THE BROOKLYN DEEP HOUSE SCENE

You'd better believe there is one. Tyrone Francis, Kayo, Donna Edward's and Lil Ray lead the charge at 667 and it get's no better musically with E-MAN at Bang The Party at Duplexx. Frank's Lounge is also a favorite and occasionally Ray Hands has things going over there too.

Deep house in New York has it's problems though. People are not supportive of the scene's DJ's and will haggle you for a $5 guest list. The crowds are more diverse than ever but unlike funky house or progressive, or any other music for that matter, it never draws younger clubbers. The deep house scene is split in New York. Half the people love the sound of Body & Soul, while the other love the Timmy Regisford Shelter sound. You can throw Louie Vega in there too but he hasn't had a stable residency in the city since Underground Network.

Deep house crowds are very anthemic. Most of the DJ's that spin the music never go out of bounds of what is being programmed at the Shelter. I love the fact that 667's Tyrone Francis breaks new music months before you hear it anywhere else, but that too has it's flaws. Would people really support it if it wasn't a free party? The music is too damn good not to pay a cover [entry] for but on a Wednesday night it might be a risk, which it shouldn't be. It's the best Wednesday night party in the city.

When I played at Bang The Party at Duplexx on a Friday many of my old school friends wish that I played the style of music they grew up listening to. But because it wasn't a free party many didn't show up. I was upset about that and it reminded me why I stayed away from that scene for so long. I felt there was no camaraderie there. No respect. When people lose parties in the deep house scene in New York they whine about nothing going on but when something does happen they don't support it. It's horrible.

LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL...

In my opinion Danny Krivit has the best deep house party in the city. He's old school but he's not arrogant and disrespectful like some other DJ's I won't mention. The scene also has some new hero's I'm a big fan of QUENTIN HARRIS, DARYL JAMES, DJ SPINNA, and ONSUNLADE quickly come to mind. You also have Jihad and Naeem Johnson in New Jersey that never let a party down over there but the scene is also missing some heroes as well. RON TRENT and JOE CLAUSELL where are you??? Established clubs won't touch deep house clubs. Too many people want to get in free and those clubbers don't drink.

CHANGE PLEASE!

If the deep house scene in New York wants to stay alive things have to change. I don't see change, I just see the same clubbers with the same mentality from 10 years ago. I think I'll stay away from that scene until I see a change. I'll always love the music. Regionally and on an international level it's way more
acceptable and crowds really do love diverse musical styles. Deep house worldwide is making a big impact, but New York is becoming a sleeping giant that needs to wake up.

FACTS

For all of you people around the world that are reading this there is a difference between deep house, soulful house, funky house and sexy house, but it's all house music. Here are the things I noticed:

(1) DEEP HOUSE DJ'S: Timmy Regisford (NYC), Mark Grant (Chicago) Marcus Wyatt (L.A.)

Major productions that get love: Quentin Harris, Blaze, Masters At Work

The Difference: Certain New York deep house only works in New York. Deep can be vibey too without heavy musical and vocal influences. Deep is also mixed many times with classics.

(2) Soulful House DJ'S(2) : Bobby and Steve (UK) Jamie Lewis (Switzerland), Knee Deep (Germany)

Major Productions That get Love: Grant Nelson, Soulfuric, Basement Boys.

The difference: You can't play UK soulful house in most New York deep house clubs and vice versa. In New York it wouldn't be organic enough. You can get away with playing soulful house in New York clubs like GBH, CIELO and Saffire
Lounge. Deep house outfits like Onsunlade and Joe Clausell rarely get play in the UK and Europe's club scene but Masters At Work, Spinna and Blaze do cross over.

(3) SEXY HOUSE DJ'S: MARK FARINA( San Francisco), BEN WATT (UK), NEIL ALINE (NYC)

Productions that get love: Naked, OM, Hed Kandi

The Difference:It's the most popular form of dance music amongst women in the USA. Sexy house is more vibey and not as anthemic. A night of sexy house will not go down well at the Shelter in New York, but it will do big things for the Body & Soul type crowd.

Sexy house is accepted among established clubs because unlike the deep and soulful house scene, the sexy house crowd is a drinking crowd. Some sexy house clubs are she-she- la-la (ie, meaning very upscale).

(4) Funky House: Alan Thompson (UK), Bob Sinclair (France), George Morel (Miami)

Productions that get love: Defected, Credence, Yellow and some Subliminal

The difference: The most popular form of dance music sold today. Many of the DJ's (your's included) can easily crossover from funky-soulful or funky-sexy or funky-hard. Funky house DJ's are more diverse and flexible but funky house DJ's tend to fall in the category of a party DJ. Musically over the years it gets more attention than the other music genres (Ie: Jr. Jack "E- Samba", Lee Cabrera "Shake It" and Laurent Wolf "Calinda"). Funky house crowds don't tend to like deep house as they like energy with their music.

Physical Heat Music No where man.Things have changed and in the same breath they haven't.There will never be shit like it was back in the days. There are vents that are underground that are playing all types of shit.Sometimes you have to venture out of your comfort zone and try some different shit to find what you are searching for.It ain't gonna bite you on the ass.

When you get the chance, check out the chicago parties section and find something to check out when you get a chance.

These brothers and sistas on that list ARE making it happen.I say this because of thier contributions at 667+ Franks Loundge, ect get mad props from me.The music survives if we open our hearts to it.Lil Ray,Donna,Kayo and eveyone else continue week in and week out to provide this musical excellence, and without them then we do have a problem.Keep the faith.."If you play it,they will dance". Many Blessings. smile.gif

Not to be petty or anything but it's interesting that Darryl James is considered to be a "new hero" when in fact he's been active in the music business (writing, post-production, playing records, etc.) for over ten years (i.e. "Where do we go", "You make me happy" both early ninties jams.) or is this the same Darryl James? Maybe the author means new in that he's finally getting the love he should have some time ago but, he's not new to those of us who have been following the music's "progression" for the last ten, twenty or more years.

Daryl is a new hero to him. You can seriously compare what DJ did in 92 to what he is putting out now. Thus that is his new hero.

Maybe he just wants to point out that Darryl gets a lot of attention lately. So much in fact as he haven't had since his "Freeze" days.

Peace.

from a NYC perspective, there are alot of points that make sense.

it wouldbe major-ly kool if NYC got back into the "house" spirit and looked past all the divisions.

i guess its up to NYC thats all..

the rest of the world doesnt seem to have any issues with "our music"

I personally would love it if Osunlade came over to play more in the UK , he's totally awesome when he plays. And I know a LOT of people who would come out an support him if more people put him on, his recent gig at Neighbourhood(UK) was packed.

And there's quite a bit of excitement being generated with Joe Clausell coming over in Feburary, I think people in general are getting tired of the MAW experience, you only have to read the Southport board to see that......

Ive been to many places this past month, even had interveiws at a few clubs to manage.
So the Chicago Partys section, yes..I read them almost every week.
There's always plcaes to go, but 9 out of 10 you will hear the same thing, even almost see the same people at another location.
My Comfort zone has always been the World, it's just that sometimes you realy get Bored with the same-old-every-day-another location events...
Wouldnt you agree that its time for a Change sooner or later?
Why not Sooner?
