View Full Version : The Chicago Scene. Thinking "Out of the box"

Which Chicago suburb do you think would be conducive to a house venue to augment the struggling scene here in Chicago?
Location is a strong consideration as well as the communities tolerance in letting urban party goers invade their territory.
Obviously it would have to be a predominately black 'burb for race reasons. The police and city officials would have to be tolerant as well.
A few that come to mind are:
1.Dolton
2.Maywood
3.Riverdale
4.Phoenix
Not many to choose from. But house may need a new home away from the city.

Harvey
Homewood
Chicago Heights
Calumet City
Dixmoor
Lansing
These are predominantly Black......
I always thought the 'Burbs would be a good breeding ground.......

Usually there is a community division at most police stations....perhaps establishing a rapport with them would be helpful. This is not to say that you haven't. It is just a thought. I have done this myself with the PD/FD....also because I do community work anyway, it all falls into place.

I wanted to do something @ Club Blue/Harvey (The former 50 yardline). Nice spot, but the management(same folks own it, but changed the name) over priced the joint and no one wants to rent it out so its a ghost town and its closes @ 1am when it can stay open till 4am.........
JMJ would be a good resource...he used to do all the suburban parties back in the day out south......

During high school, I use to do a lot of parties in Maywood (I went to school at Proviso West and we lived in Melrose Park for a minute).
You might also consider Bellwood. It's predomintly black & mexican suburb. I've done parties there as well and the responce to house music (back in the late eighties early ninties) was really good.
Great Idea by the way. There are a lot of heads out there in the suburbs. Good Luck.

I don't know if it would fly there. Great location but the people and officials may not go for it. I can't think of any known venues that currently exist in SH

I was born in Harvey and raised in Robbins. My father owns a spot called Manny's Blue Room. One things that you have to consider is people might support the music if it is too unfamliar to them. Also folks might not come from the city because it is too far. You have a lot more freedom in the suburbs but the support might not be there. I started doing events in Harvey in 1984, but things have changed. Quality dance music is not that present out there. Do some market testing before you try it. Peace

JMJ would be a good resource...he used to do all the suburban parties back in the day out south...... You are correct, JM3. I lived and played out there for a long time. The biggest problem would be getting people to come down from the city. It's always been that way, although I wouldn't consider that a problem, because there's still plenty of people into the music out that way, plus you have to consider all the people that have moved south from Chicago in the last 15 years. Harvey, Dolton, or Cal City would be your best bet due to their close proximity to Chicago. Stay away from Dixmoor.....JMJ

If you want to do a "ground up" thing there is a Bar that used to be on Dolton Av/ State Road right off the Bishop/Ford Expy (90/94). Was called Dom Pierres. Its kinda small but stating out it could be pretty nice......
Also I have a few more suggestions.....
Terry PM me your info........
