hey everyone, was wondering if u had the time to listen to this lil' mixset I recorded last weekend and maybe give me some feedback about it (I can handle negative criticism as long as its constructive ):
"EL TENDERO DEL BARRIO"
download here:
http://www.bino.be/djkuhn/kuhn%20-%20el%20tendero%20del%20barrio%20mix.mp3
I tried to put in some latin and afro house influences - nice to study by if I say so myself (I care for my fellow estudiantes).
give me a shoot on track id's . one thing thought the sound quality sux a bit cos there is this background hiss that u hear in the more silent breaks from time to time ...I need a new soundcard fast !

I'd listen to it, but I'd rather stream it than download it. The file is 40MB. Is there a way to listen to it without downloading?
I second that ..
I see a lot of names on your track list I enjoy so what up with the stream?

weird - this is the first site I've come across that actually prefers to have streamed stuff rather than download sets ....is it because you guys are all on slow connections ? I prefer mp3 over realaudio any time ! countless times realplayer crashed on me ! mp3 sets are better in quality as well, and easily archived...
but fair enough - I will encode and upload a realaudio version then for you guys ;) - 56k quality ?

I suppose you are the one on this forum that tries to make catchy posts and witty remarks - there is allways one of those on each board (usually it's easily traced back to some kind of youth trauma)

Lots of really good mixes on line. Why don't "you" say hello first b/4 posting mixes for everyone to listen to just how wonderful "your" mix is. There's so much stuff here to listen to. Perhaps after doing some of that, you would realize that perhaps (yes, perhaps) "your" not so good after all.
Happens to me everytime I listen to some of the heat up in here. A very humbling experience to say the least.

I see you just moved past the 10 year line of how long you've been mixing. Ddi you notice that you've broken out of the bix yet. or are yous still closely following the rules?
I'll give your mix a listen when I get home. I'm at work so can't really listen.

yes like lyot said, a big pile of 'ifs'...you got a lot of prejudice towards me, donnow why ?
I did introduce myself here allready and I did post here before
I have been lurking on this site for ages, over a year that I regurarly check stuff here.
I never thought I was any good , when did I EVER SAY THAT ? it was that part of ur post that annoyed me the most. you also seem to assume that I don't have any respect for the dj's and their sets on dhp ? excuse me ? do you know me ? don't think so ey ;) ...so less assuming about me ok.
for the record: I don't think I'm any good - that's part of (well most of) the reason why I posted this mix here - so you guys know what I lack in skills...and for you to maybe help me improve myself musically !
and also for the record I have the greatest respect for the DHP dj's.
mmmkay now tac ?

mmmkay now tac ? Dont sweat it man. If you want to share your music aint nothing wrong with that. It's just with so much music around already dont expect too much of a response if ya know what I mean. Posting a tracklist is the best way to get people interested though cuz then they might have a reason to check it out. smile.gif

Welcome to the board. Sometimes a mix ISN'T the best way to introduce yourself. Contribute to some of the discussions and get to know some of the characters here first. Throwing a mix at us from jumpstreet is like walking into a packed club and trying to bogart your way onto the tables during primetime. Just a suggestion....JMJ

I haven't had time to listen to your mix at work but I respect anyone that puts themselves out there for people to listen to. Keep it up and don't let nobody try to tell you different. If it does, in fact, suck, then DHP heads will let you know. That comes with the territory. Nevertheless, that doesn't mean you shouldn't post it. There is always somebody better and always somebody worse. Keep spreading music to any and all that will listen. peace.

I have respect for everybody here inwhat I am about to write:
Come on people!! Don't be so small minded!! its not like the guy is walking up to you in the middle of your set with a bag of records on his shoulder like, "Yo!! Im here from Who-ville and my name is Ladi Dadi, my friends just call me Ladi. I liketo party, I can get down. Cna I get on? Its my birthday ya know".
He took the time to do the mix, probably even bought the goddamn records that he played (no promos), took the time to post it - twice no less. Now listen and enjoy and don't pass judgement til at least the fourth song - OK?
Small mindedness leads to small results in life.
Now eskuhn (or whatever your name is) -
Nice first mix. Confident, nice vibe, good selection. I will post again later inthe mix t give you a better interpretation. And don't let these haters get you down. Do your thing!!
I'm only jealous because I have no idea how to post my own mix or else I woulda done this shit a long time ago!!
PM me to tell me how to do it!

thx houseaddict ! I dont mind what people wrote, it's really not a big deal (this is just the internet after all)
maybe it's handy for other people to know how to get mixes online, so why not write it here ?
first of all you'll need of course to connect your master or rec output of your mixer into the line-in of your computer's soundcard. I assume you know all that (if not tell so ;) ) .
then u need a programs to record of course, this could be cooledit, soundforge, wavelab,...
but I prefer this little proggy called 'total recorder' - I can email it to you if you wish (6oo kb or so). very handy and basic. test it a few times to see if you dont have any sound clipping, change levels till u are satisfied with the sound. record ur set, then u should have a huge WAV file (around 700 mb for 70 minutes) .
then you'll need to encode it into either MP3 (big filesize - no free hosts available) or Realaudio (smaller size, less quality, some free hosts).
if u have about 50 mb webspace that should be enough to host an mp3 mix of 70 mins at 96 kbps. you can use programs like 'audiocatalyst' or other mp3 encoding programs (I'm not sure about free programs though, sure there are around - if not try kazaa, not very legal thought)
the other choice is realaudio. you'll need a proggy called 'realproducer' which you can find at www.real.com (http://www.real.com) if you look hard enough - they hide their free versions there very carefully.
a 70 mins set encoded for 56k connections -music quality - shouldnt take up more than 16 or 17 mb
I know a free host for realaudio mixes, www.skoolhouse.com (http://www.skoolhouse.com) - just upload your realaudio file there and they make the special .ram file .
I'm sure there are more realaudio hosts, but this one was the one i liked the most.

PM me to tell me how to do it! He stated "What better way to introduce myself than with a mix". Some people corrected him saying that is not the best way. I agree. But then he said I have already introduced myself previously.??? So I got confused. Anyways I like when older members try to explain unwritten board etiquite(sp?) to new members. It helps keep the board in a balance.

If you'd given us a little foreplay we might have gone all the way with you, but as it stands, coming in with an MP3, we feel used. :(
However, by posting information on getting your mixes on the web, you are at least offering to sleep in the wet-patch ;)

just look at the playlist, if you like what you see, listen and comment. if not, don't listen.
i don't get this shit, how can people possibly complain about somebody doing his best to spread some music. he isn't promoting himself in a stupid way, or asking for needless attention.
he just made a mix and wants people to say what they think. don't mind some board etiquette, but why does it have to turn into musical snobbery?

i would say there may be a few exceptions but what i've experienced with young dj's is that after a certain age, unless they've been exposed to real club culture, their tastes change & they become bored with the current musical equivalent of their youth. people become jaded because they no longer feel it. that difficult stage in ones life where conditioning creeps in makes it harder for them to appreciate what is still good music.
case in point, everyone ragging on maw & blaze talking about the same old formula blah blah blah. everybody's looking for the next big thing & it's right under our noses. there are enough good records out there to keep this thing we call house moving forward, just not enough like minded people working for the same cause. it's like consolidation. people need to push certain records. there is a systematic way of doing things in order to create a demand. the fact that pools no longer are a vehicle of promotion for deep house makes it absolutely necessary for dj's to come together & work towards a common goal.
putting your own mix together is fine. but this is a way of life for many people who take this shit very seriously & sometimes instead of barking back, humility can be a blessing that can open up one's mind to true potential.

I feel something wrong about this thread..i don't know exactly what it is..maybe the fact that i keep telling to mates(rare soul fanatics and quite snobby) that the dance scene is not what we've got here in Italy but is something different
with love for the music and inclusive of all people that wants to do something...slowly i'm realizing that's not always so..
I agree that everyone can do that mix:everyone that knows at least quality new dance music(don't know
about classics or rarity as he doesen't drop anything old/rare in there..),that can handle TT and have the passion to take time to put toghether something.
It's clear that he wanted a sincere review of his work..if you want listen to it(i see there are lots of "beginners" here that maybe would like to hear from some of their peer..)and if you think that is no worth let it down ...
Being the DHP a place with a lot of klowledge wouldn't be nice and "cultural" a section(maybe
it's not done for web space reasons)where the new spinners can show their skills or lack of skill for a little time each and a section for the review of those mixes made by the the DHPers..i know there are other site where to post mix,but DHP is the perfect palce where history and present blends perfectly.

i don't get you on the conditioning part. having somewhat experienced this myself (i never understood the musical choice of most kids of my age, now and then), i'd likely think that the part where you realize the fact that there's a form of conditioning makes you reach deeper. but maybe that's also where the tricky part lies. the need to look for something else, and purposely trying to be different can be a conditioning on itself too. so the right thing to do is just to keep yourself open to the music, and separating the bad from the good, and not the 'mainstream' from the 'underground'. is this what you meant?

It's Friday, I agree with you all.
Just hold this thought, someone you never met before is invited to your house and they start ragging on your hi-fi playing what they want - it's not snobbery, it's just etiquette, you'd be a touch perturbed.
Anyway, it's not a big issue is it, no one's being snobby, we just like to get know people and when a mix gets posted, it should be a special thing for the player and the audience..
I'm going to listen up to this mix tonight :D

Hehe, Belgians stirring up the board, I like it. Haven't listened to the mix Elkuhn, but I bet I'll hear you play live in the next coming months, so I'll pass an honest judgment then. But just do your thing as you feel it, listen to opinions, but do what you like anyway, that keeps everyone happy.

Just finished listening to it, and I certainly like the vibe you create, but IMO it isn't really going somewhere, and don't take this too hard cause I like the mix and that's about my only comment; it flows nicely but without any real peaks...
just my 2 cents, graemlins/beerchug.gif
Still a good mix though, and the Noiseshaper track remains a staple... graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I'm sure you other belgians heard about that. if you havent sent a demo yet, you can still drop one of before the 1st of june at their HQ in Brussels.
now I'm just of to my wet patch again
everyone thanks for taking the time to have listened to it graemlins/respekt.gif

I've listened to about 40 mins so far (and did step away from my desk a couple of times).
One of the difficulties for me about commenting on another DJs mix is separating the dj in me from the dancer/music appreciator in me. Also, I don't like to sound like I've got in all figured out and that my mixes are all the sh$t. Some of them actually are sh$t. :D
I didn't hear any train wrecks or obvious mistakes, so I'm figuring you have the basic technical end of mixing taken care of.
Someone else mentioned it didn't have any peaks and I'd have to agree with that, though I don't think "peaks" is quite how I would put it. The type of beats seemed fairly similar from tune to tune, making the mix lack some texture and energy.
To put things in context...How long have you been spinning?
Also...props to you for posting your mix in the first place. If you've lurked on hear long enough, I'm sure you've seen how people get skewered on here. You posting a mix implies that you were willing to be skewered.
Frankly, I get tired of hearing how one should be on DHP...what should be said...how it should be said..what newbies should do first..blah blah blah. Tiresome and limiting are the first words that come to mind.

i would let somebody else eat it. don't do this in the middle of the winter though, might be tough to get it off. shouldn't do it in the summer either: way too hot to be covered in chocolate. i'd say autumn or spring is my favourite season for naked chocolate covered tandem bike rides (with supermodel on the back doing the licking, i'll do the steering....oh yeah: she has to do the footwork too, my toes would be too busy curling up and down) how freaky is that! :D

**** this.
Its not snobbery. It is a level of expectation. A thresh hold that must be past to catch people ears.
Fact is a lot of mixes on this site (except for a few), other sites and in general are boring as ****. Down right, straight up boring.
And just cause your shit, or hell, even my shit at some times, is ****ING BORING and isn’t worth the cost of the CD you put your boring ass bullshit on and some folks call you out on your stupid useless wack ass boring ****ing shit…………..you call it snobbery.
Well then **** for ****s sake I must be a snob then so here is a message to you. Unless you are certain that your shit has passed the thresh hold that my snobby taste requires then don’t post your shit cause my stuck up ass doesn’t want to hear it.
Funny thing is I KNOW when my shits not up to par it’s a damn shame the rest of you don’t.
11 songs? On a 60 to 80 minute mix? They better be damn good songs (looked at the play list and their not) or he better be working the **** out of em like only a few people know how or he better admit it was just some boring shit that he made for his friends to check out some new shit (not that different from a mix I sent to my friends yesterday, but then I did work the **** out of the first four records, then took it easy…see I know when I’m slacking on my shit). And if that is the caste don’t waste this boards time with the shit.
Other than that….don’t waste my time with some 11 song, play the song, sit there and tap your fingers on your coffee table shit until the end is near and then BORING blend the next one in. I’ve heard that shit done FIFTY MILLION USELESS ****ING TIMES and don’t want to hear it again.
Excite me! I get sick of eating broiled chicken EVERY damn night.

thx! I think I understand what you mean. Can you maybe point me towards djs or sets that are very good in this part so I could learn more ?
btw the last 2 tunes are actually the ones with the most energy in the set, so maybe after 40 minutes I waited to long to get things started in the energy department.

spinning house for about 2,5 years now. I used to play in 'the barroom' - cool lounge in Antwerp untill they seized to exist. Been playing round in various house parties also, mostly in Antwerp and Ghent.

exactly I just made the mistake that I was thinking that I have been on this board regurarly lately and I know 'the way it behaves' - but they didnt know me. Or something like that

btw I know that 11 trax is not a lot - was waiting for someone to point that out. I tend to have less songs on mix cds than I'd play live (say about allmost the half I suppose). next time I will think twice before I post my wack shit on here.
thank you for your kind, mature comments !

Intertesting, but don't you think that it should be the reverse? With a mix CD, you need to hold someone's attention or they will start scanning through your mix. To stop this, don't you think you need to bring your songs in quicker, or at least have more going on?
On the other hand, on the dancefloor, if you play the songs for a shorter period of time, don't you think you stand the risk of cutting off a song just when people are starting to get into the song? In other words, "your not rinsing out/running down" the riddim. Just a thought here.
Anyhoo, soap box time:
Dude, this place is for learning, not for putting your ideology down on people, e.g., here's my mix, come one, come all and listen. We are the students, and there are the teachers (trust me on that one ;) ). Its a life long education. The "tradition" here is to rag on those who post mixes first without introducing themselves. Again, there are a lot of originators, current producers, future producers, and all sorts of people connected to the music in some sort of way that troll this board.
Furthemore, a fair number of us do not post our own mixes. A good portion of the mixes are posted by people who hear a mix and think that the rest of us should hear it, and therefore submit it for uploading. Those are the mixes that get a lot of attention.
I've been playing for decades, but I've come to realize that what I thought was once great SUCKS. FREAKING SUCKS I TELL YOU. Everytime, I think I've seen it all and heard it all, I get blown away by some other person that has been doing it for just as long as I have, but from another angle.
Eventually, you come to realize that its simply "art," which imo is often times better appreciated from the perspective of an observer rather than the perspective of the creator.
Peace

I still don't get why people are giving elkhun shit. You'd think after three pages of him politely taking EVERYTHING people had to say it would be enough. Why not take into consideration that he has been on here reading and may not be as newbie as you think. graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

And true

hmm true yes because with demos and mix cds the whole point is often convincing promotors/other dj's/... of your skills. I guess there should be a balance (i must say my previous mix cds do have mroe trax, like 16 at average), which lacks in this mix.
On the other hand, on the dancefloor, if you play the songs for a shorter period of time, don't you think you stand the risk of cutting off a song just when people are starting to get into the song? In other words, "your not rinsing out/running down" the riddim. Just a thought here.
yes of course - you have to place it in the right context - no dj is gonna cut off a tune that builds up nicely and suddenly gets people shaking after 2 mins or so now is he ? but then again, it depends on the context (do you know what ur dancefloor wants/expects from you, etc..)
and once again, I of course didnt want to put my 'ideology' on to any of you...thought that was very clear by now...
I've been playing for decades, but I've come to realize that what I thought was once great SUCKS. FREAKING SUCKS I TELL YOU. Everytime, I think I've seen it all and heard it all, I get blown away by some other person that has been doing it for just as long as I have, but from another angle.

I've heard a lot of people spin so over the years I've gained a good feel for what works and what doesn't work. So I think, cause I've heard it all right? But ever so often, someone comes along and just blows al the "theories" out of the water. This person may have been playing for as long as me. This site is good for opening your ears to stuff that will have you gasping for air. When compared to what I do, I think I not that goood after all.
This cause me to look back and think to myself, what I've done SUCKS, in that I hear mistakes, missed cues, poor song selection, etc.

I have mixes on my site that are SCARY to me but I thought they were great at first (plus friends gassed me up and told me they were great). Then I'll hear other stuff (either online mixes or live) and realize there's always another way to approach things.
The last time I was humbled was when I heard Doug and Master Kev at Red a couple of months ago. Ouch!
Still...you have to start somewhere and I'm thinking that simply posting a mix shouldn't imply that the poster thinks it's the best thing since sliced bread, right?
I posted a mix on a DHP thread back in March, not because I thought it was so good, but because I was relieved to finally finish something after months of a serious dry spell and yeah...I was proud to have finished it...glitches and all.

It's good to hear that this will still be the same in say 5 years from now. Right now I hear other/better dj's everywhere of course and I hear only the bad stuff in my own mixes (I was thinking every dj only hears the bad parts in his own mixes). If one didnt hear the bad parts in his own mixes and didnt see where he could improve himself - what's the point of continuing with dj-ing at all right ? I mean, there wouldnt be an intellectual challenge anymore right?

Like 138 said way earlier on (at the beginning of page 2), there qill always be someone better and someone worse. Haven't ya'll every heard the grass is always greener on the other side.
As is the case with some many thread on this board, this has gotten off the originally intended subject. It seems there are only a few people that have posted that actually litstened to the WHOLE mix. Of thse that have, lets talk about it rather than raggin on this one or that one for the appropriate board etiquette.
