Just wondering about your musical inclinations.
Did you take any music lessons as a kid or are you taking any now? (instruments, voice, theory classes, etc.)
Good experiences? Bad? Future aspirations? Funny stories?
No need to stick to those specific questions.
I just spin. But I want to play the keyboard...I'm inspired by Peter Daou.

Started playing the piano in 1983. Played by ear and began to take lessons in 1990. Took lessons for about 2 years, should've kept with it, but I kinda lost interest (teenage years).
I always wanted to produce, DJing and making mixtapes was an afterthought. Been working on a couple of projects as of late and hope to share them with some of you in the near future.
Peace

I've played Trombone all thru high school and 2 years afterwards. Sometimes I pick it up to see if I remember everything. I DO.
I have an Epiphone 335 DOT guitar. Took leesons for a year. Will be retaking lessons again.
I have a cheap Ibanez bass I play by ear from time to time.
Played piano as a kid and taught myself the drums......JMJ

i played the keyboard when i was young and gave it up
i also played the bugle for years and then the side drum in a pipe band .
played the guitar for 9 years and still play it occasionly.
just left my phycadelic indie rock band after 5 years of gigging to take up my true love of House(djing and hopefully producing soon).
wil be starting to get my shiet together soon and hopefully take all that knowledge and bang out sum tunes. :D
i played trumpet for about 5-6 years and piano for about 2 years when i was a kid. since i've been making and putting out music in the last few years i have taken a few piano lessons here and there up until last year when i found a great teacher. now i've put my production to the side for a while and spend all that time (a few hours a day at least with at least 1 full day sessions a week) learning the piano. it's been great. i got bored with my limitations as a producer and needed to find new ways to change things up. i just started using some things i've learned and it's a new thing altogether. transposing riffs and basslines to new keys, writing new melodies. my soloing ain't there yet but someday... in any case, it's definately helping my ability to express what i want in music. it's just a steep learning curve.

long ago and far away...
I took piano for maybe a year when I was about 7. I think I just ended up losing interest, like kids do.
One day, when I was about 9, I saw the school orchestra practicing in the auditorium. For some reason, I was fascinated by the way all the violinists' bows were going up and down in unison. I started bugging my mom for violin lessons. From the age of 9 til about 17, I played the violin. I was actually pretty good (not child prodigy good) and played in All County and All State orchestras in Jr. High and High school. (my shining moments in life)
Then I got cool...or rather, I felt like I had to get cool. I got tired of getting stress from other kids when I would get on the bus with my violin. Kids can be some mean-ass mofos, especially when you don't stick to the accepted program. Hmmm...replace "Kids" with "People".
During the violin stint, I also took up saxophone for a couple of years, around the age of 13. Hated it. My teacher, who was in a local and popular jazz band, was not a good teacher. He belittled me instead of uplifting me. I don't learn well in those sort of circumstances.
I want to take violin up again as well as piano, but along with the dozens of other goals and aspirations, I'm not sure where I'd find the time.
Oh yeah...voice lessons would be cool. I wouldn't mind also doing some voice-over stuff a la James Earl Jones.

alto saxophone, guitar (i was the worst at that), clarinet, and 10 years of classical piano
i still play on the piano when i find the time (and $) to go over to one of the schools and rent a room .. once a month most, probably less :(
i enjoy singing along when i play, but i really shouldn't be .. definitely not if anyone is in ear shot ... 254 people tried out for middle school choir, 250 made it. not me.

Studied piano from grade one to four. I hated it, mostly cause I wanted play drums like my dad.
Learned to play the sax at 12. Played all through high school. I picked up the guitar at around 14. Used to spend hours alone in my room playing over my favorite records. I dabbled with the bass guitar fairly regularly back then too.
I kind of lost interest in playing instruments when I bought turntables, although I did teach my self some basic drum beats on my roomates kit 5 or 6 years ago.....and I still have a keyboard which I use all the time for making basslines.
Hoping one day my dad & I can have a place to play, he's one hell of a drummer and easily could have done that if he had not decided to be a career soldier.

hey darrow! i've tried to play everything from piano and bass guitar to west african percussion (though i am working on djembe still, and catching on quite well!).
well i can report that i finally found my instrument! it is the guiro. a small percussion instrument popularized in mexico and cuba especially.
for those who don't know, it is a long, hollow wooden block with ridges running horizontally from top to bottom. this ridges are struck or rubbed with a much smaller wooden stick called a pua. WAR has a lot of guiro in their music.
i love the guiro! i play with it while i am mixing smile.gif

It is a hollowed out gourd, with cut out ridges in them. I want a cuica. You usually hear in Brazilian Music and P-Funk Music.

My guiro is the Mexican variety (I suspect because it is shaped like a fish!) but I would love to find others. I love cuicas too! I love all little drums...the smaller the better. I have some derbukas from Morocco, too, and those are sweet graemlins/beerchug.gif
I just like imagining myself to be the next Airto graemlins/rofl.gif but it's really just loads of fun to play a little percussion...especially behind house beats.

Derbukas are nice. I'm trying to go to Morocco with my wife next year. Her friends purchase instruments over there for less than $20. Sometimes less than $10. When they see a cat is not Moroccan(and don't speak Arabic)they throw a $30 price tag on instruments. All I do is collect percussive toys. When I get there I will buy these things called Garagab.
Garagab(Morocco): metal clackers resembling double castanets. They are held two in each hand. Commonly used by Gnawa performers, particularly on festive occasions.

This January would be nine years on the electric bass. Had a couple of lessions here and there, but mainly self-taught.
My future goal is to learn upright. Peace.

piano lessons forever. i hated piano. couldn't eek enough expression out of it.
saxaphone was my instrement of choice. alto was good, but i lusted after tenor. was in grand shape until it was stolen by my next door neightbor and fenced. With it went my continued journey with sax.
thank god i took voice lessons, no one is gonna steal your voice!
now i play the computer. but it's windows, so I keep thinking BillyG is gonna reach out and reclaim all the work I have on that harddrive of mine. Or worse, he'll kill it off. Gotta get money for a MAC....
