I need an easy drive route to get to the city from newark.

Just hop on the Pulaski Skyway... aka Route 1&9 North... it runs right into the Holland tunnel.

So basically take Route 21 over to the Skyway northbound...

So basically take Route 21 over to the Skyway northbound... Also, if your headed to midtown you can do Rte. 280 east to the NJ turnpike north (eastern spur)to exit 16E to 295 east to the Lincoln Tunnel.
