View Full Version : SCTV: Celebrity Blow-up

There was a skit on SCTV called "Celebrity Blow-up" They'd invite a celebrity on the show like Brooke Sheilds. They'd interview her, she'd maybe sing a song, then they'd say, "Well, it's been great having you. Can y'blow up for us, now?" And she say, smiling, "OK" then BOOM!! She'd explode; bits of her hair and clothes would go in all directions and the two hosts(John Candy and Dave Thomas), dressed in overalls and looking like farmers would say, "She blowed up real good. Reeeaaal gooood"
Great show.

They once had Martin Short doing Jerry Lewis in an Ingmar Bergman movie. That shit was so funny I still think about it to this day, and that was like 1982.

He would cook then add the last ingredient, ganja, then smoke the dish. He actually smoked a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a fish on TV.

the middle series of SCTV (often called SCTV 90, because of their length) that orginally appeared on NBC (after SNL) will finally be released on DVD.
According to Dave Thomas, there was considerable delays in doing this over the years because of the high cost of the music rights used in the series (they never cleared any of the music in most of the shows, especially the early pre NBC shows).
But finally some blanket agreements have been worked out.
so in jan look for the DVD sets to begin to appear.
Personally, i think the early SCTV's (which dont get shown in the states) with Harold Ramis as the head writer are 10 times funnier than the longer and more theme oriented episodes that ran on NBC and later cable in the states.
You havent lived until youve seen "plain clothes mountie"or Moe Green's early "dialing for dollars"..also sunrise semester with joe flaretey doing an impersonation of a slimy greek guy giving greek lessons in how to say "heey, babbee, whats a happen-en", thats supposed to be a lesson in classic greek.

yeah those ones are the bomb in my book
i wish the DVDs would have started with those, but understand why they started with the NBC ones.
theyre more consistent and theres a bit more money in the production values, so first time viewers wont be put off by the cheapness of the early ones..which i like cause it gives the air of a really low budget small station
cooking with la rue for poor people.
where he makes a meal with cat food, ketchup and grass ,finally loosing his temper and yelling at the camera that "you poor pll should get up and get a job!"
or the early version of half wits..oh man, cant wait to see that shit again

The rasta also had an aerobics show with a jumprope made out of joints tied together. Also when he was making that PB&J he had trouble finding the ingredients--every cabinet he opened was stuffed with weed!
Michael Richards did another skit where he was playing a kid playing Army in the back yard. His neighbor comes over and he proceeds to bury the neighbor up to his neck and then attack his head with the Army guys--stupid but funny as hell!
