Without a doubt the DJ is the focal point of dance culture. And as such carry a tremendous responsibility and at the same time incredible power. Power to make things better or make things worse. I read a post on this forum were a DJ poignantly described feeling in a “funk over the scene”. I felt like he was really saying, “I feel powerless to change things”. Why is that so? How could that be when it’s the DJ who sets the tone and influences the choices people make.
A club becomes merely an empty room without the DJ and the people. Which club owner in his right mind desires to or can afford to open an empty room night after night? And which DJ desires to slip into a “funk” because the scene “sucks” for lack of opportunity.
It’s like having the pieces of a jigsaw strewn on the table. All we have to do is put the pieces together. But before that can happen each piece has to be studied to see how and where it fits.
When the DJ, dance crowd, promoter and club owner are properly aligned a wonderful and brilliant light will shine.
