Here's what I envision.

A bunch of smelly people, living in caves, bedding down with dogs and all sorts of animals. The Ice people!

Come on you lot, what does it mean to YOU.

Discuss...

From my vacation in Paris, I got a feeling that Europe has become more nonwhite than we are led to believe.

Oh, yeah, TAC,

The "...creation of the British Empire" quote, is that due to your Carribean heritage (didn't you say you were Carribean)?

If so, then the late Peter Tosh would disagree ("You're An African"). ;)

Which Europe? The rich or the poor one?

For the rest, Europe to me means taking the time to do things, not stressing for everything and enjoying life. The consequence of this is that you will see most stores closed on sunday, average service in restaurants and bars, etc.

Culture, something North America does not possess. Actually, North America exports its non-culture, which is fascinating. The most interesting cultural heritage of North America is being shoved down, silenced and ignored (like our music ;) ).

Sex, is it me or do we get more of that in Europe? graemlins/rofl.gif

Decent food.

Cheap wine.

Expensive flats.

Neo-nazis.

Beautiful cities.

Small distances between countries (easier to travel).

BIKES!

Wars.

Less obese people.

Less Ontarians.

Kinky people :D

depends on the country.

for lyot - Belgium - Brel, Waffles, and TOLERANCE. A tolerant people/society. Neuhaus chocolates. Mayo with your Chips/fries/frites

france - decedant culture, haute couture, gothic churches, beautiful language, women who have some of the most sex in the world.

europe as a whole - socialism.

I don't think I could name any country that is purely anything. Even the US's capitalism isn't entirely capitalistic. Our markets aren't completely free.

But Europe , compared to America, is to the left. I'm thinking about things like Public Healthcare.

Countries specifically ?

Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, France

Where is the redistribution of wealth more than these places?

(am I off-base here?)

Sweden has a Social Democrat government. Denmark has a right-wing government. The Netherlands have a center-right government. France has a centre-right government and a conservative president.
The whole EU is a center-right project, so I don't think you could say that Europe is very socialist.

Yes, the welfare system still prevails in many countries, but it's on a decline almost everywhere.

What is quite general in most European countries, in which you are right, is a mixed economy. State-owned industries compete on similar terms with private enterprises, but it's still capitalist as far the meaning of the word goes.
Many countries do have free or very cheap health care though.

Cheers!

(am I off-base here?) You mean to say, that there's is no state funded healthcare or education in the US?

Now that's barbaric to say the least..

What happens when you're poor and you have an accident, what if you're poor and want to go to University?

You mean to say there might be a kid running around a poor neighborhood of the US who has the potential in her imagination to come up with a cure for AIDS, but because she'll not get a state schooling (University included) she runs the risk of working in a nail salon? :( :( :(

We should have had a revolution years ago, but it seems that our ironic sense of humor comes from a dis/ability to accept the status quo..

Yes we have the most cunningly evolved sense of humor in the world, but we pay for it in our own way by having a right-wing psudo-socialist prime minister and some parasitic Germanic bitch sitting in her 200 bedroom house in SW1..

I get the feeling we'd always make do, make fun of the situation and just get on with it...

We should have had our revolution when the poll-tax was cutting the country in two, that was our perfect moment, that was, as Churchill put it, our finest hour..

Now it's just like Orwell's '1984', with Bush and Blair creating (albeit not false) wars to keep the home-front from looking internally and seeing what a mess we're in..

I will be buying all the drinks when Thatcher dies, that's my own personal revolution, I am going to dance all night high on the fact that the WITCH is DEAD..

I always thought that, but having lived in Europe I found that other nation's perception of us was very different. Historically Britain has always been seen by Europe as a hot-bed of revolution. `The Enlightenment' was actually cited by many European philosophers and thinkers as having been inspired by events in Britain, and the British Enlightenment. Some time after that this perception of Britain can still be seen in the works of Marx: he thought Britain was the ideal place for his progression of dialectic materialism to acheive communism.

I do repeat - compared to America , Europe is socialist. But it's all comparitive. We are not pure capitalism (although too pure for my tastes) and Europe isn't pure socialism. But I think that how I see Europe as being comparitively socialistic is how many Americans see it, as well.

Mah'chew - shall I break down the reality of being poor in this country, never mind the theory?
MILLIONS of Americans, including myself, my family right now for over 1 year, without health care. yes, we've applied...
