Hello everyone,

I need some advice or tips to record a live jazz performance....guerilla style.

I do not have access to the sound board/pa system so recording right out of the mixer is not an option.
Does anyone have any tips as to what portable recording equipment that I can use to record the show.
The venue is a very large building...marble/stone floor and walls...I will either position myself next to the speaker stacks or conveniently place the recording gear within the speaker to capture the audio.

Is this a "no recordings allowed" type thing?

If so, you're probably going to get a crappy recording no matter what you do, so just bring a cassette recorder with a built in mic in your coat.

I haven't tried these, but some folks clip them onto either side of their eyeglasses and record to a DAT in their pocket when they have to go clandestine: http://www.sonicstudios.com/dsm.htm

If it's OK to record, go hippie taper stylee with a DAT and Audio Technica AT822 stereo mic and a stand if possible. Get in the middle close to the front and point it straight ahead. If you ever do jazz in a small venue, this is better than plugging into the board, as the naturally louder instruments (or those with their own amps) will be low or nonexistent in the mix. Plus, you get the sound of the room.

Trying to get the sound "out of the speaker" somehow will give poor results at best.
