Greetings Folks,
I hear folks talk about emphasizing specifics frequencies to have things "sit well in the mix." Can someone explain to me how this is done on, for example, Reason or Logic 8? Also, I hear a lot about EQ'ing and filtering. I know this is all related but I'm having a HUGE disconnect between what people say and how to actually DO IT!
Any help is greatly appreciated:respent:

for the record , in order to get a good idea on E.Q balancing for a mix .
rule #1 play the music in mono , when e.q , this take away all sound illusion , reverb, delay etc, depending on your sound source your speaks play a important role , if you have good monitors ,this will help seriously , this is important because what u hear is not usually what u get. some speaker color the sound while some take away from it so having good speakers help, when u e.q start out flat, or i call natural sound state , hear what is needed then take from there , low& mid frequency make a mix sound rich , because this is the range most instrument play , 150-750 hrz , the vocal range is also within that ball park .i usually dont push for too much low or high's, i add just enough to complete the sound , my advise is u just need to play around with the E.Q to get the sound your looking for, u'll get it with time . i learn alot by doing it that way:thumbsup:

Thank you. I appreciate the advice. Is there any more!?!?!?!? My core question has not been answered yet.
making track elements "sit well in the mix"
how filtering plays a part in this and how it is actually done (in Logic or Reason)
resources that explain this
Thank you all in advance!!!!!

What I always do, when i start mixing with recorded tracks =
Use a notch filter (preset) or take parametric EQ and create yourself a notch.

Boost them all the way up and slide it over the entire freqband. You will hear somewhere in the freq.band it will sound harsch or resonating. stop there and take it all out.
When you've done this on every track your entire mix will sounds cleaner
This is some basic stuff I learned to do... there is a lot more.
