one of my favorite writers, Ernest Hemingway, actually participated in the Spanish civil war because he believed in his cause and felt it was less than manly to write about it and not go experience it

The pen is mightier than the sword. I just wrote a scathing letter to our French and German ambassadors.

I'm sorry, I don't understand....to the French and German ambassadors to the UN, or to the US' diplomats to these countries? What did you say?

Joined the US Army during the Gulf War...
Did 6 years active duty.
I didn't end up seeing any action because of a ruling the Army made while I was in AIT but I got issued all my desert gear etc etc and some of the people who graduated in the class ahead of me went to Kuwait so it came close.
To be honest, I don't know how much of that was related to any real "stance" on the war per say and I've never been a blind patriot in the typical sense but sometimes ya gotta do what you gotta do. At the time, that war made more sense to me than the wars going on on our own streets....
Peace

I find the protesters that are saying, " I hope the Iraqis win" more appaling. Wishing harm to come to the servicemen that are leaving their families to go fight! Almost makes me want to buy a sniper rifle.

SSG(P) Rudolph Jordan US Army 1987 - 1999true, some people do get this angry at how the US govt controllers are handling things, but it's obvious to me that wanting anyone to suffer just because i can't get my way or have people see things as i see it is BS.
it'd be nice if all sides just stopped to think about what they were doing, but people w/ "evil" intentions seem never to rest. always trying to conquer, hurt or steal from their neighbors, always trying to control the world.
to say that it's about savagery everywhere in the world the US or Britain (or in the past, Spain) aren't is BS especially when historically, some European dominators (not ALL Europeans) were and still are battling for 'world' supremacy. but this is the same anywhere people go as Bold Soul pointed out yesterday.
..so if the US didn't have guns enough to fight the evildoing forces of the Saddams of the world, would they be jumping in so quickly to do so? are international bankers and the U$ just trying to help themselves by making it look like they're trying to help other nations?
now, is there a person in this forum who wants to insist that they are themselves too old for military service but if they could, they'd go to Baghdad and personally catch Saddam Hussein? there usually is one.
i was watching Connie Chung earlier and she was talking to Charlie Daniels (The Charlie Daniels Band, Louisiana Saturday Night) who was talking pro-war shit and basically saying that the other celebrities are panzies for misleading people about the "facts" of why the US govt is in(terested) in Iraq. i've been seeing more evil-celebrity pro-war interviews as of late.

Or do you think they'll be saddened by the fact that you are wrapped up in the US administarations lies and you've never questioned anything past your own back door?
Your letter means nothing, your country is not the world's police force, go back to sleep but have a Coke and a smile first!!!

You all sound like the two white guys in my office from Houston who are blind racist mofo, talking about the Marine Corp & Navy, talking sh|t about black people - big deal, how much of man are you fighting for the world's largest super power anyway? Real tough guy, with all them weapons!!!
Big deal!
It's like turning up for a playground fight with a clocked Uzi - big man, go kill some Iraqis with your big gun in the name of the world..While the whole world chokes at your administration's sheer audacity, kicking sand in anyone's face that don't give you their lunch money..
How would you feel if the whole world piled into the US asking for a regime change?
Asking for the US's weapons?
Requesting to see every document from every mofo shady deal your govt has pulled?
I want the US to be accountable!!
Your fighting for democracy, but you are taking the world's democracy away with a sick ass govt backed by simple minded mofo's that have never stepped out of their own backyard appart from having some F16's to back them up - big man!
If that was the situation I'd be with Hemmingway, I'd be in the US liberating the WORLD from the real terror!!!! graemlins/cussing.gif
I'm sorry if your buddies died, that's really sick, especially as the warmongers like Rumsfeld will only see this war on CNN - it is the simple & expendable mofo's like the two guys at my work (white bigotted southies) or the Blackman that will always lay it on the line the US govt and for what? For a better life, you tell me, did your life improve after you fought for Amerikkka?
Yeah you got cheep gas and overturned another socialist leaning democracy, have yourself a bud, drag on a Marlboro, you did a good thing!

I hope no one says Hemmingway was a coward because he killed himself. Life's greatest battle is with yourself.

What I was saying was that if there was a global call to arms to hold the US accountable I'd be parachuting onto Capitol Hill in a flash and so would Hemmingway!

something neat you can do, engage them--as them if/why they are racist.
i had to work w/ a big fat dude once and we got to talking a couple of times. he liked safaris and sitting his fat ass on top of the lorrie shooting at African animals--i have no problem with this, it's just he was, to me, a thankless and haughty "white american" dude and this urked me personally.
he also felt the nuking of Japan was necessary to stop the war which got me as mad as you seem to be. i tried to explain to him that if the US was so big and bad they would have stormed the island like they did Europe (supposedly, Truman was convinced that killing civilians was going to save US lives. a true american hero)
maybe try not to be disturbed by such stuff, as disturbing as it might seem.
-----------------------------
Battle of Midway stuff (maybe it was about "Pearl Harbor", maybe it was about certain nations keeping the "Nips" away from their hoes--uh, bitches--sorry, colonies..their rightful property)
http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq81-1.htm
Hiroshima: was it necessary?--Dwight D. Eisenhower"...the Japanese were ready to surrender and it wasn't necessary to hit them with that awful thing."
- Ike on Ike, Newsweek, 11/11/63 (i'm assuming this quote is used in the right context)
http://www.doug-long.com/
reading the Stimson diary pages, it seems the US was ready to nuke somebody as soon as August 1, 1945, right after the successful tests of July 16, 1945--2 weeks logistical prep after getting their new toy.
--------------------------------------------
Truman doesn't respect Japanese sovereignty, but unlike George Bush, he respects 'Kyoto'...they both like big bombs
--------------------------------------------------
"This may include a constitutional monarchy under the present dynasty if it be shown to the complete satisfaction of the world that such a government will never again aspire to aggression."
That sentence was removed by President Truman and Sec. of State Byrnes before the Potsdam Proclamation was sent to Japan. A copy of Stimson's original version can be found in the latter part of www.nuclearfiles.org/docs/1945/450702-stimson-draft.html (http://www.nuclearfiles.org/docs/1945/450702-stimson-draft.html) at the excellent Nuclear Files web site.]
"We had a few words more about the S-1 program, and I again gave him my reasons for eliminating one of the proposed targets [Kyoto]. He again reiterated with the utmost emphasis his own concurring belief on that subject, and he was particularly emphatic in agreeing with my suggestion that if elimination was not done, the bitterness which would be caused by such a wanton act [a-bombing Kyoto, Japan's cultural center] might make it impossible during the long post-war period to reconcile the Japanese to us in that area rather than to the Russians. It might thus, I pointed out, be the means of preventing what our policy demanded, namely a sympathetic Japan to the United States in case there should be any aggression by Russia in Manchuria [which Russia was about to invade, as part of the Yalta Conference agreement with the U.S. and Great Britain]."
[Stimson had been excluded from the Potsdam Conference meetings, and with the a-bomb schedule set he felt his usefulness at the conference was over. In a letter to his wife on July 24, Stimson summarized his feelings about his limited role:]
"The President has been uniformly kind and accessible; I see him every morning without any difficulty and he has been greatly delighted with the [atomic bomb] news I have been able to give him... but not being at the formal meetings has taken away the excitement which usually stimulates such an occasion, and I have no direct responsibility for the carrying on of the business." (Henry Lewis Stimson Papers, Yale University Library, New Haven, Conn., microfilm reel 112).
