i'd be peeking out the window till my moms and pops left. once gone, i'd wait 10 minutes all the while looking out the window, hook the whole thing up (the speakers i managed to convince my dad were a good idea and stayed on permanently).

i'd record the whole thing live trying to "pause mix" and thought i was the hottest thing for having the cleanest cuts between tracks.

i was, and very much still am, INSANE.

aahhh music.

great post D. I got in trouble once for mentioning this during an interview, but it's the truth...

I remember buying a shitty panosonic stereo radio with turntable on top. It had buttons to push: CD (just a button no real cd player), Tape, Phono, and Tuner. Since I didn't have the money to buy turntables, I would still buy records and try my hand at mixing. I remember discovering that if you pushed down the "phono" and "tuner" buttons at the same time, they'd get stuck and I would be able to hear the record playing and stereo at the same time. So I used to practice mixing but hearing a song on the radio and finding a record that was close to the same tempo. I used to use my finder to push the record along to speed it up and hold down the the metal part in the middle to slow it down.

When I got a little more "advanced", I used to buy the tape and vinyl versions of popular music at the time, so I could mix between record and tape like I was the shit (I never was and still ain't). smile.gif

I think I might have one, if it hasn't been mentioned already...

You know you're old school when you used to see one of the first sneaker commercials (at least to my memory) for British Knights.

You know you're old school when grocery stores used to stock up on on penny and nickle candies and chocolates, like they were the highest grossing items in the entire store.

Reese's cup (the tiny ones)
Charlston Chews
Peanut Chews (is that the same thing?)
5 cent swedish fish (one in a shrink wrap)
now or laters (watermelons were the shit)
Pop Rocks
what was the name of the packet of sugar, in essence, with a stick you could dip in and scoop up the sugar?

what was the name of the red spicy mini candies that when you sucked on them, the center would be white? I used to finish the pack of them and then blow on the box cause it sounded like a harmonica.

Remember quarter juicies and quarter chips? With 50 cents, I had lunch all sorted out.

Remember when stamps went up to 23 cents and it was a public outcry?

Remember when supermarkets carried vinyl? I used to get mine at Pathmark.

Remember Crazy Eddies? His prices were INSANE!

Remember when "Nobody Beats the Biz" came out and it was a direct copy of The Wiz commercial, "nobody beats the wiz....nobody beats the wiz"...Biz Markie was my hero for doing that.

Speaking of Biz Markie, did anyone ever figure how one would actually contract the Vapors? I still don't know to this day. All I know is that I never wanted it. If I did, I'd end up being a janitor on a big boat, with celebrity rappers all around me with a lot of money and women. Remember that video? HAHAHAHA!

hell yeah!I used to do that with all my finished candy boxes.(Mr.Melon,Boston Baked Beans,Lemonheads,Grapeheads,Red Hots,etc..) graemlins/respekt.gif

I came in with the nonstop segway blends and got the party rockin'. I was shy and when he would stop the music the girls would go back to the other side of the gym and we would have to ask them to dance again when the next record would start. I was at a party a couple of weeks ago. This female and I are dancing our asses off. She had to be about 23/24yrs. So we started doing some old dances. So i started "Jackin'" and she was like what is that a new dance... I was like you if you don't know you are probably too young for me... Jack...Jack...Jack...Jack your body....

speaking of WHT, remember when it was video channel "U68" back in 85/86? that was a boon for folks that did not have cable...

You know your oldschool when...... the dj plays an old old OLD cut that you used to love and you start dancing like crazy on the dance floor. Only to realize after the song was over, that only you and one other person had ever heard that song before. The other 900+ people in the club were staring at you (Fredrick Douglas) and your date (Harriett Tubman) cuttin a rug. graemlins/conf44.gif

going back to your setup, did you buy this stereo recently or did you inherit it from a family member? i've seen quite a few of those sixties tv/stereo/furniture modules and come across them once in a while at the thrifties, but i never seen one with dual turntables from the factory...bear in mind that rca in its immediate postwar years was championing the 45 rpm disc while Columbia was pushing for the lp....also, didn't RCA market its hi-fis with the "orthopodic(???) sound" tag in those years (early-mid 60s)?

Say Jcapeverde, I used to catch Al Owens out in front of the Exxon building on 48thst and Ave of the Americas in Manhattan back in the early 80's, Very funny cat, I always felt he should have came off very hard doing standup comedy back then, You could not walk past Al Owens on the street while he was doing his routines without homes cracking on you(sometimes hard), Charlie Barnett(Rip), Was way ahead of his time to me, Money(Charlie Barnett)used to Do much work in Washington Square Park in the late 70's/early 80's, Also, Charlie Barnett was well known in the mid 80's for doing much work on Miami Vice as Noogie(Nogard Neverly Lamont), Charlie Barnett was one of the most talents cats that i've ever seen do comedy(Along with Robin Harris/Rip), On the low, The reason Eddie Murphy was put down for the Saturday nite live show in 1980 was Charlie Barnett(Who was the first choice to get the spot)could not read his lines
doing an audition, Who knows how far Charlie Barnett could have gone in show business if only he could read. You know your old school if you can remember sneaking a box(Radio)into a spot during a throwdown in the 70's(Hotel Diplomat,Constellation,Small's Paradise,T-Connection), You know your old school when you can still remember shootouts at spots(Clubs) and Park throwdowns(And who was doing the shooting and for what reason), You know your old school when you can remember sporting Pony's and Top Ten Adidias's sneakers back in the 70's/early 80's, Or when you rememeber asking cats who have next(To play basketball)can i get some run, And the cat says , I don't know, I'll have to wait until the game is over(which means, **** outta here), Or remembering how cats used to go to Delancy st(D St)back in the 70's to get sheepskin coats and matching hats(LOL).
