"You've Got To Have Freedom" was originally on the the album "Journey to the One" released in 1980 I think. It is in many ways more accessible than much other Pharoah Sanders. The albums "Karma" and "Thembi" are my life favorites. They both have very free stretches balanced by exquisitely lyrical stretches. I cannot say there is anything that I have heard that I really can't get into. I must also add that every time I have heard him live it has been been soul opening and deeply moving for me...

yeah, "journey to the one" is a double album that was available as a re-press not long ago. it's quite versatile from fairly middle-of-the-road be-bop and swinging stuff to his more freeflowing coltrane inspired sound.
funnily i played that track last saturday to a crowd that usually has a problem to follow if i stray away from 4/4. i intended to drop Lonnie Liston Smith - Everybody get down (it's time for world peace) but couldnt find it quick enough. amazingly the crowd loved "you've got to have freedom"

cheers,
constantin

I love the album "save my children" with songs like "midnight in berkeley square", "jewels of love" and "the ancient sounds".

As you know E! has been airing the early SNL's and there was one from 1978 where I believe Pharoh was jamming with Taj Mahal. That was electric! Peace.

Check him live before you die. Anyone who dismisses the link between spirituality and music would be schooled.

It's really about the Impulse recordings:

Tauhid
Karma
Jewels of Thought
Deaf, Dumb, and Blind
Thembi
Village of the Pharoahs
Black Unity
Live at the East
Wisdom Through Music
& Elevation
Love in Us All

And then everything else. Impulse has only gotten around to reissuing a few of these. Get the original vinyl off eBay if you have to. The only recording I have heard him on since the early 70's that can touch these is his spot on Frankilin Kiermeyer's "Soloman's Daughter." That shit will blow your mind. If you can find the CD reissue of Larry Young's "Lawrence of Newark"(1973), get it. Pharoah was still under contract with Impulse so he appears as "mystery guest." It's a great recording. Imagine Pharoah sitting in on a Bitch's Brew session.
