i went out to nashville this week. had to attend an unexpected funeral (r.i.p. skip litz - the nashville sound man - play a f***** train song) -- but on a better note, i hit up a few record shopps and was forced to spend the majority of my money on cheap disco funk records. i found a whole lot of classics and other obscure titles.
i guess i just didn't realize how available these cuts were - if i were to try and pick them up in chicago it would have cost me a pretty penny. -- is there any other cities that come highly recommended for buying older funk/disco/house records? -- most of what i wanted to buy in nashville was under $1
i also found a mint copy of "take my advice" by kym sims. i have been looking for this for a while now..... jere "jam" mcalister plays keys on my favorite mix (much props jere) -- i have tried to get this one in chicago many times to no avail..... and i found it for $0.50 -- ya, so anyway, if anyone has any city suggestions or record shopping suggestions, i am open and always up to take a trip. thanks yall

Anything good on independent labels from that area. I have been finding some stuff on small independent LA labels that are virtually unknown and pretty damn good!

i don't think that any of the labels are local to nashville, it seemed as if there were not much of a funk following to have many independants......
however i found lots of good 12" singles.... and as i am not positive on which labels are obscure, i will list a random sampling of the ones that i found good singles on:
Midsong International Records
Parachute Records
Blue Sky Records
Can't Stop Productions
RS International
Cotillion Records
Becket Records
Venture Records
Hob Records
Electrola
Gold Mind Records
Fantasy, Inc.
Megatone Records
Sunshine Sound Disco
Tec Records
Bang Records
AVI Records
Personal Records
i found many more off more common labels, (salsoul, prelude, ect) but overall i was surprised to find that many old records in mint condition for so cheap. so let me know about any of these labels -- or for that matter any cities with good crate digging potential
thanks much

in my neck of the woods (Tampa/St. Pete & it's surrounding towns), the used vinyl shops and thrifties usually have some nice finds on the cheap....this summer, i've bumped into a lot of 1970s disco and r&b although the eighties stuff comes in every now and then...bear in mind that there will be times here that stuff dries up but when it comes up, it comes up pretty good....not that many locally released funk/disco records here but we tend to get a decent amount of those late 80s freestyle and bass records out of Miami as well as TK and its sublabels (based out of Hialeah, FL)...
speaking of Nashville, every time i see a record from there i usually think of country...however, Nashville was home to Nashboro Records, which was often focused into gospel (but don't sleep because some of those 70s gospel albums are funk/disco tunes in disguise) as a matter of fact, that "HOB" label sounds vaguely familar...can you check to see if it's part of "Nashboro Records"...also, Nashboro Records had a secular label called "Abet" which released funk gems in the seventies such as Dynamic Corvettes -- "Funky Music Is The Thing (1974)"/an early b-boy/b-girl record and Oliver Sain's "Boogie"....
continuing with Tennessee, has anyone been to Memphis? if so, how is the vinyl digging over there? i would love to hear about other good digging cities/towns....
