins for all I care, a little common courtesy would go a long way. Putting one of these losers on a door is anathema. If this friggin new cabaret law passes they plan to put in one security guard for every friggin 50 people up in a joint! You go to a party with 500 people and you got more bouncers up in there than I wanna see in a lifetime. You wanna talk about the bar "owners" crying poverty? What are they gonna say when they have to pay an army of these stellar folks? Gimme one Chuckie for every 100 of these guys,,,you just can't put a dollar value on a smile and congeniality when you are walking in to an establishment.

I ain't boycottin shit, but when I went there last night for Roger S after having been there twice in the past, Stefan the door bitch, gave me major attittude talking about capacity this and that. All this while letting in all his bitch-ass euro faggot ass motherfuckin friends. Yo what kinda bullshit is that?!

This place is hot with a dope system and nice decor, but the attitude is a HHHHHUUUUUGGGGGGEEEEE TURNOFF and makes people like me never want to go back.

Attitudes like that make me wanna stay at home. And please, don't tell me I don't spend money because you don't know me and you ain't my wallet. It just so happens that true househeads don't drink very much so the scene is dependent on euro trash to come out. Let me tell you something. It should be the euro-trash that is made to stand outside with their motherfuckin dick in their hands!!

While I certainly prefer the Shelters and Duplexx's and 667's of this world, we all know that most clubs keep their door tight. Always have. Always will. We can choose not to support them, or we can work within that system becuz we appreciate that they are choosing to make their swanky new club a house venue despite the fact that they could make twice as much money playing wack hard-house or hip hop.

I, for one, adjust my dress for whatever venue I attend. It's not that big of a deal. Being kinda lazy, and having done this clubbing thing for a long time now, that usually means I'll end up at the spot with the more relaxed door policy. Nevertheless, I know that when I do go to those more upscale spots I need to step up my game a little bit. I don't show up to Shelter in a lime-green Steve Harvey suit, but I don't show up at Nobu in sweatpants and baby-powder-encrusted sneakers either. I don't object to clubs keeping their door tight. I do object to people being assholes. The two don't have to go hand in hand. It seems like Cielo needs to drop a few assholes from the staff and some folks need to drop their entitlement issues.

I've been pretty lucky with Cielo - primarily because I'm familiar with Nicholas as well as with a few of the bouncers who've worked at venues I've done events at in the past ... BUT there's no denying that there are attitude issues there.

In general, I stay away from trendy "hot" spots for just these reasons. I do not, however, boycott of businesses that are at least TRYING to feature good music and a good system. They have bills to pay and I'm not gonna hate on them for recognizing that if they don't pay the bills this month, there will be no club next month. Most trendy spots are gonna be more difficult to get into and have more expensive drinks & coat checks - that's the way of the world ...

They have Francois, Kevin, Frankie, Tedd and a variety of other top-notch DJs there because they (as opposed to most of the small spots in the city) can afford to -- that Eurotrash element should be thanked for picking up the tab so that we can enjoy such great music.

If you want a place that's less drama, may I suggest CHATEAU NOIR or any of the other, smaller events at smaller venues. It's not like there isn't a plethora of great, small, no-drama parties almost every night of the week in NYC, and we should feel lucky to have so many options when a few years ago there were none.

In regards to the topic addressed in this thread, and our weekly Monday night party 'Deep Space' (http://www.deepspacenyc.com/index.php).

The one thing that should be mentioned is that when we organize our event there, we most certainly have a member of our staff at the door, greeting people and so on. The club provides the management, security and bar staff; it also sets all public safety procedures.

We cannot speak for what is done there on other nights, but from the beginning, our event was planned with ease of access in mind, and you can be assured that under no circumstances would someone be turned away at the door on a Monday night based on any factor other than if the club was over its legal capacity, or the person(s) appear intoxicated or a threat to others. We'd like to quote from what is printed on our flyers: "Deep Space, no dress code, just an open mind"

Regarding the coats&bags issue, the venue being small, their policy is that things must be checked to conserve precious space for EVERYONE. We know how annoying it can be to not be able to sit down because of a pile of coats occupying the seat! For our special night, Cielo has agreed to charge only $1.00 per customer for all checked items, as opposed to other clubs that regularly charge $2-$3 per item! This is more than fair. And yes, we do apologize for the coat check line. This issue is being addressed.

As it stands, there isn't one day when I wake up and don't thank Cielo (http://www.cieloclub.com/main.htm) for giving us the chance to have 'Deep Space' (http://www.deepspacenyc.com/index.php) there on Monday nights.

Pundits may debate all day long the merits of this or that, but at the end of the day, I don't realistically know of any other organization in the city that would give us a similar venue where we have so far presented the likes of U-Roy, Meshell Ndegeocello, Mutabaruka, Sidestepper, Zapology, along with the weekly music policy we've set. Kick-ass sound system, comfortable setting, and even a smokatorium™ !!

My very special thanks to Cielo for allowing 'Deep Space' to exist, party producer Erica Ruben for all that she does every week to make all of this happen smoothly, as well as the rest of the Deep Space staff and family, Jonesy, Andrea, Joann, Ariel and Tomoko.
