What about these bootleg movies being hawked everywhere? You have people selling them out of vans in front of grocery stores, in the laundromat, at the dollar stores, in the workplace, etc. They do it in front of the police. Is there a big difference between this and the music issue? I don't really see anyone actively stopping these sales. And for those who choose to reply, before you do, think about whether or not you've ever rented a video and dubbed it!
(Danny-no, I haven't seen any bootlegs of your movie being sold. I will let you know if I do!)
I know alot of people download movies from Kazaaa or sites like that.
But in terms of the bootleg copies being sold, and also in terms of the dubbing in VHS format, I don't think it really affects the status quo or whatever.
Take an underground art flick for example, or even a Criterion Collection art flick, you could prolly find a dubbed or bootleg copy, but it totally defeats the point of the collection in the first place because the quality is crap.
Nowadays film and media are being judged more and more by picture/sound quality and most of the movies being bootlegged are like big time blockbuster movies that gross millions, and needless to say the buyer usually ends up with a crappy copy anyways, so there is not much incentive to keep on buying.
But hey, what do I know, I always buy the new DVD or a barely used one on EBAY.

(Danny-no, I haven't seen any bootlegs of your movie being sold. I will let you know if I do!) The bootleg issue is a big problem in movies. Unlike the music arguement that pirates wouldn't purchase the music they download, movies extend to several other markets after home video - each of which effects the value of the film property.
Theatrical numbers effect the value of home video rights. Home video numbers effect the value of pay-per-view rights. Both effect pay cable (HBO, Showtime, etc.) rights and all effect free television and syndication rights.
Unlike music/recording companies, film producers PAY, PAY, PAY...union/guild actors, writers, directors and producers all receive residuals from all market activity except home video (still a gray area after all these years). So do everyone who contributes music via soundtrack artists or score composers. The pot is indeed shared - in a big way, but if a film is "bootlegged", there is less revenue to help a film property continue to receive money.
If you're a member of the Screen Actor's Guild, how much money you make on residuals effects health insurance benefits, pension benefits, onanonanon...
Just the other day I got a residual check for $14.00 for a bad film I had fifteen lines in...ten years ago...
Think about it - a DVD with great picture and sound quality and all the extras one could ever want costs LESS than a CD with one decent song on it and the rest is crap. The motion picture industry keeps pace with consumers far better than the music and software industries. Its technology is far more progressive and its business practices toward content producers is far more equitable.
Bootlegging hurts a lot of people in the movie business. I know record labels are charlatans, but film producers and studios, when legit, mean quite a bit of money and stability for those involved.
Off my soap-box now.

My 2 cent:
1.) I don't have a TV that is big as the movie Screen so, if a movie appeals to me, I go to the movies to see it.
2.) The bootleg movies that I have seen are not to my viewing standard & as of sound they are not recorded in 5.1.
3.) I have better things to do with $10.00 than spend it on a movie that is substandard as of sight & sound.
If I can download it etc just like they do, why would I spend my money with them?????

I've seen movies that were starting on a Friday being played at the barbershop on Saturday. How are they getting these movies so quickly?

Love is the Message......MFSB Lp --- PRICELESS!!
i.e.
Think of just one recording in your collection. Maybe you spent $10.00 for it. You played it a 100 times or more over the years. Each time it brings you joy and love.
I think that more than answer's the question should I or should I not support the above.
You eat one meal and it's gone in a matter of hours at $10.00 a clip.......
