REPETITIVE BEATS

6 Music, the BBC Digital Channel, is broadcasting a documentary called 'Repetitive Beats - A Social History Of Electronic Dance Music' this week. The first part is tonight (Monday 1st December) at 21.00 - 21.30 UK time, followed by three further parts at the same time on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The series is presented by Andrew Purcell.

You can check it out live via the internet at
www.bbc.co.uk/6music (http://www.bbc.co.uk/6music)

Tonights programme includes Kraftwerk, Frankie Knuckles, Kevin Saunderson, Marshall Jefferson, Danny Rampling, Norman Jay, A Guy Called Gerald and the Chemical Brothers. I was also interviewed, suffering from a severe case of laringytis following a full-on weekends clubbing in London, including the Electro Empire night, Low Life and David Mancuso's London Loft, so, no doubt, I'm going to sound like I'm about 90 years old!.

Greg,

what does this cover?? - 'A social history' , as in personal clubbing experiences of you and Rampling, Frankie, and Gerald since the start of the 80's and how various clubs have adapted?? Explain a bit more for me as to what is being discussed if you please.

'Repetitive Beats' is a term used by the UK government when they legislated against Raves, so I presume it will be about the development of the scene up to this point.

Thanks for the heads-up Greg smile.gif

Your bit was probably the most interesting to be honest as the most of what else was said has been covered many, many times before, though I imagine it may have been new for listeners to 6music.

Who was that journalist at Blues and Soul btw?

Looking forward to Part 2!

Looking forward to Part 2! Hi jc: The journalist was Frank Elson, the Northern club correspondent for B&S back then. To say that Frank was anti-Electro would be an understatement! He felt that it was going to be the ruination of black music. Despite being totally at odds with regards to 'scene politics', we actually got on fairly well.
