It's in the syncopation. That syncopation is the key to funk.
Agree? Disagree?

cite specific example please....
there are many attributes to funk to point out. fat bassline, more than just one "groove", a sense of freedom in the swing, everybody coming together on the 1...
(George Clinton saying you when you make love, you use more than just one kind of stroke. And that's what they did with disco after it hit big. they reduced it to one kind of stroke.)

syncopation is true, but with funk you always have one specific point in the bar that gets accentuated.. like Romanthony says just before the break hits in bring u up : groove one the one ... you syncopate the hell out of a bar around one point that always gets a accentuated ..
BOOM pwat prrrlbabbe pp bebabbe BOOM tak tik tetak tik tetok tik BOOM (silence) hit uhit BOOM
sometimes you skip an accent but the next time you accentuate it will be on the exact same spot in the bar ( provided you don't shift rhythm somewhere)
with house you get 4 accentuated hits per bar, anyway, the fact you always return to the one accent opens up the rest of the bar for syncopation, where for example in a bossa rhythm there are 2 specific points that need to be accentuated, so less room for syncopation
something like that, i dunno

It's obvious the funk is in the bass drum beat in this song. What if the beat was:
Thump,, thump, thump, thump thump
instead of what it is:
Thump,, thump thump<bumpbumpbumpbumpbump>, thump, thump<bumpbumpbumpbumpbump>;
Thump,, thump thump<bumpbumpbumpbumpbump>, thump, thump<bumpbumpbumpbumpbump>
Wouldn't be nearly as funky, would it? Even with the double up behind the eigth rest (represented by the two commas).
