Apparently there will be an announcement this afternoon at the Knitting Factory where the Dept of Consumer Affairs is going to put forth a proposal to abolish the cabaret laws.

Also, at a City Council meeting last evening NY factory owners were complaining about the incessant (sp?) turning of factory space into residential lofts; as it is killing the blue collar jobs that many in this city depend on. The conversions are forcing many small manufactoring companies to flee the City, this in addition to being unable to stay competitive with the rising rents.

These two stories are linked because the more former commercial spaces that are turned residential means less areas for future clubs to open and more stress on current clubs, bars, and lounges to control their noise levels, etc.

Small rays of light....

Thank god the cabaret law is changing, though the attitude of the city towards clubs is truly strange. At the public hearing in the Spring, it was clear that the city felt this incessant need to mainatin some legal stronghold on clubs. They kept talking about how bad the current law was, and that they needed to develop new ones to replace it, as if there weren't already laws on the books addressing issues of public gathering. I suppose everything has to be controlled to a degree, but it seemed rooted in an ungrounded fear. It's amazing how that Happyland fire effected nightlife and the attitudes toward clubs by city officials.

I know it's apples and oranges, but...

Abolition of cabaret laws will NOT slow down rent hikes. And it won't slow down residential loft/condo building. It seems that if you open up a club anywhere, you have to find a way to pay the bills (rent, mortgage).

Yes, the factory complaints and the caberet laws are linked. But like I said, once the laws are abolished, there will be other ways to keep clubs from thriving (zoning, high rents, insurance issues, etc.).
