View Full Version : have you INSURED your records??

I've always wondered what I would do if something happened to my music, God forbid.
It would be a double-whammy: losing your prized possessions, as well as all the money you put into them.
However in order to atleast salvage the $ part, have you people thought of insuring your music??
I'm curious again... graemlins/conf44.gif
My records and equipment are insured. Very tedious but necessary process......JMJ

JMJ,
How do you go about insuring slabs of vinyl...
The equipment part is comprehensible, ...........but vinyl ????

The equipment part is comprehensible, ...........but vinyl ???? It's insured as part of my homeowner's policy. Everything has to be itemized. Contact your insurance agent. It's really no different than insuring collectibles.....JMJ

JMJ, did you make lists of all the records you own before insuring them?

do you keep your "newer" records separate from the older purchases. I'm assuming that this would make it much easier to "update"???!!!!!

Ok, I think I will start to do this, but how would you figure out an approximate value? Is that on the whole collection? or on individual pieces?

Another question, how in heavens name do you guesstimate how much each piece would be? If you think about it you could name any price, or would it be how much you paid for it or is it what it would sell in todays market? Sorry for all the questions, had a fire scare here so, I would like to really do this.

I talked with my agent about my lil collection and we added extra value to my renter's policy but its the writing down all this stuff that is killing me, I just can't get motivated :(

Hey JMJ,
I plan on creating an inventory of what I have. I plan on doing this in the coming weeks. What should I include:
I'm assuming obviously artist, title, record cie, cat#, format.
I guess I should also include VALUE as well, no....
I figure I'll do 20 records a day for the next 3 years or so...
Patience is a virtue..... graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

But don't you worry about all of this, you have more important things to do like hug and kiss that sweet baby of yours. ;) Take your time.

I had to do a quick check on EBAY and GEMM to come up with an approximate worth. There are books available that list values, but some of the really obscure stuff isn't listed. What you paid originally is irrelevent unless it's something fairly common. Keep in mind that the more you claim, the more you pay, but it's worth it if you've got some valuable stuff. I list most of the new stuff at face value......JMJ ;)

I know the whole fire thing inspired me for a hot minute when an idiot fell asleep cooking and woke up to a very pregnant woman cussing woman damn near kicking in his door. But then I was too pregnant to use the motivation. Since I have put a freeze on record shopping I would be good if I could just get a few of the 8 crates I have now done. Once life slows down a bit I know I am going to have to get on the ball.

If you have this program give it a try since it can create proper lists espeacially if you plan to organize your collection alphabetically. I'm going to give it a try, hopefully it will help me to properly organize my collection too. :D

For example 1-2000, (next sheet) 2001-4000, or will that still create performance issues?

Reasons to create a database in MSAccess are data integrity and data validation. The worst nightmares I have seen in Excel have been caused by the Sort function - e.g. mistakenly sorting on title, but not any of the other columns. Someone sorted on record label, but not artist. Excel is a Rubik’s cube of data and there is no way to correct the spreadsheet once you make a serious error and saved it.

I will though, keep in mind about the errors. This is going to be long and tedious. :(

Yep,
My suggestion would be to go ahead and start it in Excel, and down the line if/when you run into mem issues, bring it over to Access.
Hope that helps.
