That was a fantastic goal. Way to go. If they play the rest of this like they did against Spain, they will shut out Brazil. This could be it.

Amen Brother TAC. I criticized this team plenty before the tourney began but the USA is playing with HEART, GRIT, and DETERMINATION.

My son has me watching this game...

Spector is really good ...

Howard is great! I tell my son all the time (he's 6'8 and has a 7 foot wing span) that he should play soccer...he is always getting approached about it...his build reminds me of Howard...anyways...

Go USA!!

Hmmm.......he's the one that I'm not that confident of. He's performed some great saves, but IMO under pressure he can get ruffled, and he loses ball to the front of goal a bit too easily.

I was flipping through my cable channels and did a double-take at the 1-0 score - just then (and I truly mean 'just then'), I saw the the breakout with the wonderful passes that ended up in the Landon Donovan goal - it was pretty impressive. Needless to say, i've stopped flipping channels and will watch this game to it's conclusion (while listening to 'Rhythm & Sound').

Now that Brazil has put one up on the board, this will be pretty hard to hold this slim one goal lead.

Koffy Brown

What position is it that is helping the goalie? Can any position go stand in the goal and help out the goalie?

OMG!! What a fukking save....

Apparently not, though I think all sports should - it is more important to get the calls correctly than for them to be done in real-time by the on-field officials.

It's one of the many anachronisms of football. Football is the only sport that steadfastly allows speculation instead of proof. It's also encourages and awards active cheating.

I'm thinking more about the official rules and regulations. For instance that they permit stuff like grabbing players in the goal area, the claiming of the throwin, yellow cards without immediate sanctions (time and team penalties), time wasting, as well as all the acting that goes on to create a foul. I play a a grass pitch collision sport, I know exactly how to injure a player on pitch, and I laugh every time one of the football blokes goes to ground over nothing at all. I keep challenging the football guys at my club to just ten minutes of rugger with an old man - they decline every time.

(*)total bullshit, seeing as how everyone, including the players themselves, clearly know who should get the throw-in.

pedigree goes a long long way in that sport. USA had a great tournie. Caused problems for all the big boys. They played well and This will be good for their confidence leading up to the WC. But, i'd be surprised if they do nearly as well in the wc.

with regards to instant replays: I'm against them EXCEPT for when a goal is involved. Should have been 4-2 today in other words.

06-29-2009, 10:26 AM
the US has problems playing with their backs against the wall. as soon as Brazil scored the first goal the US fell back to emergency defense, mistake, because it gave Brazil all the space they need to attack.
the main weakness in the US game is a lack of depth on the bench. It was curtains for the US once they started subbing. Brazil has the ability to throw world class players at any team all day long.

great game and even though we didn't play the 'beautiful game' i think the us is discovering that it can win with the ugly game: come out agressive, get lucky with early opportunities that capitalize on our raw athleticism, frustrate the other team with physical defense, then grab the nutz and pray!

i played both footballs and you are right most of the time, but i gotta tell you taking a shot in the shin is about as painful as it gets so somtimes they ain't acting...

thank you. Never mind the ankle too. And yeah, the pain doesn't last long. But do they embellish? Certainly - and that's what's embarrassing. Because often when it's a real serious injury they go down and just motion to the bench to be subbed right away. No rolling around like they've been shot in the face.

Why does the 'average' American sports fan feel the need to denigrate a sport which they a) do not understand, and b) their country does not dominate at?

Yeah, but only one in three contacts the shin or ankle properly. Most of the free kicks are the result of good acting.

When I'm running full tilt, and somebody stationary grabs my shirt, the shirt tears. I don't go to ground, roll over thrice, and gesticulate in exasperation at the ref, demanding a yellow card. This is something that is rewarded regularly by the football regulations. It is sanctioned cheating in my book.

In my sport you get sent off for trying that sort of stuff. You're not even allowed to address the ref. And even the captain has to ask permission to speak.

In Rugby we have a totally different code of honour. I have benched players for playing dirty. And afterwards they got a proper talking to, including ejection from the active roster.

i happen to like it but it just will never catch on here. not enough tradition like baseball and football (nfl). USA could of won this title and 2 world cups in a row and still wont catch on.

kinda the way the tour the france only made the news here when Armstrong was wining titles then he left and no interest
